View Full Version : 3 days til the scales register?

I've seen this quoted so many places but so far no one has been able to show a STUDY or any PROOF of its veracity, so thought I'd ask here!
Is it true that it takes 3 days for what you eat today to show up on the scales? I.e., if I eat cake today (Saturday) it won't "register" until Tuesday?
I'd really love to see a link to a study that proves this, or disproves it because frankly I consider it another old wives' tale!

Temptd2--not to in any way dismiss your question, but old wives' tale or not, why would this matter?
A scale is only a snapshot of your bodyweight at the moment of weighing. MANY things affect that number, from balance calibration to the amount of water you've recently consumed/eliminated, how much sodium you've eaten that day, the type of flooring on which your scale rests (seriously...try moving your scale between wooden, cement, linoleum, and ceramic tile floors to see where you find variations!)
So, unless you go to public scheduled weigh-ins where you care what the scale says because a bajillion people are looking at the number, does it really matter when what you eat shows up on the display (or doesn't)? If you eat a piece of cake today, you've still challenged your system with carbs it may or may not be able to handle...no matter what any scale says today, tomorrow or next Tuesday. And in the context of improving your health, it's the challenge you've given to your system that's the hard news--not whatever numbers show up on that scale display.

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me one little bit, the only reason I ask is that it's being held up as a universal truth on another board I frequent and no one seems able to provide any concrete evidence that it is TRUE or even STUDIED.
I'd like to discredit the myth if possible but can't find anything one way or the other with my internet searching.
So, thought I'd bring the question HERE because most people on THIS board seem very level-headed and think about what they are posting instead of just mouthing cliches. ;)
THAT is why! :)

Ah, well in THAT case...;)
Sometimes it's just easier to remember (and repeat as needed) "there's one born every minute...there's one born every minute...there's one born every minute..."
Or you could try checking out the information on urban legends; they might have something. Good luck with your quest. ;)
