Not sure how much difference there is between places that test. Normally I get this done by my doc but this time I got the numbers when I signed up for life insurance.
July 2007 - 3 months into PP
Total: 201
HDL: 29
LDL: 146
Triglycerides: 132
HDLtoTrig: 0.220
April 2008 - 1 year into PP
Total: 199
HDL: 31
LDL: 152
Triglycerides: 81
HDLtoTrig: 0.383
September 2009 - 1 year 5 months into PP
Total: 248
HDL: 46
LDL: 175
Triglycerides: 134
HDLtoTrig: 0.343
The only major difference I can think of is that I've been taking cod liver oil in hopes of upping my HDL. HDL did make a nice improvement, mildly annoyed with the other numbers though HDL:Trig wasn't as affected since HDL and LDL both went up.
Thoughts?

I believe Vitamin D alone will do a better job of upping your HDL levels than cod liver oil. For me, I started taking 5000 - 10,000 IU and in a month, my HDL went from 49 to 61. William Davis on the Heart Scan blog talks about this phenomena as well.

November 2011
Total: 250
HDL: 44
LDL: 191
Triglycerides: 77
HDLtoTrig: 0.571
TritoHDL: 1.75*
*(I believe I've been calculating this backwards. I just knew Dr. Mike always wanted as close to 1:1 on the ratio but Dr. Davis of Wheat Belly was talking about what the various ranges mean and he put the Tri on top).
Doc ignored the Tris and HDL and focused on Total & LDL which I don't actually care about.

Hi Spruce Goose,
My doc doesn't care about ttl, but does care about LDL and HDL and so do I. Your HDL is going up and that's good, but so is your LDL and that's bad. You can reduce your LDL by taking in 1 cup of oat bran or use ProFibe. I use ProFibe now because it's 100% water soluble and a lot easier on the old colon (read less rough). The water soluable fibre is more important at reducing soft plaque than non-soluable fiber.
If you take 3 small scoops of ProFibe a day and reduce your saturated fat below 20 grams... or lower if you can, then after 6 weeks you should see a dramatic decrease in LDL and if you add some more brisk walking in you can increase your HDL, but if you don't do anything else except add ProFibe or oat bran your HDL will not decrease.
The best book I have ever read on this subject is a book on cholesterol by Robert Kowalski. I don't want to mention it by name, but you will find it on Amazon and after reading it you will understand. It was requriered reading by my doc... and he's a good one. He wanted me to understand and make the dietary changes myself before prescribing medicine... what a concept!

Spruce - I'd ask for a VAP test (Atherotech’s Vertical Auto Profile) so you can see how your lipids break down. Get the VLDL-C, Lp(A), apoB100 numbers and also your LDL Profile. If the profile is Type A - all fluffy & buoyant - and the other remnants are looking good then that lumped/merged LDL number might not be a concern.
