For those who didn’t grow up with it or those who did and just don’t remember, it’s hard to imagine how pervasive cigarette ads were in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Here America’s cuddliest family lights up. Is it any wonder that everyone smoked back then?

Lynn + Mike–So true. A few days ago the “food and drink” section of the local paper had an article by a licensed/registered dietician about nutrition for athletes. The author recommended “getting carbs up” and shared a “trail mix” recipe which called for “oat squares” cereal, margerine, and brown sugar, and dried fruit. All I could do was shake my head.

You want to make sure to add margarine to your trail mix because you sure wouldn’t want any of that awful saturated fats mixed in with your carbs. Geez.

I remember my kids being shocked when they saw the movie Forrest Gump. There’s a scene with the doc smoking while talking to Forrest’s mom.
I also remember hearing as a kid people being advised to smoke by their docs to “help them relax”! (yea I guess I’m aging myself!)

My mother was advised by her doctor to continue to smoke while she was pregnant with me. He told her that if she quit while she was going through pregnancy that she would become a basket case.

I grew up listening to cassette tapes of Dargnet shows (not sure how my Dad got them). He spent time splicing the commertials out of those tapes, but I heard many tapes with the commertials still on them, and the main sponser was Fatima cigarettes.
