Kap, check with the nurse. I've never heard of anything like that associated with a low carb diet.
If you're in very early pregnancy, milk glands will have stabbing pains. I don't have any other ideas!
Keep us posted, please.
Hi,
I will check with the nurse with these sharp pains- Im def NOT pregnant! haha but i can understand what you say re pains in breasts-
hahaha im def not pregnant! I will keep you updated. I read somwhere about pains in the legs but i cant remember where! this was after i eaten ALOT of clotted cream. I am on the end of the 6wc so i am going to keep check of my food intake and see what the results are of eating them. Maybe i can eat clotted cream? maybe it gives me pain in the legs? I dont know but im def going to keep a diary of it.
thanks - I will let you know what the nurse says although im EXPECTING her to say 'oh dear all that saturated fat, you can not eat like this' 'its so bad for you', if so then i will ask sorry TELL her to get blood tests done.

... although im EXPECTING her to say ...
If you are NOT pregnant you probably shouldn't be EXPECTING either... :p!
If your symptoms persist I would check with a doctor. It is highly unlikely your pain is low carb related ... and clotted cream is good for you ... AND the (not) baby!;)
HAHAHAHAHA I dont think its low carb related but i have never had this before.
I will keep you informed!:)
P.S
clotted cream is the most delicious thing, my normal supermarket did not have it on saturday so i travelled and sought my clotted cream, i just had to have it! Kids think im mad.

If you are urinating a lot due to the low carb diet, you might be deficient in potassium or magnesium. When you start a low carb diet, it often has a diuretic effect, and you lose more potassium. Most of us take supplements of both.
Both can cause leg pains; "restless legs" at night, cramping, sharp muscle pains, etc. I don't know how things are labeled in the UK, but the US guidelines state that you need up to 400mg of magnesium per day from food and other sources. You can go over those amounts, so I supplement with 400mg of magnesium daily.
For potassium, I now use a salt substitute (Morton's Lite Salt here in the US) that has potassium chloride in it. It provides enough potassium for me to avoid the leg cramps.
Frank,
I take my multivitamins,400 potassium, 250 magnesium each night. I have recently put my magnesium up to 500 (as i only have the 250 mg at present).
I will say i was urinating alot at the beginning of 6wc (weeks1,2,3 and 4) not so much now as i dont (shamefully) drink as much water as i should. I NEED to drink more water.
I didnt think i would get the leg pains but as you can see from my first posting i am still learning about my body. This 6wc has certainly made me look, learn and experience so many changes that are effecting my body, its amazing how much you DONT know about your body. Quite ignorant really!!

It really does focus your attention on how your body responds to food, doesn't it? There are a lot of stories from people about how they transition into a low carb diet with a collection of symptoms including rashes, pains, headaches, muscle aches, cramps, etc., yet for most of us the beneficial aspects of the diet outweigh those complaints. I've read a few explanations of it, from poisons trapped in the fat cells being released to the body's response to changing over from using carbs to using ketones for food, but nothing that I can say really is definitive.
I do know that it seems to subside for most people fairly soon. Since I'm well past that stage, none of it seems that bad to me in retrospect (but I was very concerned about it at the time I was going through it). It does serve to keep me "on the wagon" as I know the road back after resuming my old lifestyle is probably through the same minefield of weird symptoms.
Hi All,
My painfull breasts were due to TOM!, i am very shocked because i was only on the TOM 2 weeks ago. Once again i have learnt that my body is changing, recomposing and reacting to this new WOE. Maybe i am having a 'good clearout'? (i am sorry if i am being too direct) My leg pains have gone and my mood has improved. Thankyou everyone for the input, all this learning is GOOD
:) :) :)

Mine got shorter as well. It had settled to five weeks for nearly two years after my son was born, and then two weeks on PPLP and it was back to 29/31 days. Been that for three months now. I figure it's a good sign, to be honest....

Glad you have got to the bottom of your problem, even if it was a bit of a shock! (The peeing at the beginning of LC eating is not just because of drinking lots of water, and it does tail off somewhat. A lot of water is released as stored glucose is used up. IIRC 3 molecules of water are stored with every one of glucose.)
Eleanor-good news to you! hopefully mine will sort itself out too!
Carol- so WAY better then being preggers especially as my son is of age now that he can be a daddy!
Needlewoman- that is a great piece of information- i didnt know that!, made all that running upstairs to the toilet last night more worthwhile! as im drinking more water.

I had some pretty serious leg cramps in the first few months of PP eating and weight loss. Potassium and magnesium didn't help (although I still consume plenty of both).
In my case, the problem was not enough sodium. That's right--not enough Killer Salt.
If you are losing weight rapidly you will be dumping water; and high protein tends to dehydrate. In this process, you will also be losing sodium. If you engage in sweaty exercise on top of this, and also, as invariably recommended, drink a lot of water, it's surprisingly easy to deplete your sodium stores.
Mine got so low I actually had convulsions one night.
Sports medicine doctors say that although most people associate cramps with low potassium, most of the cases they see involve low sodium. Sodium is lost in copious amounts in perspiration, while the potassium and magnesium content of sweat is vanishingly small.
Just something to think about. The big crusade against salt is about as well-founded as the crusade against cholesterol.

Just a quickie to say that I went back to my "gallon-a-day" fluid consumption that I had let slip. I believe there is some correlation with the leg cramps. It's been a few weeks and I'm getting better sleep overall. :) I sure hope that's the cure!
Hi,
This is so TRUE...A little story:)
I attended a wedding reception and afterwards my toe cramps came back with such force that i was rolling about the floor LOL ( it was not funny at the time!) This lasted about 2 days. The only thing i could think of was the alcohol consumption that i had at the wedding. I have not had any alcohol for months. Did this dehydrate me? did this cause me to have these cramps? I BELIEVE SO! also i did not take my supplements that evening? mmmm worth thinking about.
Anyway im back to drinking lots of water again, and no cramps.
S Bear-Intresting, thanks
Sorry,

Sorry,
Carol- this story relates to your post about drinking lots of water-SO TRUERight! The sad part is that it took me so long to discover the connection! Mine always come in the middle of the night, so it's nice to get better sleep, too.
Hi All,
OH MY GOODNESS! I was woken this morning with both legs going into cramp mode, i had to jump up out of bed to get rid of the cramp, looking back it was a very funny sight but oh dear the pain! I have not taken pottasium for 2 nights now and i think this is why i have got the cramps in my legs. :(
Also let me add (sorry i forgot) i have not being drinking enough water the last few days- back at work, parents visiting and out most days! mmmm-that maybe the answer

Kap, I really hate jumping out of bed! My sympathies! ;)
I'm convinced the extra water helped me.
Of course, that has me rising from my sleep to find the bathroom at 3 a.m.!
