September is traditionally the month in this country that school begins and the enthusiasm for learning is at its peak. Soon, however, it can become the same old grind unless we actually adjust our attitude to prevent that.

If you recall, our goal in August was to do some reading to refresh our knowledge of the Protein Power plan and to report back when we found something we hadn’t noticed before or had forgotten. I didn’t get the response I was looking for, so let’s adjust our attitude and do a re-cap!

One aspect of the book (any of the PP books) you missed the first time around

Something new from Dr. Mike’s blog that wasn’t covered in the books

A helpful hint from another forum member or the archives, that works for you

A new menu item that has made your life/schedule easier

Accountability is good, but it’s too easy to fall into the daily routine, get bored and stop thinking about our progress. We need to find our areas of weakness and study solutions!

I'm in! I have been re-reading PPLP and have folded down pages that I wanted to comment/post on just haven't gotten around to it yet ;)

I ended August 5 pounds heavier than I started it :( I'm determined to buckle down. Life stresses just aren't a good excuse.

They are a force to be dealt with, though! :jawDrop: Once I recognize a problem, I start using Fitday again. Somehow, seeing the numbers makes me want to make them work. Sometimes my accounting background comes in handy. :p

Anyway, we'd be happy to have you share some of your folded-page info. :)

I have GOT to read my PP again this month. I intended to last month with the challenge and then life just got so chaotic. I need a kick in the butt to remind me how to really optimize my eating for a bit more weight loss.

I'm feeling really blue today and I should NOT be feeling that way (DD is feeling better after a fever/flu, and I got some good news yesterday about something else), so I can't explain it but it does rather make me want to eat chocolate. Sigh.

We have no almond meal in the house so I can't make breakfast bars, but will have oopsie rolls in the toaster oven with cheese for lunch, and some turkey vegetable soup for supper.

Lunch was pretty yummy today: chicken and cabbage. I also bought some more smoked gouda but this brand isn't as good as the raw milk one I bought last time. It's "maple leaf apple smoked gouda". It smells better than it tastes which is kind of weird.

Anywhoo, my totals so far for the day are 1400 calories, 15 carbs and 121 protein. Based on that I'm going to change dinner to something a little lower in calories, my goal now is 1500-1800 calories/day.

Well okay day for me today. Shake for breakfast, cheeseburger for lunch (no bun), some cheese for snack..... bit rough but not horrible when I got home from work, PB, tuna, almonds and Lindt.... course that filled me up, never fully hungry for dinner, but currently (very late!) working on a shake so I don't go to bed not eating anything. We had dinner so early last night that I woke up at 3:30 with my tummy growling :(

On hiatus from PPLP at the moment (reading some Jack the Ripper stuff).. but I can still share from what I marked last month.

Section on page 53 spoke to me, about Metformin, which I am on. So many blogs/commenters lately seem to bash Metformin as a crutch or something ("I can eat all the carbs I want and just take my Metformin" kind of thing) and that has bothered me as I didn't think it worked quite like that and I knew the Eades had mentioned using it. My Rx info doesn't really go into what it "does" only the side-effects and warnings, so it was nice to re-read this.

Metformin, marketed under the trade name Glucophage, already has an extensive track record in Europe and Canada, where it's been in wide use for over twenty years. We've used this drug extensively and much prefer it to troglitazone for effectiveness, even without the specter of liver damage in the picture. It's the drug we turn to on the rare occasions when lowering blood sugar levels in type II diabetics requires a drug. Unlike other oral diabetic medications (particularly those in the sulfonylurea class) that whip the already fatigued and struggling pancreas to make more insulin - an action, by the way, that will almost invariably lead to what's called beta-cell burnout, the point at which the pancreas simply gives up trying to produce insulin at all - metformin increases the insulin sensitivity of the liver cells (emphasis mine). The reason that this action is important is that the sugar in your blood comes not just from the breakdown of the carbohydrates in the food you eat but also from the glucose your liver produces every day from amino acids. Normally, rising insulin acts to block the liver's sugar production, but when the insulin receptors in the liver become resistant, that action fails and the liver cranks out sugar unabated. This liver output accounts for the phenomenon seen in some diabetics whose blood sugar upon retiring to bed may be a well -controlled 95 mg/dl and then will mysteriously rise to 140 mg/dl by morning, when they've eaten nothing during the night. Metformin can pick up the slack by heightening the sensitivity of the liver's insulin receptors, thereby reducing the liver's output of sugar - and thus helping to achieve better sugar balance.

Sorry that was so long, wanted to get it all in. I've never actually be diagnosed as full out diabetic, my fasting #s are always in the grey area and my A1Cs come in good, but my doctor has me on the meds in an attempt to keep me from actually becoming officially diabetic.

So that's my sharing for the evening. I've precooked some chicken tonight to use in a crock-pot meal for tomorrow. There will be noodles, but am using about 1/2 of what is called for and will do my best to pick out any that wind up on my plate. The rest is chicken, various cheeses, peppers, onions, etc...

Hi, y'all,
Carol, thanks for the "kick in the butt" for me, too.
I started the "six week cure" but seems I never have a minute to post anything. Will try to do better this month.
Did you use the free Fitday or use the version that costs? Fitday always seems so cumbersome.
I agree, Becca, life's stresses should not be an excuse, but oh, sometimes for me they definetly are.

I actually gained 2 lbs this month.
Time to buckle down.

Totals today: 27.5carbs 87 protein.

On hiatus from PPLP at the moment (reading some Jack the Ripper stuff).. but I can still share from what I marked last month.Yes, you certainly can, Becca! That was an interesting piece on the Metformin. I've never been on it but I do know, from a diabetic forum, that some people tolerate it better than others. I'm glad it works for you and that your doctor is using it early enough.

Carol, thanks for the "kick in the butt" for me, too. My pleasure, Claudette!

Did you use the free Fitday or use the version that costs? Fitday always seems so cumbersome.I use the free one. I've been using it for years and I have quite a few "custom" foods (like Lindt!) that make it easier to choose. I don't use it on days when there are soups and casseroles because there's no way to approximate. I also tend to stick to plain food as much as possible.

I'm back in pain...literally (my BACK in in PAIN). This sucks!!!!
Next week I have 2 PT appts and I see the Ortho. I'm hoping I get some kind of shot that will take away the pain so I can fix the problem. Tylenol and Ibu arent' working....but it's not bad enough (nor do I want to sleep away my days) to take Vicodin.
It would be nice to be able to make it through a workday without pain, and it would be super duper nice to be able to sleep through a night!
I start hurting at 12:45 (3hrs left of work) and I start hurting at 3am (3hrs left of sleeping). So it seems 5hrs are my max to work or sleep.
sigh...
sorry to be so crabby.

I am planning my food for next week.
Shake for breakfast and supper, meal for lunch. Just for a week while I get my eating back under control.

It's the 5th and I'm still wondering how it's already September.

I don't have anything new off-hand to share. I wish Dr. Mike had more time to blog. Following him on twitter has mixed results as often the links are abstracts and/or something that is a bit over my head. On the blog front I do enjoy following Tom Naughton (http://www.fathead-movie.com/) and Dana Carpender (http://holdthetoast.com/).

I'll be taking a vacation in the near future. In preparation for the drive I ordered a couple new books that should teach me some new things that hopefully I'll remember to post about :) The books: Gary Taubes Why We Get Fat and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis. Wheat Belly was recently reviewed by both Tom and Dana and seemed really interesting. Even though I get most books these days in ebook form I bought these as paper page books in hopes of lending them. I have high hopes for Wheat Belly as my family could most likely be convinced a gluten free diet is healthy whereas they don't seem to be willing to consider low-carb.

I don't generally track calories but lately I'm getting the feeling that there's not a lot of leeway in what I eat. If I pull off the perfect week I'll usually be primed for a new low between Tuesday and Thursday. Otherwise it comes down to waiting for the next week. And when I reference not being perfect I'm not talking about a carb binge, I'm talking a slightly too large portion at dinner or one of my meals not being a shake. Bleh.

Though after saying that I did hit a new low today by 0.8. Ate more than I should have at a family cookout yesterday and wasn't at a low this morning but after a normal breakfast and yard work all morning I found myself with a rare mid day low.

Hi, y'all,

Goose, look forward to hear your post about the new books.
Carol, hope your day was good.
Tracy, hope your tooth gets to feeling better.

Today was great.

Back is feeling so much better, I went to the state park and walked with the kids, GB and DH for about 40 minutes. Not the most difficult trail, but still a trail. The weather was in the 80's so it felt sooo good.
I am alittle sore, but hope it will be worth it.
FIL came for cookout tonight.

Well, went alittle overboard today on the watermelon, but I hope that won't do me in.

Pro: 90 Carb: probably in the 50's.

Scale also moved downward 1.6lbs. ticker adjusted.

snack: hard salami

I had a few days of crappy eating but I'm officially back on track today. I keep thinking of myself weighing 240 and it makes me straighten up. I haven't weighed myself because I'm sure to have a little extra water weight, last time I went on a binge there was about a 5-6 lb gain so I won't weigh again until Friday or Saturday.

Food for the day:

b-fried egg and lc chocolate bar
l- Mcdonald's angus burger (no bun) and sugar free iced coffee
d-shake with cream
s-a few slices of bacon

Congrats on the new low, but do you really weigh that often? I avoid stepping on the scale any more than I have to. :paranoid
Most of the time I don't particularly during the day as I'm at work. Lately I've been stepping on it at random times just to see how my body progresses through the day.

For instance, I know there's a good chance I'll hit a new low in the morning if I'm within 1 lb of my low pre-dinner. Plus it's really good motivation not to embiggen my dinner portions :)

The real reason I stepped on the scale in the middle of the day yesterday: routine. I normally get up, hit the scale, take a shower, get on with my day. Kids were at my parent's so I slept in, then decided to do yardwork before my shower. So after I came in the routine kicked in with me checking the scale pre-shower.

One aspect of the book (any of the PP books) you missed the first time around

Insulin is a fat storage hormone. It KEEPS fat stored if it is present in the blood stream. No matter how hard you work out.,..you will not burn fat if insulin is present in your blood stream!!!! Every one is different. If you eat too many carbs for your body, you will make too much insulin if you are insulin resistant and you can not burn fat for fuel. You won't burn fat for fuel . When your body tries to fuel itself, it cannot and you will feel hungry.

Something new from Dr. Mike’s blog that wasn’t covered in the books hmmm have to think on that one...something about Paleo that made me do more Paleo research.

A helpful hint from another forum member or the archives, that works for you one minute choc cake if I have too much of a craving...

A new menu item that has made your life/schedule easier

see above...and if I can't stand cravings for ice cream...I put 2 cups of frozen blueberries in my food processor and turn it on. I slowly add whipping cream until it is like soft serve ice cream. 1/2 cup is around 8 carbs. I absolutely do not miss the sugar.

Hey, it counts! I've also noticed that it doesn't hurt to check the size of their slices. Some are automatically an ounce but some aren't.

Well in this case I actually have the Kraft slices (yes, the processed plastic type :( ) programmed as a custom food as none of the pre-done ones exactly matched the info on the box, so it was just a matter of I had 1 not 4. Course I realized today I forgot to include the green beans I had with my salmon.. so numbers a bit up, but not nearly as much of a difference as the cheese made.

Hanging on by a thread today... brought home a candy bar for DD2 (someone doing fundraiser at work) I wasn't even tempted... so that was good. But then had the non-stop (or so it felt) hungries this afternoon when I got home. I haven't actually had dinner yet (it's cooking), but went ahead and plugged in the numbers and wow! I've eaten a lot today, but it could be worse.

Am missing my snack cheese (need to make a Sam's run)... was hoping going a few days without it would break me of the habit (and thus cut back on dairy) but I think it might be impacting the afternoon hungries (as I didn't have my snack at work). Hopefully will go shopping tomorrow.

I still have folded down pages to share, so maybe in a post later tonight :)

Amy glad you're feeling better! Pain (or illness) is a sure-fire way to derail me!

'becca..if you eat more fat and lower the carbs, the craving will disappear. Any time I eat too many carbs I start craving them. It does not take much for me. Some times I eat small amounts of protein throughout the day to eat 6 smaller meals just to keep from craving. I add coconut oil when I start craving too. I eat about 3 or four tablespoons.

Lynn... I do try to do this, although I tend to get more like 5 meals. I think that's why not having my cheese with me at work (fat/protein) is making a difference. I was STARVING when I got home and thus had way more than I normally would have for my afternoon snack/mini-meal. I'm still working on ingesting coconut oil "straight", I can put it in my shakes fine, but just eating it out of the container is still a bit much ;)

I decided that my dinner numbers are probably over-inflated simply because of how much of the sauce/cheese was left in the pan, but left my Fitday numbers as is (1/4 of the total recipe). After discussing with DH and DD2, think in the future we will make less sauce since it's just the 3 of us now.

So today's numbers:

Protein 178.9
ECCS 54.5
Water 112
Supplements - morning stuff done
Calories 2683

Time for my sharing... the next folded down page is #73 in my paperback PPLP. It's in the chapter "The Fat of the Land". Concerning Omega 6:Omega 3

Just a small portion really sticks out to me, relating to some other things I've been reading elsewhere:

When cattle are fed out on a feedlot to fatten them up, they eat grain that contains omega-6 fatty acids, which are incorporated into their fat. Grain-fed beef has an omega 6 - to - omega 3 ratio of 15:1 or so, instead of the 2:1 found in the meat of game. So even eating beef - if it's grain fed - gives you an increased omega 6 - to - omega 3 ratio.

I wish I could afford grass-fed stuff, but that's just not practical for us at this stage. I have read elsewhere (MDA if I recall) that if you must by grain fed for financial reasons, then it is best to go with the lower fat products (and removing skin from chicken, trimming the steaks etc..) and add back in other "good" fats (butter, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.. ) rather than eat the Omega 6 laden fat that comes with these products. Generally when doing LC it is also HF, but still need to be mindful of the sources of the fat.

Time for my sharing... the next folded down page is #73 in my paperback PPLP. It's in the chapter "The Fat of the Land". Concerning Omega 6:Omega 3

Just a small portion really sticks out to me, relating to some other things I've been reading elsewhere:

Well the scale dropped, but I did eat an entire other meal last night after I got home!! I was pretty hungry, a bit too hungry.
So I decided that even with adding the protein and some carbs, I was still doing MUCH better than I have in months, and the 2lb drop reinforced that.
I had PT yesterday which turned out to be quite the resistance workout...talk about BURNING muscles...then I got on the eliptical for 10min. I know it's not alot, but cripes, I was exhausted.

Yes, I suppose that means I'm THAT out of shape...:(

7am strawberry shake
10:30 6slices salami, zucchini, pickle sized cuke
2pm lc goulash, edamame
6pm strawberry shake, 1oz nuts

...something about Paleo that made me do more Paleo research. The main idea I have from Paleo advocates is to use whole foods and home cooking. That can be blended easily with PP.

...and if I can't stand cravings for ice cream...I put 2 cups of frozen blueberries in my food processor and turn it on. I slowly add whipping cream until it is like soft serve ice cream. 1/2 cup is around 8 carbs. I absolutely do not miss the sugar. That sounds good, Lynn. I put them whole in greek yogurt with cinnamon for the same effect.

...programmed as a custom food as none of the pre-done ones exactly matched the info on the box,...I have found a few discrepancies when I've had a package to check.

Another day missed here on the forum... some day soon my life will seem to settle down and I'll be bored. ;) Yesterday we were burying my great-aunt... such a strong and courageous lady with more heartbreak in a lifetime than any one person should ever have to face. Anyway...

We went out to a restaurant after the service and I had chicken strips and coleslaw, so not 100% good but not too bad either. Very lightly breaded at this place. Had leftover ribs yesterday too.

Today we're having a potluck for DH's work at our house, and we're only providing drinks, etc., so I don't even know what will be PP friendly. But I'm planning to snack late in the day and then if there isn't anything very PP friendly I can just eat something later. Tonight I'm actually slipping out of the potluck here to go to an "awards ceremony" (sounds grand, but it's just at the library!) for a local photo competition that I won! I'm kind of psyched about that. :) Anyway, I think I will be able to manage food-wise and if need be, I can nibble on a breakfast bar on the way to the library. :)

 That's a new word for me! Whatever it takes, Goose. ;) It makes sense since you explained it. Kind of an "off-schedule" day.
It's a perfectly cromulent word. ;)

But then had the non-stop (or so it felt) hungries this afternoon when I got home. I haven't actually had dinner yet (it's cooking), but went ahead and plugged in the numbers and wow! I've eaten a lot today, but it could be worse.
Not sure if it'll help but I used to have troubles making it to lunch without being hungry. I fixed it by adding a spoonful of coconut oil (weird consistency but no flavor) to my breakfast (sometimes I just eat a spoonful plain, others I'll put it in my eggs).

I had a pretty good day. Hit a new low. Did better at portions last night than tonight but it wasn't horrible (chicken thighs & twice baked fauxtatoes).

Hit a new low.Nice! Good job!

Nice to hear you lost 1/2 lb. too, Ammy!

So........ I had a lousy, no-good potluck last night. 20 people here, and the total amount of protein was a chunk of brie and two small chunks of salmon (about 2 salmon steaks total). For everyone. And I had my plan before, about what to do if there wasn't much protein. But then all these people were here, I barely know them, and no one was starting to eat and I had to go to the awards thing at the library, so I got my plate, went up to the buffet and felt all eyes on me, and couldn't figure how to politely take only coleslaw and raw veggies (the salmon and brie hadn't arrived at this point -- they came together, late), so I started dishing out a little of everything and ended up with carb city. Then later I figured I'd messed up already, and so why the heck shouldn't I eat a brownie?

Duh.

:(

Oh well. Life goes on. I will do well today. I've got to take the rest of the dessert leftovers to DH's work today (he can't, he bikes to his carpool) and get them out of the house, and take the kids for a walk and eat some good protein today.

Thank you, BTW, for the kind comments about my photos. It was fun to win, no matter how small a competition it was! I really love photography. (If anyone's interested in seeing (or buying?!) any of my work, check out my portfolio on RedBubble.com (http://www.redbubble.com/people/tracelle).)

Sorry I'm exaggerating, this isn't quite Noah level flooding but it's enough to cause problems (my MIL's basement had an inch or two of water for example). I live in Maryland and at least Mother Nature gave us about a week between the earth quake and hurricane and two days in a row of non stop rain.

Good afternoon... I didn't get here post last night, yesterday was on target.

We had dinner early so DD2 could go to church, but about 1.5 hours after dinner (at the normal dinner time) I was hungry again... as I was low on protein and calories (for me) I figured I'd go ahead and find something. Decided on a shake, but it didn't go down too well..... used a room temp diet Cheerwine, no cream (am out :( ) added coconut oil and vanilla powder... didn't even get it finished it was turning my stomach so badly. Not sure if the oil/soda didn't mix or if my powder had gone bad (did find out it "expired" last month)... so went to bed early. And then didn't sleep well :(

So have been dragging today.... on plan so far, but know I will be off as dinner plans are Moe's (free entree for my b-day) so quesadilla and chips. At least it's cage-free chicken :D Will be back on track tomorrow for sure though.

Dinner was good.. and didn't even get a refill on chips, so that's progress. I entered my numbers into Fitday just for record keeping but was high on everything as expected.

I have found that I'm not bothered (either emotionally or by it leading to more carbs) by the "planned" off times (such as tonight) as I am by the times when I cave to carbs cuz of stress or fatigue or other reasons. Much easier to keep it under control and to not beat myself up over it when it's known well in advance.

That's why I will usually make a definite plan to "cheat" on Christmas or my birthday or whatever... because if I plan it, I can cope, not beat myself up if I cave and eat carbage, and most importantly, without the emotional stress of beating myself up for screwing up and everything, it's that much easier to get right back on plan when my "cheat" day is over.

Today was pretty good on carbs but I didn't track in fatsecret. The most carby thing I had was a YUMMY tomato salad (oh gosh I'll have to find a recipe for that, got it from the museum cafe).

The museum (of natural history) was really cool and it made me think of PP as I was looking at the skulls of "human ancestors" and the museum guide was looking at the skulls and telling us some of the features of the primates that had a primarily "veggie" diet like huge teeth and a "ridge" in the skull that would help them chew through thick branches. Needless to say the "homo" skulls didn't have those same features.

Not at all, although it was just a one-day thing with foods I was curious about. I ate ham and cheese and two ounces of a nut mixture containing about five raisins. In two hours, my bg hadn't moved at all, which surprised me. The next test showed it was still down. I plan to repeat that another day. Lindt 90% (4 squares!) didn't register at all in two hours. Normally, I only have two and count the net carbs. I'll repeat that one sometime too. Greek yogurt with no berries sent bg up ten points in two hours. That was expected.

Today meals and snacks are planned.Good job, Claudette! I hope you have a nice walk. I saw that the heat is back up. I wish I could send you our frost warnings for later this week. Yes! And I saw some red leaves yesterday. We aren't even "up north"!

I was re-organizing my file box this morning and came up on a 20-yo allergy test. It showed I had a reaction to egg whites, with which I don't seem to have a problem. What I didn't recall was a lesser reaction to peanuts (all legumes), beef and pork! :suspicious: It didn't mention shellfish, which makes me sick. Anyway, I've been told that sometimes we're drawn to foods that our bodies react to in a bad way (peanut butter? hmmm!). Thank goodness chocolate/cocoa was a neutral. :D

Hi, I'm new. :-) May I participate too?

I just downloaded PP, so I haven't had a chance to read it or compare it to Dr. Mike's blog.

I'm starting my second week of The Six Week Cure. My first week was very successful, though I did make a couple of changes late in the week -- namely, I switched from whey protein to egg protein, and I reduced the total amount of protein I was getting in a day to the amount recommended in Protein Power.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the 3-1 protocol. I'm not hungry, and not obsessed with food. My meals have mostly been simple meat and vegetables. My total carb intake has been below 30 each day. The success I'm most proud of is eating out twice this weekend and sticking to plan each time. My husband wants to go out again tonight, so we'll see how I do!

Although I'm following The Six Week Cure, I'm doing so within the parameters of Primal (http://www.marksdailyapple.com/) (similar to Paleo). So overall no grains, beans/legumes, starchy carbs, or sugars. Fruit and dairy in moderation -- but for me, I consider it extreme moderation.

Anyway, we'll see how I do at dinner tonight!

Welcome Melissa.... Primal can fit in here, would be like the "purist" version discussed in PPLP. I am giving Mark's 30-day challenge a whirl beginning today too.

And on that note... today has been good. Assuming I eat 1/3 of the meal about to be cooked for dinner I'll be in good shape, other than possibly too much protein (always an issue with me). I try not to worry overmuch about it, today's will be about equal to 1 gram per pound of LBM so not horrible, but over my minimum.

I ate my lunch outside in a very small grassy spot at work today. 15 minutes of sunshine.

DD2 and I also went for a walk today... only 23 minutes, but it was something.

Hi Melissa, welcome!

Hi everyone, another busy weekend. This week should be really normal... back into our non-school schedule ;) i.e. where my kids aren't IN school but life is not full of summer "oddities" in the schedule either. I think that will help my eating.

I made cheeseburger pie for the family tonight, and got out a hamburger patty for myself from the freezer, as the pie is 50% biscuit crust and you'd get so relatively little protein scraping it off the top that it's not worth it.

Hi, I'm new. :-) May I participate too?Absolutely, Melissa! I'm sorry I didn't mention it. I usually do!

I just downloaded PP, so I haven't had a chance to read it or compare it to Dr. Mike's blog. I like it because of the science behind it. I'm a nitpicker and I always have to know "why".

I'm starting my second week of The Six Week Cure. My first week was very successful, though I did make a couple of changes late in the week -- namely, I switched from whey protein to egg protein, and I reduced the total amount of protein I was getting in a day to the amount recommended in Protein Power.I never tried the egg protein. How do you like it?

I'm not hungry, and not obsessed with food. That's my favorite part of the program. Lack of obsession.

So overall no grains, beans/legumes, starchy carbs, or sugars. Fruit and dairy in moderation -- but for me, I consider it extreme moderation.
I really like MDA and I read it every day. There should be no conflict with PP the way you're doing it.

It's not a perfect world and feelings certainly can throw in a monkey wrench.

Good morning ladies!

DD2 and I have gotten off to a good start today... I made us scrambled eggs for breakfast.. which I had with bacon (she had with milk).

I have done some exercising... wall pushups, wall squats, some chest press work and planks for my abs.

Before all that I got dinner into the crock pot - sirloin roast with 1 big potato (to feed 3), baby carrots and some onion (and spices). Really trying to do a lot of that kind of thing on the late days so dinner is a non-issue when I get home and am too tired to deal. Also will be very high in protein that meal unless we don't eat the entire thing. I entered all the ingredients into my "spare" Fitday account and the entire batch has 234g of protein  so at 1/3 of that would be 70+ just in one meal.

As I don't get an official lunch break on the late (also shorter) days I need to take "finger foods" to eat... so will cut up a chicken breast and pair it with some cheese and probably apple slices or strawberries.

Am very very sore from my exercises and I remember now that the last time I tried this I couldn't walk for 2 days. Think I forgot to mention that DD2 basically guilted me into doing them this morning too ;)

Having her do this with me for the next 30 days (the MDA challenge) is a HUGE help!

Hi, Y'all,

Carol, glad egg whites don't bother you anymore. Just be careful. Some allergies we think we have gotten over can sneak back in. Very interesting on your BS checks. If you could, I would loooove some frost. If we hit the 106 mark today, we will break the 1980 record by one day.:(
Melissa, welcome. Lot's of great support here.
Tracy, way to go on not eating the casserole. Those are so temping to me.
Becca, I love doing some exercise in the am. Then My excuses are out the door.

Menu for today:
B: isopure whey in hood milk w/ few raw cherries(last of the lot) w/ added fiber
S; kroger carb master yogurt w/ pears
L: 1/2 cup of cottage cheese w/ 1/8th of canteloupe, sf jello,Atkins strawberry shake
Planned:
S:1oz of boar's head deli chicken, three more cherries
D: leftover boar's head Brautwurst, veggie, green tossed salad.

I can do this!

That's my favorite part of the program. Lack of obsession.Isn't that the truth?

I'm doing all right today, but really wiped out. I'm seeing my rheumatologist next week and I just really want some better answers for my meds than ones that (a) wreak havoc on my stomach and make me eat crackers because I need to calm my tummy down; (b) make me nauseous; and (c) make me too exhausted to do what I want to do, especially being a good mom to my kids. Tired of it ALL. :(

But I have stayed on track today, have some delicious chicken stir fry planned for supper, and had some leftover bacon for lunch.

Well for all my hard work and planning this morning I forgot one key thing... I forgot to turn on the crock pot! :o I was bragging on myself at work ;) when it dawned on me that I didn't remember actually turning it on (or smelling aromas when I left for work 2.5 hours after it should've been turned on). Thankfully I was able to get hold my SIL and she came by with the key my in-laws keep and turned it on for me (just high instead of low). Was very very yummy when we did finally sit down to eat it!

My favorite author has a new book out today so will be heading to bed to read soon, suspect I won't be getting my 8 hours in tonight ;)

Downside to things in the crockpot (or any "combination") dish is figuring out what I really had to eat. I just calculated the amounts for the entire batch and figured I had 1/3 of it all.

Totals for today:

Protein: 157.8 (basically 1/2 of that was at dinner)
ECCs: 45.5
Water: 80 + 8 oz PowerAde Zero
Supplements: done
Exercise: done (detailed earlier if I recall)

Hi everyone!

I was swamped yesterday. Tried to get here to post -- was able to read and stay caught up -- but I just couldn't make time to type. :)

I never tried the egg protein. How do you like it?
Well, in fairness, I don't know. I make my shakes with unsweetened coconut milk, Athletic Greens, and a BCAA additive. By the time it's all mixed together, I have to say I have no clue what the egg protein tastes like. I don't especially like the shakes with all the additives in there, but I can tolerate it.

And a bonus of 15 minutes of sunshine :)
Good for you, 'becca. That's the thing I never get, even though I know I should. Let's just say that I was born to be a vampire. Or a cave dweller.

If we hit the 106 mark today, we will break the 1980 record by one day. :(
Did you hit it? I live near Seattle, and we broke a record for the most consecutive 80+ days in September this year. Humorous, because there was a point in August where the National Weather Service noted that we'd had only a few hours above 80 during this entire year.

I'm doing all right today, but really wiped out. I hope you find the answers you need, Tracy!

It sounds like everyone is doing really well! Congrats and well done.

I didn't do horribly on Monday night, but I definitely didn't eat entirely to plan. We went to a Brazilian restaurant and had rodizio-style food. I did great at the salad bar, and I expected to over-indulge on the meat. What I didn't expect were the starchy sides they brought to the table. They brought fried polenta sprinkled with parmesan, cheesy bread, garlic mashed potatoes, and baked bananas with cinnamon. The latter three were very good, but I think I can skip them in the future. Fried polenta is a favorite of mine, and this was fabulous. I consider it worth a cheat. I had some of all of the sides, but I didn't over-indulge with any. All-in-all, I'm not disappointed.

Yesterday and today, I'm back on plan. I'm in the 3-1 stage, so I only have to worry about one meal a day. (I *love* that. I could easily adopt this as a full-time eating plan.) Flank steak, cucumber and tomato from the garden, avocado, and some asparagus last night. Probably more of the same today.

We're about 15 minutes outside of Duvall (which is due west of Woodinville). Our summer was very mild too, but I loved it. I'm a cool weather gal, and since the house isn't air conditioned and our bedroom is on the top floor, I'm thrilled the house didn't get overly hot.

We had enough sun to ripen my tomatoes, and that's all I really needed. Tomatoes, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, and blackberries were all wonderful this year. Not sure we'll have the right weather to ripen the corn -- but we'll see!! (It's a very small garden.)

I have friends who live in Sumas, and my first Newf's breeder (Denise Castonguay/CastaNewf) lives across the border in Maple Ridge, BC.

Born to be a vampire and living outside Seattle - are you related to the Cullens ;) DH's brother and his wife live up that way (Shoreline), we visited once (back in 89 before the BIL was married). I remember it being very very damp :)

I love the sun just hate the heat in SC.

I ate outside again today too, so got a bit more.. though only my feet, arms, face and neck are exposed, but every bit helps!

Food was good.... bacon/eggs for breakfast; chicken Caesar salad and apples for lunch; tuna and homemade mayo for my snack (DH Made me some using the Eades recipe from the 30day book); had planned on a burger patty for dinner but wasn't overly hungry (but too hungry to go to bed without anything) so opted for a shake. Almost forgot I had almonds and Lindt at work.

Numbers for today:

ECCs: 27.2
Water: 132

Exercise: 20 minute walk

Figured I'd share more of my folded-down pages from PPLP tonight to keep things in the spirit of the challenge for the month:

Page 95 in the chapter on Cholesterol

Although people are all too familiar with the supposed risks of high cholesterol, many people are unaware of the newer research that has shown that a high triglyceride level puts you at the highest risk of all for having a heart attack. For that reason, we're far more concerned with our patients' triglyceride readings than with what their cholesterol is. A triglyceride measurment - an easy and relatively inexpensive test to do - gives a reasonable reflection of cardiovascular risk, since, as we've already mentioned, low triglyceride readins, in general, correlate with large, fluffy, less harmfull cotton ball LDLs. We like to keep the triglyceride readings of our patients below 100 mg/dl if possible - and in most cases the dietary changes alone will accomplish that goal.

Thank you, Becca. We're a little ahead of the game with that information, aren't we? So many people still dread cholesterol.

The stats that impressed me were that low cholesterol has more ills associated with it than high. Infections, for instance.

I drank a cup of coffee/cream today and had 4 pieces of bacon. went to work. At lunch I had some chicken ..about 10 oz. For dinner I made the pizza peppers. They are going into my hand made Paleo cookbook

Yesterday I got up drank some coffee with cream as I went to a women's prayer group I am in. I came home and drank another cup and took the dogs out for their morning walk.. The house where the prayer group meets is the Eye doctor friend of ours who takes us out to eat (flying in their plane to places we never would drive to) and invited us to share their time share in Hawaii last Christmas. . They both are busy and their daughter ,who is in college, gardens. She procrastinates a lot and they have had a pile of mulch in their driveway all summer . The weeds in the flower beds are waist high. One of the prayer ladies, on the way in, in the morning mentioned having to walk around the pile of much all summer.
When we were finished, about an hour later, I went back out to get in my truck and I looked around. I noticed a brick walkway completely over grown in weeds along the side of the house leading to a deck.. I wondered what it would look like if it was all weeded and mulched around the plants.. That was all it took. I made up my mind.. I went home and changed clothes. After my friends left for work, I drove back at 9 am and spent 6 hours, weeding 5 huge garbage cans full of weeds and spreading who knows how many wheelbarrow loads of mulch. I had a goal to get rid of ALL the mulch.
I had bought 8 mum plants before labor day to decorate the decks at our house for the family party. I figured the mums will die while we are on vacation so I went home and got them and made a flower bed next to the driveway. I planted the mums and mulched them too. They are every color. The flower beds next to the brick walk got mulched. I finished at 330pm and dragged my weary tail home to drown myself in a hot tub of Epson salt water. I was filthy. The mulch was black in color. So was I.
The place looks amazing. It made me smile . Someone must have seen me and told on me because later in the evening my friend came on face book and called me a maniac for doing it. Every muscle still hurts today...so I am taking a break from yesterdays work out.

The reason I am saying all of this is to say....

The thing that most astounded me was that I forgot to eat breakfast after the 2 coffee's with cream. I never got hungry and never even thought about food all day. I worked HARD and eating never crossed my mind. I drank about 2 quarts of water. After I took a bath I came out and ate 3/4 of an avocado and made my husband a stir fry with left over steak. Later in the evening I ate a handful of macadamia nuts. That was it for the day. I fell asleep in two seconds.

What's for dinner?

Pizza peppers

I bought 4 long banana sized banana peppers at the farmers market. I cut them down the middle like a banana split and cleaned out the seeds. I laid them on a cookie sheet covered with foil. I stuffed them with pizza sausage(gluten free of course). It took about a pound of sausage to fill 8 halves. I baked them at 400 for about half an hour, or until the sausage is thoroughly cooked and browning. I took them off and put them on plates, sprinkled them with a little mozz cheese.

While they were baking, I diced up about 6 to 8 plum tomatoes and sliced about 6 oz of mushrooms. I added some spices..basil garlic salt pepper and a little oregano and simmered them until the mushrooms were done in a small pan on the stove.
I spooned a little of the tomatoes, mushrooms and spices on top of the peppers after they were on the plate and sprinkled them with Parmesan cheese. Everything was hot and the cheese melted on its own. It turned out amazing.

I keep trying to figure out a Paleo style pizza. G'man LOVED this one. We each ate about 3 pepper halves. MMMMM mmmmm.

Muscles aren't nearly as bad as the last time I tried this. Walking fine at least. My arms/shoulders seem to bearing the brunt of it this time. Did the same exercises again this morning and I couldn't do as many wall pushups or hold the plank positions quite as long as my arms "gave out" (started shaking) on me. Definitely feeling things all over this morning though.

Have had my breakfast, scrambled eggs (with cream and cheese) and bacon (1 less slice than usual as I ran out)... on my 2nd 32oz bottle of water already and supplements have been taken.

Not quite sure what I'll take with me to work to eat as I don't take an actual lunch break on these late days, but still need food. DD2 has pointed out that we're down to 1 piece of the pre-cooked chicken so I guess I'll cook some more and maybe take that (though we're having chicken for dinner).

* Celery w/ peanut butter
* Other cut-up veggies

* Other fruit
* Cheese
* Grilled meat
* Protein shake

If you have a fridge at work, these are all pretty easy to eat at your desk while working.

I don't think they all are, but I do know that I get them 3-4 days after I get back on the wagon - even after a small fall - so I'm sure it contributes. Been taking my extra magnesium and potassiums too. And had a 2 hour nap which helped.

Dinner was Baton Rouge chicken (aka spicy blackened), steamed broccoli (very steamed this time so had to count it as cooked instead of raw), 1/2 cup yogurt and a few apple slices. Normally we have some sort of bread (biscuit or crescents) with this meal to help combat the spicy, substituted the yogurt/apples for the bread.

Today was a good day. I had bacon and eggs with some sliced cucumber for my one meal. Other than that, just the usual protein shakes. Love bacon and eggs. Yum!

I really, really, really like the 3-1 schedule. I don't like to cook or to worry about what I'm going to eat. I think I'm going to stick with it -- most of the time. I don't like keeping my calories at the same place all the time, so I'm going to have two days of somewhat higher calories. That will be when I schedule those dinners out or, if I have nothing on the calendar, an extra meal (2-2, rather than 3-1). I'm going to try to keep the non-Primal cheats (grains, for example) to just one day though. At least 6 days a week, I want to stick to <30 carbs.

Edited to add... Trina, do you know *why* you're bingeing?

Carbs today 5
I had coffee w cream and 5 pieces of bacon fro breakfast. I went to see the deer my sister got today with a bow and arrow...1 arrow, She hit a 12 point buck...good meat that venison.
Then I went to cash my check and ending up shopping all day and wandering around. I've dropped 2 sizes in jeans and I decided to buy some for the trip Saturday instead of sinching them up with a belt. I can pull them off and on with out unzipping.

I spent 2 hours in a Kroger grocery store looking for Paleo stuff. All their meat has additives in it. NOT GOOD>
I forgot to eat all day again. I came home and made some sausage and cheese. I feel too full right now.I only ate about 1/3 pound with some mozz cheese on it.

I am trying to think of stuff to take to Gatlinburg when i leave early Sat morning to spend a week with my very NON Paleo sister in-laws . I liked the list RAINSMOM made for Becca. I will make some hard boiled eggs for the trip. I am taking the stuff to make taco salad for the first night we are there. It will be easy to pack. I am bringing taco shells, chips and tostada shells for the muggles.(they who eat wheat and carbs)

We're about 15 minutes outside of Duvall (which is due west of Woodinville). Our summer was very mild too, but I loved it. I'm a cool weather gal, and since the house isn't air conditioned and our bedroom is on the top floor, I'm thrilled the house didn't get overly hot.My mom liked it too, but I am cold 9 months of the year, so was very sad about the cool summer. I love to be WARM! Oh well. You live in a lovely area.

After my friends left for work, I drove back at 9 am and spent 6 hours, weeding 5 huge garbage cans full of weeds and spreading who knows how many wheelbarrow loads of mulch. I had a goal to get rid of ALL the mulch.
I planted the mums and mulched them too.
The place looks amazing. That is so awesome!! How incredibly kind and thoughtful of you!!

I'm having a rough day... massive headache and craving Chick-Fil-A and peanut butter something fierce.

So I've made myself a giant bowl of tuna (2 cans) and having some almonds and Lindt and probably a nap/lie down.Sorry about your headache. :( I hope your nap helped, and go for you for doing the tuna and almonds instead of carbage!

My husband pretty much insulted/challenged me so I have to stop binging. As rainsmom asked, do you know why you're binging? Frustration? Boredom? Anger? What triggers it?

I have been having the roughest week being unbelievably tired. (I read yesterday that many people on the high dose that I take of one of my arthritis meds often end up getting B-12 shots for the extreme fatigue.) Anyway, I did manage to do tuna for lunch instead of caving and having a sandwich, which I felt was so much easier. Then DH came home and I was going to cook supper and he said, "Why don't we go out?" which is a rare treat indeed. But he was feeling for me in my fatigue, so we went and I had a really delicious spinach salad and some chicken.

Today is leftover chicken for lunch and I will probably be doing mac & cheese for the family and I usually cut up some sausage or hot dogs into it for their protein and keep out a good amount of that for myself.

Hi, y'all,

Quick posting as I am off today working on more school.

For the record, on Wednesday at my DIL's Birthday Party at TGIF, I did use self control.
Water with lemon and a grilled chicken salad with bacon, blue cheese bits, tomoto, eggs, lettuce, spinach, etc and blue cheese on top.
I only ate 9 small sweet potatoe fries from DH. (just love them, so I saved the carbs to have a taste).

Wed: total: carbs: 26, prot: 100.

Thurs: 40carbs, 111protein.

Ticker is adjusted to the latest weight.
Thank goodness it is going back down.

Planned today:
B: "egg & sausage mc muffin thingie from starbucks sans the muffin and breva latte
L: leftover homemade spaghetti (dreamfields) and meat sauce, green salad.
S: kroger carb master yogurt
D: hot dogs, (Hebrew National) steamed brocoli w slice of cheese, sf jello.

Have a great day, all.

Will post totals later.

I am actually amazed at how low my carbs have been even though I'm eating things like apples and yogurt and such. Even today had carrots which are higher in carbs. That means you're managing well, Becca.

I really, really, really like the 3-1 schedule. I don't like to cook or to worry about what I'm going to eat.It does make it simple!

I'm wondering that. I'm honestly just wasted on this one medication. It's a chemo drug so I understand it's hard on your system, but at my previous lower dose I was OK. This time it's different. I can't cope like this. Guess we'll find out more at my doctor's appointment on Monday.

We had rain and thunber last night ! ! !
Felt so very good.
My power kept going off, so I didn't want to risk my computer in a power surge, so I waited till today to post.

As usual, still working on grad school today.

Back is slowly getting better. If not in the triple digits today, will try to walk outside or will try the treadclimber again.

Brunch: late breakfast with FIL: two eggs, few slices of tomato, half slice of ham, iced tea.

Grocery store today, bought some interesting things to use in some Primal recipes.

Breakfast was leftover meatloaf
Lunch was tuna
Dinner pork chop and carrots

had cheese, almonds and Lindt at various points of the day as snacks

I went to an Irish Music Festival yesterday. I can't call it exercise because we sat a lot, but I avoided all the carby treats and ended up with a cobb salad that had rashers instead of bacon. Today, submitted one more lesson in this course.
Now, I only have a final paper to complete by the course end on Oct 13th.

Menu:

L: "fried chic" from the grocery store sans breading(DH loves it), green salad w/ avocado.

It's crazy expensive. Guess I will have to learn to do more in the kitchen, I already buy raw almonds for eating, just need to make my own meal and butter from them. Will still have to buy coconut stuff though.

I made some crackers yesterday that used walnuts, not too bad actually.

On the hope to make list:

Paleo Bread (will have to find/make flax meal for that one)
Coconut Pancakes
Nut crackers (uses almond meal)
Pumpkin muffins (if pumpkin ever becomes available)
Walnut brownies
chocolate coconut bark
and on the menu for this week is chicken w/ almond coconut dipping sauce

all but the bread are in the Primal Blueprint cookbooks, bread was from a link in a recent MDA post. I have the MDA e-cookbooks too, one of which is entirely coconut based and lots of interesting things in there too from what I've seen.

Today has been ok I guess... having major issues with my swallowing since Saturday (my GERD, no heartburn problems, food just won't go down).

Had scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast (and my assortment of pills/supplements)

Took some of the walnut crackers, apple slices and cheese to work

about to have tuna, almonds and Lindt

Dinner is to be Italian chicken and steamed broc

DWTS tonight too !

oh and did my exercises this morning (push ups, squats, plank, etc...)

Good news: My rheumatologist is changing my meds! He's adding in something that was really effective for me before (but is a court of last resorts for a few different reasons, mostly financial as it is VERY expensive). I hope and pray this will help me significantly.

Bad news: This new medication that is being added to my regimen makes me gain weight. :( I will have to be very vigilant and hope for the best.

More good news: Was out all day for this appointment, my family came with and we had lunch and dinner out, and I had chicken caesar for lunch and bunless burger and coleslaw for supper. So score for me, no caving!

Becca that sometimes happens to me. The doctor gave me nexium but they have prilosec over the counter which should help (I haven't been really reading everyone's posts for the past few days so sorry if this is a repeat or you've already stated you're taking something for it). What is the optimal way to handle that issue, Becca?

Well I have a prescription for generic Prevacid (have been on the non-generic version of that, Priolsec and Nexium over the years depending on insurance coverage). Tried OTC Nexium (I think it was, started with an O) but that didn't work for me. I've had this problem actually for YEARS. back in 2001 I had to have a procedure to deal with a stricture that had formed and wouldn't be surprised if I have another one in the works.

Anyways in an attempt to "save money" and trusting LC to reduce GERD symptoms I had actually cut way way back on my meds (to like 1 every 3 days instead of daily). I think that is basically what has caused everything to fall apart, so the past few days I've gone back to taking it DAILY. Even the generic is so expensive though. I may try the OTC Prevacid, dosage is 1/2 of my Rx but will see how it goes. Today did go much better.

No tomatoes though :) I think the main issue is that even though it is GERD related, my problem isn't the normal heartburn that most people think of when they hear GERD, it's the swallowing thing :( I hardly ever have heartburn, even when not taking my meds, maybe a couple of times a month.

So for today:

Did my exercises - push ups, squats, etc...

Breakfast was scrambled eggs and bacon
As it was a late breakfast I only took cheese, yogurt and apples to work (but only ate the cheese)
had the apples and yogurt, along with almonds and Lindt for afternoon snack
Dinner was leftover meatloaf and green beans

I'm actually not hungry as much anymore. Been hearing that about LC for years but it never seemed to apply to me! It's nice :)

So today's numbers:

Protein: 94.0 (a hair short of my minimum, but weekly average still way over)
ECCs: 29.2
Water: 112
Supplements: not today, didn't want to press my luck
Exercise: done

Sorry to hear about your GERD troubles, Becca. That sounds really lousy! :(

Carol, LOL about the voice in your head. Listen, the voice is usually right. ;)

And hey, do I REALLY have to stay up till 10 pm helping my kids when they're older? I thought when they hit kindergarten I just had to make lunches and buy them school clothes, and put my feet up after the toddler years. ;)

Trina, be strong!

Speaking of being strong during PMS, started my period today, so I'm gearing for an extra-hungry day. That usually happens to me at the start of my period. I have some cheese for snacks and some nuts as well, and one lonely breakfast bar left. Time to bake more.

The scale is down for me for the first time since my small summer gain, so I hope it's not just a fluke thing. Probably not: this past 10 days or so is the longest I've stayed on-plan since about July 1st, so maybe my body finally hit fat-burning mode again.

Yesterday was a little dicey, I had some serious carb creep but I'm still happy because I didn't give up even though my numbers weren't looking that great.

Today is going ok. I've had 20 carbs so far today so lunch and dinner will be pretty tight on carbs but doable.

I noticed that you eat Lindt quite often and chocolate was on my list of things that increase acid (sorry I know you don't want to hear that:o) When I eat a lot of carbs I alternate between heartburn and problems swallowing and my Dad got to a point where it was too stressful for him to sit down & eat dinner in front of us because of the swallowing problem (then my Mom would get irritated because she thought he was eating too fast or trying to swallow without chewing).
I really hope things get better for you and you find the right combo of meds/diet that prevents the acid.

I'm actually not hungry as much anymore. Been hearing that about LC for years but it never seemed to apply to me! It's nice :)
Yay! Sounds like you're finding what works for you, Becca. Sometimes it can be like a science experiment.

Carol, LOL about the voice in your head. Listen, the voice is usually right. ;)I learned that the hard way, Tracy. I found out if I ignore the tiny voice (and I do!) it becomes more like a bullhorn. Then a baseball bat! I'll end up taking measures anyway, so I might as well do it early. :p

And hey, do I REALLY have to stay up till 10 pm helping my kids when they're older? I thought when they hit kindergarten I just had to make lunches and buy them school clothes, and put my feet up after the toddler years. ;)

The scale is down for me for the first time since my small summer gain, so I hope it's not just a fluke thing. Probably not: this past 10 days or so is the longest I've stayed on-plan since about July 1st, so maybe my body finally hit fat-burning mode again. That's good news! It will help strengthen your efforts. :)

Yesterday was a little dicey, I had some serious carb creep but I'm still happy because I didn't give up even though my numbers weren't looking that great.

Today is going ok. I've had 20 carbs so far today so lunch and dinner will be pretty tight on carbs but doable.YES! Never give up. I know it's discouraging when we make a wrong choice, but it's not just a short-term diet here. Persistence pays off!

Amy! Where are you?

Holy cats! I haven't posted in awhile, eh?

We're dog sitting and I'm sooo tired! I haven't even been blogging?! I just don't have time. Adding 2 dogs to my schedule, 2 YOUNG dogs, is exhausting! Then at night the cats want attention since they hide all day, so I'm not sleeping without interruption at night either! ugh...

I tried to cook a meal the other day, but the dogs were either underfoot or outside barking to come in. Even THAT is exhausting. So I've been eating out, or buying precooked and eating at home. Not exactly "healthy" either. Last night was fried chicken...and yes I ate the crunchy coating. I had cottage cheese with it...it's all we had in the house.

The dogs leave on Sunday. I'm not saying that gives me license to eat until then, I'm just saying there is an end and it is near. Each day I try to eat low carb...and usually do until I get home. Then all bets are off. The other night I had popcorn for supper. I suppose that's better than having supper and ADDING popcorn, but....

So my plan today: I had a shake for breakfast. I had oopsie roll shepards pie and cukes and a rice crisps for lunch, and supper will be shredded BBQ chicken and lettuce.
For me, assuming I stay on plan, it will be a STELLAR day....

Hi Amy, I hate to compare children to dogs but when you said they were underfoot or otherwise making noise :o

UGH!! i know you guys get a bit more prep as you get these young'ens when they don't move, so you have a little more time to prepare for their groth and "active" days...but holy moly! I still don't know how you parental types do it!!

Hang in there on your daily carbs. One of my biggest problems is just letting it all go if I have one bad meal or snack. I tend to use it as a license to blow it the rest of the day :(

I feel for your Dad... when I was at my worst 10+ years go, I was afraid to eat anywhere other than at home. Wasn't unusal to spend 30 minutes or more in the restroom at a resturant. :(

Not sure if it's the Lindt or not, but that is a daily thing (2 squares of 90%) for a reason... I've found that (usually) if I have some every day it keeps the carb/chocolate cravings at bay so I don't go head-first into something I shouldn't. I'm back to taking my meds like I'm supposed to so will see how that goes. Lindt has only been added in the past few years too.

One common demoninator though between now and 10+ years ago is exercise. I joined a gym March 2001 and in July had to have the stricture procedure. Started exercising harder last week, and my first bad episode happened shortly after a 1 hour hike in the woods.

I have read that there might be a connecting between asthma meds (the bronchodilators) and GERD issues. Something, if I recall, about the meds that relax the muscles around the lungs to allow them to dilate also causes that "flap" that seperates the stomach from the esphoagus (sp) to relax and let the acid back up. And yet my doc tells me I have to stay on the GERD meds because the excess acid can make my asthma worse. Go figure. But anyways my point in bringing that up is that with the increased exercise I'm using my "rescue" inhaler more (before exercise as a preventive) and I had to use it toward the end of the walk as well. So might be a connection. Will see how I do back on my meds full time.

And hey, do I REALLY have to stay up till 10 pm helping my kids when they're older? I thought when they hit kindergarten I just had to make lunches and buy them school clothes, and put my feet up after the toddler years. ;)

Congrats on the scale moving in the right direction. And if it's down day 1 for period that's even better. Don't most women tend to be at their heaviest then (having had a hysterectomy Jan 2001 I don't recall)

Thankfully I don't have to help with the homework (not like I could given what she's taking), but doing my walk without my partner is not fun (not to mention I don't like going out alone in case my asthma kicks in).

Yay! Sounds like you're finding what works for you, Becca. Sometimes it can be like a science experiment.

Yep, will have to see if it keeps up.!

I did get a bit hungry this afternoon when I got home. Couldn't have my usual tuna as DH had not made me any more mayo (have I mentioned I'm not good in the kitchen). Did have my normal 1/4 cup almonds and 2 squares Lindt... but I was hearing the cookie dough in the freezer... I did NOT cave, but I did have more almonds/Lindt and then DD2 and I nagged him for an early (well earlier than he wanted to cook) dinner.

So today's meals:

Boiled eggs w/ butter, salt, pepper; bacon

Turkey/roast beef, cheese, mayo, salt and pepper on 2 leaves of romaine (eaten like a sandwich); apple slices; baby carrots

Almonds and Lindt x2

scrambled eggs, sausage and coconut pancakes. Am stuffed too (and gave DH some of my eggs and sausage) as the pancakes were far more filling than I had expected (also very very high in calories and fat)

Made up for not eating much yesterday that's for sure!

Protein: 125.1
ECCs: 34.4
Water: 112
Supplements: full round this morning and extra potassium and magnesium at lunch (headache from gasoline smells at work :( )
Exercise: not today, raining and homework

I'm feeling rather long-winded lately too... sorry!

And you can write as much as you want! I'm interested. :)

I made vegetable soup again today. Everything was low carb except I threw in a handful of barley to please the Geezer. The little bit I get in a bowl is impossible to measure, but probably not even a tablespoonful. I'm taking time off from Fitday right now, so I'm not going to obsess over it. ;)

I added a few blue potatoes to my evening, but otherwise on food plan.

Carol, I throw the ball in the am to wear them down a bit before my partner takes them for their morning walk. I have to be to work by 7:30 and she doesn't go in until 9.

Then I'm home around 4 and I throw the ball a LOT more (like for a good hour), and she gets home at 6. We eat, then we each take a dog and walk them. I take the bigger stronger dog and work on leash training (she is a sniffer and a puller...ugh).
So I do walk one of them, but my partner does the most.

Becca, interesting issue, the connection between GERD and asthma. I'm going to look into that since I have both as well....

Today is my final work day with the dogs. They work at 3:30 and were barking and whining. I got up to see what was wrong and couldn't figure it out? I let them out and then of course they wanted breakfast. Instead I put them back in their kennels and told them it wasn't morning yet!! We all went back to sleep for 2hrs but I could have used a couple more.

Tonight we're having friends over for a bonfire then tomorrow I think I'm going to play pool with some friends in the morning, then play with the dogs all afternoon. Sunday, if it's nice, we're going with a friend in her boat on the Mississippi river! Weeee!
OH, Sunday the dogs go home...I think I'm ready to have my time back.

Scale's up a tad today, but yeah, it's TOM, so who knows. Still trying to be strictly on-plan and hoping to see some results, especially before I start that new med that makes me gain. :jawDrop: Pretty anxious about that, really. I know that weight gain on a med like that tends to plateau eventually but given my weight history, knowingly going on something that causes weight gain is scary. OTOH, I have to do what's best for my disease and will allow me to be a good mom who isn't in too much pain or too tired to take care of my kids. And as DH points out, maybe if I'm feeling much better I will have more energy to exercise, which will help mitigate the weight issue! :)

Good food plans today, yummy chicken for supper and some egg salad for lunch. Made some more breakfast bars yesterday, so I have more snack options. Only potential mine-field is an event we're going to tonight; but most of it is hors d'oeuvres for an hour or so and then we'll just be sitting in a concert.

Good Morning All:

Scale was at 210 this morning but it's 1st day of TOM plus I'm coming off a binge a few days ago so I think that's pretty "good". I still feel like I'm getting more toned (although my arms/biceps/triceps look mighty flabby).

Yesterdays count: 59 carbs, 1907 calories, 121 protein. I also got some activity in and took all supplements.

Todays Plan
b: shake with 2 oz cream and cheese stick
l: shake with 3 scoops mix and 4 oz cream
d: chicken tenderloins and broccoli with melted cheese
s: slim jim (and I ate a handful of chex mix that DD5 was munching on):o

Since it's raining it's highly unlikely that I'll get in any activity today.

That's very interesting about the bronchodilators & GERD. My father and I both have asthma and reflux, go figure. I never would've realized there was a connection. Good luck with the meds and I like long-windedness in a support group, that's the whole point :) (I know I've been long-winded before as well.)

Quiet around here today :) Course I guess there's only 5 of us really active, so not too surprising.

Had a meeting at school this morning w/ the guidance counsellor, mandatory for all seniors. DD2 is ranked #3 in her class right now (was #2 the past two years), but I know it's very very close, probably a difference of .001 in GPA or something. She's on track to graduate (of course) and got info on scholarships and all that. She's nearly completed most of her college applications already too.

Trying to get out the door for that had us running late so I had a shake this morning, first one in a while. I did add approx 2 Tablespoons coconute oil to it (along with protein powder and cream).

Work was insane and the food I took to nibble on (speficially my turkey) caused another one of my "episodes". Once I was over that opted to only eat the cheese (which never seems to cause problems) and carefully ate my carrots. I actually did ok hunger-wise too.

Not a lot of options when I got home (apples, yogurt and chocolate all finished up, need to go to the store) so had some walnuts and that was it.

Sun was finally back out today too after a week in hiding so DD2 and I went for a walk. Decided to go a different route (around the "long" block) that includes some hills (quads not happy uphill and hamstrings and gluts not happy downhill)... but even after all that only added about 5 minutes to our time, I expected it to be longer. Oh well

Dinner we went out, first time in over 2 weeks (which was for my b-day), some kind of record for us! I had a ceasar salad (no croutons), baked sweet potato (w/ butter and cinnamon) and an 8oz sirloin with water. Was very very yummy.

I used Fitday's generic ceasar salad which I know includes croutons so my carbs (and to some extent protein) counts aren't fully accurate. The place we ate won't post their nutrition info online so that's the best I could do.

Protein: 134.5
ECCs: 44
Water: 136
Supplements: nope, running too late
Exercise: walked

Planning on going in to work tomorrow. I'm constantly behind and I have to fill in for someone else on Monday so that's pretty much a day lost on my stuff. DD2 going with me so we can go straight from there to the state forest to walk again.

I can get choked up on dry meat sometimes, too.

Went with the Geezer to a garage sale this morning and ended up with another guitar. sigh. I no sooner get the closet in reasonable order than he finds another one. He doesn't play them, mind you.

It's an absolutely beautiful fall day! The colors are coming on and it's jacket weather. Too bad I've got obligations for the rest of the day and into the evening.

Time to make lunch! Dinner will be wedding food with no chance to eat before I get there. I'll have nuts in my purse in case there aren't many choices.

Hi, y'all,
Sorry to MIA, but busy week.
On plan, but school every night.

Carol, wish you could send me some of the fall weather. The last few days have been in the 60-70's at night, high of 80's untill this weekend, when we are at 96 for the high! Ugh!
Tracy, way to go, no naughty nibbles.
Becca, is the state forrest great to walk in? I love walking in the state park near me.
Trina, hang in there.
Ammy, great to "see" you again. Dog sitting can be exhausting.

Went to a woman's retreat from my church last night and this morning.
Lots of great food, I stayed on track with my low carb.
DIL baked pumpkin cupcakes with pumpkins on top, I did sucumb to one small one, but will be on track the rest of the day.

Today, the scale was great to me. Down 3lbs to a new set of numbers!
I am sooo excited. :D

Menu:
B: bacon, eggs, sausage, tea.
L: taco salad sans the shell, salsa, one of my DIL's cupcakes
S: cheese, few tiny dill pickles
D: steak, chef salad, purple cauliflower

Have a great Saturday, all.

Happy Saturday ladies!

Started the day with hard boiled eggs and bacon.

Went in to work for a few hours (took some cheese and carrots to nibble on)

Was POURING rain when we left there, nearly couldn't see to drive, but by the time we got closer to our side of town and the state forest it was sunny again (just wet ground). They had signs up about the trails being closed due to wetness, but we went anyways ;) 30 minutes .7 mile. Was extremely humid, had to sit for a bit (it was an educational trail with "classrooms" with benches - also fun to walk around on benches :D) and use my inhaler, but I think it had more to do with weather than the walking by itself.

Stopped at the store on the way home intending to get a rotissarie (sp) chicken for us to eat for lunch, checked the ingredients and nixed that idea. You'd think something cooked right there in the store would be fairly basic, but no :( So got her some roast beef (only ever get Boar's Head stuff) and found some flaxmeal (and also some unsweetened coconut which I don't currently need but now know where to go and look) and a few other things to hold til bigger trip tomorrow (and found DH some sweetened tea w/out HFCS!).

Came home and had leftover porkchop for lunch.

Working on laundry and other things around the house (including catchup on TV shows DVR'd during the week) then prepped for dinner (so DH can cook). Having steamed broc florets and a new recipe Chicken w/ Almond Coconut sauce (Primal Blueprint 30minute cookbook).

Football tonight too so may not get here til tomorrow to post numbers!

Am exhausted, but in a good way if that makes sense.

Well the new recipe was a bit of a hit/miss mix. The seasoning on the chicken was good (and easy enough that I can do it myself) but the almond coconut sauce didn't go over well (and unfortunately the taste hung around most of the night). At least we tried something new, and will probably keep the chicken part w/out sauce on the rotation.

Numbers for today:

Protein 132.4
ECCs 21.7 (probably a smidge higher as I didn't include the bit of sauce I did try at dinner)
Water: 144
Supplements nope, forgot
Exercise 30 minute hike in the forest

exhausted, sore, heading to bed

Back from vacation and somehow still near my low. I didn't carb it up but I changed my routine and overall took in more calories for the week. Yesterday I was +3.9 and today I'm +3.2 so already heading in the right direction.

My wife and I read Wheat Belly on the drive. It's a great book filled with lots of interesting new information. I'd previously mentioned I would be taking notes to post for everyone. I'm still going to post them when I get them typed up (I have a ton of different things flagged and those were just the things that *I* found interesting, you'll probably find plenty more if you read it).

I'll probably make the post in one of the other forums so it doesn't get lost in a challenge thread but I'll drop the link in here for anyone that's interested.

I hadn't planned to read it because I don't eat grains anyway, but it might be some good background knowledge.

I went to a party last night and found roast pork with minimal sauce, mixed vegs and salad, so I made out all right. I added a glass of wine, too. The dessert looked really good, but I realize now that I look at it as the "tip of the iceberg", which makes it easy to decline. A "sweet treat" is NOT worth the trouble that will follow!

Had an interesting conversation with my cousin, who has been on Atkins but has decided to go vegan after seeing the CNN special. She said it was odd to start eating bread again but so far she and her husband were both doing well. I noticed he rolled his eyes a time or two and shot me a glance. I think he may not be into it as much as former president Clinton! :p

Evening all... extremely tired tonight (and so early). Scale was not my friend this morning either... yesterday I had lost 2 pounds for the week, gained all that back in 24 hours. Trying not to obsess, I know it can flucuate, but still annoying.

Today's food:

boiled eggs, butter, salt, pepper, bacon
Tuna, homemade mayo, salt, pepper, apple slices
4oz burger patty w/ 1 slice cheese, bit of non-hfcs ketchup and mustard, green beans.

Kinda so so on the water today for some reason (wonder if that's why I'm tired??)

Totals:

Protein: 100.2
ECCs: 13.9 (wow!)
Water: 80 + a few unmeasured sips (maybe another 8oz total)
Supplements: not done today
Exercise: nothing offical, did some "dancing" while doing some housework and walked all around the grocery store ;)

I hope you get some moderate weather soon and that it lasts until Christmas. ;) We've lost our heat for the year, I think. It's been raining here for two weeks. Earlier this morning the sun came out, but now it's as dark as dusk again.

The dogs are gone...and after a couple hours cleaning the house, I am finally resting comfortable in a VERY quiet house!
It's LOVELY!!Ah! Enjoy it, Amy!

I made a lc lasagna for lunches next week, and will add some plain lettuce or caesar salad (no croutons).
I boiled eggs and wil lhave 3egg and 3 turkey sausages and a small apple for breakfast. I will have shakes for supper.
I'm glad to have my meals planned for the week.It removes that nagging need to constantly make meal decisions, doesn't it? Good for you. :)

Scale was up today. Considerably. Grrr. :( I did not NEAN yesterday, but I didn't do badly, just a tiny slice of some coffee cake at church, and a taste of DH's triffle dessert at a friend's house. I hate it when the scale jumps on me for no apparent reason.

Today has been fine, yogurt/protein powder breakfast, egg salad and cantaloupe for lunch, snack of nuts, and hamburger patty for supper.

Quick pop in to post my numbers before I go watch DWTS (love having a DVR)... think my carbs may be a bit overstated as the squash thing we had for dinner didn't turn out like the picture. Recipe called for 1/2 of a butternut squash, which I did use, but am thinking it was a smaller squash than was intended and it didn't give any sort of "cups" to go by. Mixture was supposed to be thick and creamy, more like a porridge, ours was like soup (and very thin soup at that).

Protein: 113.5
ECCs: 50
Water: 128
Supplements done

off to the TV!

Finally stepped on the scale today...and NO I don't want to talk about it.:(

And I just heard one of the two dogs may be coming back to stay with us another week. Not sure how I feel about it....
Especially since the cats are still not letting me sleep through the night.

I think I have a better understanding of what it's like to have a newborn that wakes you often through the night...sleep deprived, crabby, low on energy, etc.
sigh.

meals are the same as yesterday.

Do you usually find that? I'd be more inclined to look towards salty or hormonal (and therefore uncontrollable) culprits.

sigh. That's pretty close, Amy. I used to close the door on the cat, but the baby required me to get out of bed and actually wake up! Results are the same, though. :p

Doing well today... posting quick so I can go watch DWTS.

Carbs probably just a hair (small hair) overstated as the chicken dish we had for dinner didn't inclue fiber in the nutrition info and I'm too lazy to work it all out myself (was chicken, several colors of bell peppers, chili pepper, garlic, rosemary, salt, pepper, olive oil - know there's a bit of fiber in there somewhere ;) )

Protein: 102.7
ECCs: 31.9
Water: 112
Supplements: nope :( crazy morning
Exericse: yes - pushups, squats, etc... done today

Wow, so quiet here for the past couple of days! Sorry I haven't been reporting in; I was hit by a cold and just not online much. The cold is still going full-force. Fall is here! :jawDrop:

Eating's been going fine this week. I have a hard time believing that my couple of bites of dessert caused such a gain either, Carol. Maybe it's the cold. I don't know, does your body retain fluid when you're sick? Oh well. At least I'm on-plan.

Okay, scale was MUCH better today. Yesterday must have been a big fluid-filled day.
Whew.

Went out to eat last night. Had my deep fried cheese curds (carbs), but with it I had chix wings (no carbs), so overall it wasn't bad.
Then I spent 2hrs making apple crisps to use up a bunch of apples I got from a neighbor.
Took a big one to work and it was gone in 4 minutes.
I love to bake and appreciate working with a bunch of hungry guys.

AND...I dont' have that sitting around my house, cause I like apple crisp, but when I eat that sugar, I get nauseus and feel terrible. So bing bang it's all gone!

Going to my sisters this weekend. She's the weight watcher. That means there will be lots of veggies, but everything EVERYTHING will be no fat (meaning more carbs). Pale boneless skinless everything and if we have a dressing or mayo, it's all 100% fat free. I have to fight to get some fat in while I'm there.
But it's better than a sugar-coated bread-fest!! :D

It's impossible to be exact, because even the nutrition sites vary on counts! We just need to be "close enough" and be able to spot a slide starting. :paranoid:

Had a visit from the Whoosh fairy last night I guess. down 3 pounds from yesterday! :D Hope it sticks.

Work out for the day is done.

Pork chops in the crock pot for dinner (and turned on).

Waiting on DD2 to do her workout so we can have breakfast (I'm starving!).

Went to bed early last night as I was super tired (then had trouble falling asleep, go figure ) so didn't get here to post my numbers

Protein : 123.2
ECCs: 31.7
Water: 112
Supplements: done
Exercise: nothing done :( Actually starting to miss the afternoon walks

Planning on a picnic for Saturday and some walking in the forest. She's taking the SAT so will have to be after that (and would like to be home for football game at 3:30) so perfect for lunch time. Just trying to figure out what to take.

Now off to some bacon and eggs :)

Hi Everyone.

I haven't been doing well on lc so I signed up for weight watchers. I'm just under entirely too much stress and weight watchers gives a few visual tools so I'm going to try it for a month. Don't worry though, I know for a fact that if I overdo carbs my allergies torture me, the reflux gets unbearable and I get very gassy (to put it delicately I don't want my husband following me around with the air purifier).

I'll continue to check in here periodically.

Well I'm sure you won't miss me too much because I'm still using pp principles. (plus I'm attached to you all :-) )

I've learned about the new ww plan and since vegetables are free I'm just adding a little butter to them and then having my meat cooked in oil. For instance this morning I had coffee with cream & splenda and bacon, lunch: chicken breast with onions & peppers and butternut squash. Haven't really decided on dinner yet (but I had m&m's this morning at 1 am when DD5 woke up crying/choking/gaging, yeah I'm not handling stress well). I felt a little "acidy" last night so whatever I have for dinner I'll skip the rice & pasta as a side for sure.

Going for a walk later. Have a great day everyone :-)

It just gives you another negative feeling to cope with. That's the most practical advice I can leave you with, Trina.

Keep in touch! :)

No ideas for October, sorry Carol.

I had a killer headache again yesterday, started at work, just would not go away. Ate my lunch outside to take a break from the desk, even that didn't help.

And when I got home I was in the mood to eat anything and everything. That cookie dough was calling to me (but I didn't have it). One of those days where I wished I had PB in the house. Tried almond butter, didn't help. Ended up eating an entire bar of Lindt :( (still better than the cookie dough though).

Wasn't up to the planned dinner so DH scrambled some eggs and fried up some sausage patties. Had to get out of bed to eat, then went right back to bed.

Over the past couple of days have gained back some of the 3 pounds I had dropped, but still down 2 pounds overall for the week (Sat - Sat). Was looking at my spreadsheet just now, have lost 10 pounds since 9/10 at the beginning of the MDA 30 day thing. So I'll take it! 1.5 inches off waist and hips (so doesn't improve the ratio but still inches gone) and bits off my thighs, arms and chest too.

Yesterday's numbers:

Protein 159.2
ECCs 46.5

Headache is still hanging on this morning too, just not quite as bad as yesterday. Still hoping to go for the picnic with DD2 (though no clue what food to take) and a hike, but maybe only about 30 minutes worth, will see how I feel.

Not much we can do about ratio, according to the experts, but they improve on their own in time. Resistance exercise is the best thing I've found. I also think it's a good idea to keep a spreadsheet (or some kind of record) because memory is often unreliable.

Headache eased up a bit after some breakfast (bacon and egg)... still lingering a bit though.

I got outside and swept/raked the driveway, filled up an entire lawn/leaf bag of pinestraw/leaves/cones/sticks. Also moved a lot of fallen branches from the yard to the curb for pickup this week.

I've been doing my 2 days/week of the pushups/squats/etc... for the past few weeks. Haven't had much success with the walking on a regular basis after the first week as weather and homework interfered. But plodding along anyway.

I like my spreadsheets. Actually have several different ones that I've used over the years, seems I start a new one each time I try something "new".

Now off to see what our challenge is for October :)
