It’s really no wonder so many people are fat. The fast-food purveyor Chick-fil-a chick-fil-a-mint-milkshake.jpgannounced the promotion of a new high-everything milkshake available starting on St. Patrick’s day.
The carb and caloric content of this baby is astounding.

Chick-fil-a’s Cookies and Cream Milkshake has 790 calories, 300 calories from fat, 33g total fat, 18g saturated fat, .5g trans fat 95mg cholesterol, 660mg sodium, 111g carbohydrates, 1g fiber, and 100g sugars.

And it costs a whopping $2.79!
The last time I went to my natural foods grocery store grass-fed beef steak was selling for $16 per pound. According to the USDA food database, a 16 ounce t-bone steak with 1/4″ fat contains 599 kcal. If you do the math you discover that with the steak you get about 37 kcal per dollar spent whereas with the Mint Cookies and Cream milkshake you get 283 kcal for your dollar.
If you’re looking for cheap calories, the milkshake is the way to go. If you’re looking for nutritional bang for your buck and better health…well, you make the call.

“The Mint Cookies and Cream Milkshake is just plain fun,” said Woody Faulk, Chick-fil-A’s vice president of brand development. “Following last year’s highly successful rollout of Hand-Spun Milkshakes, we wanted to let our customers know that we appreciate their enthusiastic support of the shakes – and that we have a few surprises in store for them!”

I wonder if those surprises include type II diabetes, obesity and heart disease. All those are “just plain fun” too.
Jesus wept.

  1. Oh lordy, that’s just the sort of thing hubby would belly right up to. Good thing there aren’t any Chick-fil-a’s near us.
Don’t worry, there are plenty of other places with stuff just as atrocious. Probably one near you.

  2. The more I read about stuff like this, the more I’m convinced that, as fewer people are using recreational drugs or smoking, sugar and white flour have become the new drugs of choice.
Hmmm. Maybe all white powders are addictive.

  3. I’d also be interested to know what the profit for Chick fil a on the milk shake is compared to the profit for the farmers on the steak! I don’t know the answer, but I’d be willing to bet it’s far higher for the milkshake.
    Hi Pam–
I’m sure you’re right.  It’s probably dirt cheap to make the milkshake–not so to raise the cow.

  4. Uhm, who is going to Chik-Fil-A with the intention of eating healthy?
I would suggest only people with a diminished capacity for reason.
I wouldn’t eat it, but I would defend the right of anyone who wants to to have it. That’s America.
    I agree across the board.

  5. One day, they’ll find a way to fry that milkshake! And with soy oil or canola oil of course!
True.  And then sprinkle it with powdered sugar.

  6. This is all true; but that junk is freaking delicious.
I’m sure it is; but good tasting doesn’t mean good for you.

  7. Well, I have worked for Chick-fil-A for over six years, and since I began at a whopping 230 pounds (fat kid) and now weigh under 150 (yes, working at chick-fil-a) I want to put up a defense that we have very good choices on our menu as well….the reason America is obese is because of lack of self control, not because people started selling 800 calorie milkshakes (although I know the temptation doesn’t help). I have had 1 milkshake in the 2 years they have been out…..however I eat chick-fil-a about 5 times a week. We can’t punish those skinny people who can have 20 milkshakes and not gain an ounce….if you are fat, practice self control….I am getting to my goal weight, and I thank Chick-fil-A for helping.
    Hi Lawren–
Thanks for help setting the record straight.  You can lose weight eating at Chick-fil-A.  The chicken at Chick-fil-A is very good, and I’ve eaten a lot of it in years gone by when I lived near a store.  If you eat nothing but the chicken at Chick-fil-A, you will do fine.
I don’t know that I agree with you that the reason most Americans are overweight is due to lack of self control.  We probably have as much self control now (as a nation) as we did 50 years ago, yet there wasn’t nearly as much obesity then.  And people ate more fat than they do today.  The problem runs much deeper.
The so-called skinny people who can consume 20 of the milkshakes I blogged about and not gain weight are a myth.  Or they are adolescents who are converting much of the energy into growth.  Even they, however, will ultimately pay the price.

  8. I am 9 months pregnant and got this fabulousness the other day. I meant to share some of it with my 2 year old who was in the back seat and I couldn’t/didn’t stop until it was gone. It was pure bliss for me and baby to be. After, I felt great because I knew I would never drink another one again. I told my friend this exactly today…”I bet that thing had 800 calories in it”. And then I came across the facts! HA.. jokes on me.

  9. I love Chick-fil-A’s milkshakes! Just the thing to cool you off on a hot day!
    Blessings-
    Katherine
    Hi Katherine–
Ah, it’s too bad that cooling you off on a hot day isn’t the only thing they do…

  10. hahahhahahahha what the pregnant lady said was pure comedy! i confess i am a chickfila milkshake fiend. you know they say the first hit is always free right…well thats true. one of our customers is a VP with the company and he happened to be handing out free coupons for them and i took one smh. id heard they were very good…i wish id never walked in that place lol. i got the first one free and turned right around and bought ANOTHER ONE. i had one everyday for the next week! smh my girlfriend and coworkers tried to warn me about the calories but i had to see for myself.
    Addictive, yes.

  11. WOW! I’d never would have guessed it would have that many calories! I was just sipping on my husband’s CFA milk shake by the computer and was thinking to myself, “I wonder how many calories are in this thing, I’d better try and google it”. Guess I’ll stick to my strawberry banana soymilk smoothies. But it does taste good. However, with knowledge comes power. (my sister came over with a starbucks strawberry and cream frappuccino with whip cream, because they closed the smoothie place by our home down, I sipped some and in a word..DELICIOUS. The first thing I asked her was how many calories are in this…she didn’t know. I googled it..770!! I won’t be buying one of those…again with knowledge comes power. Thanks again!!
Pretty calorically rich, that’s for sure.
    Cheers–
