in the past year i had an incidence where my bs (and blood pressure) was slightly high. i dieted, lost 1/2 a stone, and in a month they both went down. altho i went back to my old ways and the weight returned the readings have been fine.
2 months or so ago, they were up again. i started PP, within a month they were down.
today i tested again and tho i have lost 13lbs, the blood pressure is a little higher (tho normal range) and the blood sugar is 6.8 m.mol/L (fasting)
i'm really shocked!!

An isolated fasting number doesn't tell you a lot so don't panic just yet. Take a few more fasting, and also track your BS during the day - at least pre each meal and 2 hours after. Keep a record of your food (and carbs) over the same time. There are a variety of reasons why your fasting number might be higher than at other (non food related) times - and there are ways to deal with that .. if necessary, but get some more information first, Ok?

thank you Malcolm. but i don't have a tester and i go to the doctor for the test.
i really haven't a clue how blood sugar/insulin etc works so i will have to do some reading. i've also started a food log to be extra sure.

Does your test include your A1c ("long term" blood sugar)? My fasting number hasn't changed much at all, but my A1c has shown improvement so my doctor is pleased. I'm still at 103 - 105 on my testing through the lab.
My doctor said you can "spoof" the fasting blood sugar by exercising a lot the day before. The hidden message to his patient who hates exercising is that exercise can help lower blood sugar (a fact he mentions more overtly every time I see him). I don't know if that's borne out by the science ... the exercise / blood sugar link ... but if it is, I may actually have to start exercising.

Nougat, if you're diabetic or pre-diabetic, you will find a glucometer invaluable to see how your numbers are affected by everything in life. Food intake is only one aspect. Stress is definitely a factor. Medications, sleep quality, exercise, hormones, all play a part.
Read Protein Power again. Dr. Mike explains how insulin works in the chapter titled "The Insulin Connection". One website with a lot of information is www.bloodsugar101.com.
Don't panic at one high reading, but do take it as a sign that something might be going on. :) A food log is a good start.

Of course you have to have low insulin resistance or else the sugar burn is quite blunted.
Teresa Tapp has a 3-minute exercise, (hoe downs), that was measured to lower blood sugar 60-80 points in diabetics. It involves practically all the muscles of the body at an intensity high enough to burn sugar. (we burn mostly fat at rest and low intensity)

Nougat, strangely enough I agree with Carol ... no hold on ... she agrees with me!:p (ahh that's better!:slywink:)
Get yourself a meter - they don't cost a lot. If you are one of those who is prone to the "dawn phenomenon" - ie higher fasting numbers than at other times of the day (and you don't have to be a diabetic for this) then not eating till after seeing your doctor will likely make the test result worse than it really is. Much better if you do some testing at home so that you can see what is really going on.

I agree with you too, even though I'm an unreasonable creature (as Shadow will soon prolly be calling me :D).

... Carol ... agrees with me!:p
There seems to be an outbreak of reasonableness (not to mention selective quoting) around here. Something should be done about it!!

I can't think of a time when I've disagreed with you, Malcom. I'm a very agreeable person most of the time. :) I'll let your selected quote stand.
