Dr. Mike Eades has a post on his blog regarding his recent trip to Disneyland (http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/weight-loss/disney-small-world-ride-a-casualty-of-the-obesity-epidemic/) that is pretty funny (I love the place, but he loathes it ... he worked there as a college student).

Among the observations are that the Its a Small World boats are rumored to have been increased in size due to the increasing size of the park's customers, and he noted an astounding number of overweight people in the park (both customers and park employees). Near the end, he laments the limited food choices:

Disneyland is carb heaven. That’s just about all you can find. There are sweetened cold drinks, a variety of ice cream products, cotton candy, gummy sweets, funnel cakes and other high-carb junk of every stripe. It is almost impossible to avoid carbs there. It can be done, but it is difficult and requires a lot of effort. The vast majority of the people I saw weren’t making the effort.

I actually have a strategy for Disneyland, but found myself not eating at a recent wedding I went to because the choices were so bad. How do you deal with the "family day" at a place like Disneyland, where the choices for low carb eating are very limited?

Have to bring your own food and drink. Lunch boxes and mega water! This goes even for my DD whose active son and husband have more carbs than she does. The food is so poor it guarantees kiddie meltdown and cranky DH.

(I agree with him on the song.)

The CDC just issued a report, so the media has it in its sights again. The problem is the CDC report has recommendations for "community based changes" to address the problem rather than looking at the dietary guidelines that have created the problem. More public parks, higher taxes on video games and soda, encouraging a diet "rich in complex carbs", etc.

I don't know how many people have told me that reducing fat is the key. A low fat diet can work; I got to goal weight with a strict low fat regimen, but could never budge my blood serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, or reduce my blood pressure. After all that work I only eliminated one of the four risk factors I had. It just wasn't worth it, and I gave up for more than a decade. Gained it all back and more. If my current doctor hadn't suggested LC as a way to reduce triglycerides I would have never known that it could solve all four of my risk factors.

BTW - I did find out those turkey legs at Disneyland ... that look like protein! ... have 1100 calories. They must be marinated in a sugar solution.

Don't watch televised news (except for PBS and Dan Rather on HDNet). They are only out to make you afraid.

In related news: Obesity programming is now a category unto itself.
To wit:

(Although I have a higher opinion of the Disneyland theme park than does Dr. Mike. :) )

I agree. I rode the ride when it first appeared at Disneyland, after being in the World's Fair in NY, and I was horrified. I don't think I was 10 years old yet, but it seemed hopelessly inane. It literally gave me nightmares, all those identical dolls singing and kicking in unison. It was creepy, like "Chuckie" combined with the "Stepford Wives" (I wonder if the people who created those two things have ever been on the ride ... hmmmm).

I went on it again after the refurbishment to larger boats last year, and survived about 3/4 of the way through. Then I got antsy and wanted to jump out of the boat and swim out of the building. I think I'll take my iPod if we take the grandkids again and crank up Jason Mraz, Erin McCarley or KT Tunstall to drown out the dolls.
