We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.
Aristotle
How long does it take to make PP a habit? How much work is it? What's the reward?
Breakfast: Mango/ginger shake
Lunch: Brahts
Dinner: Either roast beef or cauli/sausage casserole
Snack: Almonds, swiss cheese, Lindt 85%
Big state-of-the-district meeting today. Starting hallwalks today with a friend who also has arthritic knees. It will be slow, but will hopefully become another new habit! Looks like it snowed last night, so I'm planning to get an early start on the commute.
Have a great day!

Carol what a smile you bring as we start our days, always you bring out the best! I bet the faculty and students love being around you.
My day is going to start with an early morning breakfast meeting and end at home with some LC cheese cake! It will be a long day but focusing on the prize of good health is always worth the effort.
Breakfast will be Denver omelet with extra cheese, water and coffee
The rest of the day eating at this point is a bit nebulous as I have a three hour drive and the weather conditions are "iffy" at best.
As far as the words from Aristotle, it is so true excellence is a habit, in work, in play and in eating, you nailed it dear one!

How long does it take for something to become a habit???? Uhmmmm I believe it becomes a habit when it feels wrong not doing it!! when you get that feeling that something is missing or just wrong.
This is how I have been feeling the last week or so, I believe the whole plan is becoming a habit. I really find it more so with the exercise aspect of it all. It's becoming a habit to get up at 5:30 and to get at it!! It's a habit I don't mind having.
Breakfast will be a shake
lunch will be salad with chicken breast and tomatoe and cheese
dinner will be taco salad
snacks not sure yet, probably nothing
supps as soon as I get in the kitchen
water, I have been drinking min of 76 oz and I would like to up that today a bit.
Darn scale was up this am, I knew I was being to hasty redoing my ticker.

AMEN SISTA!!!!
When NOT doing "it" causes me stress...that's how I feel if I don't have my food planned. It has become such a wonderful COMFORTING habit that I DO NOT LIKE IT when I don't do it, and at this point it's not a "don't do", it's usually a "can't do" (like when I visit MIL). It's just more comfortable to preplan then not think about!
LOVE that this way - once doing it - is a habit and not an act I must perform! Yes yes yes!
Speaking of this woe...scale said 2000 again today (okay really it was 200.0)...I told GF and she said, "It's official, you're a TON of fun!!)
Food is planned. We are going out to a restaurant tonight and I'm having a STEAK!! MMmmmmmm It will really increase my protein (if I eat the entire thing) but I don't care! Mmmmmmm
8am caul-sausage casserole, 1lc toast
11am nacho's
2:30 iced latte
5:30 2 lite beers, 12oz steak, salad
Pro: 171.5 :eek::D
Ecc: 36.3 (this will increase with what is on my salad at the restaurant
Fat: 152.6
Cal: 2382

Hi, haven't done a single thing except breakfast and my coffee--ahh.
But, now I have to go get at it again so this will be short (did I hear Missy say AMEN):confused: (I really think I did.)
Carol, I want to get to the point that my daily exercise is a habit that I just can't resist. Seems like every time I am about to reach that point something happens and I have to lay off for a while--like my back or a trip out of town. I guess that is just an excuse --so erase what I just said. I'm going to do it this time.
I think Ammy and Jackie have it right--when it becomes something you are kind of stressed out about when you can't do it -- then it must be a habit. I want to be there--at that point with exercise and I'm going to get off here and do some Moving and Shaking so I can be another day towards that goal.

How long does it take to make PP a habit? How much work is it? What's the reward?
What finally made it a habit for me was looking at the woe as a way for me to be healthier. There is something more powerful about looking at a high carb/grain food and saying, "if I eat that, I am going to feel sick." Versus "if I eat that I'm going to be fat."
We are creatures that avoid pain and suffering at all costs. This way to look at it directly connects pain and suffering to eating the wrong foods, and often we see immediate results from "falling off the wagon." For me it is bloating, lack of energy, allergies almost immediately. And over the long term, digestive problems, yeast, sebborhea, acne, brittle nails, dry skin and excema, of course, weight gain.
Plan for today.. . Bfst is probably a lc quiche, then lunch more of the same. Dinner is a roast with cauliflower.

Amen, Carol, love the quote.
I remember reading somewhere it takes 21 days to change a habit.
One day at a time on the plan for me.
Today, last day of leave:(.
Will finish up the projects around the house, and of course, exercise.
Today:
B-omelet w/ low fat cheese, slice of LC whole wheat toast w/ <tsp butter, tea
S-almonds
L-cottage cheese, low fat w/ few green olives, tossed green salad w/ sf dressing
S-hood LC choc milk
D-meatloaf, cooked cabbage, green salad, sf pudding.
Hugs,
Claudette
I've had 20oz of water and 20oz of green tea (plus two cups of coffee).
REMINDER to all...drink drink drink....you know someone is following their low carb plan when they SLOSH!!!

How long does it take to make PP a habit?
forty - two
I'm told that's the Ultimate Answer, so I'm gonna stick with it.
What aspect of PP? And how ingrained does it have to be before it's a habit? And do you have to kill opposite habits before you can call PP a habit? So, can you have conflicting habits, the one that is new and the one that is working it's way out?
I'm a big picture guy, but I'm starting to think that there's more to do and less to think about. Rather than worry about how long it takes to make a habit, why don't I work today to actually make the habit. The thinking doesn't move me any closer. Maybe for others, not so much for me.
Day is planned, loosely.

chili today... its tasty on a cold day!
DH is still home sick.... the plus side is I slept (so did Lizzie) from 1am-9:30am. I woke up coughing more than I usually do but my mind feels clearer (does that make sense)? I am hoping i'm on the upside of this funk.... I haven't started exercising, just don't have the energy, but I don't want to lose my focus or motivation!
Good afternoon everyone just wanted to way in on the topic at hand. I tend to agree with Lisa here i worry more about what would happen if i went back to eating the way i used to eat. It probably wouldnt take about 2 weeks of that before i was back on the bp meds no thank you. Im really not sure if i would call it a habit for me its more of a mind set. Staying as healthy as i can be is the goal for me and this woe provides that for me. Well im off to the gym i hope everyone has a nice day.

I read that too. Every time I try to count, I'm not thinking about it by the time I get to 21. I'm either doing it already, or I've fallen off!

Max, you didn't let me down. You always provide an angle or an idea that I haven't considered. :) 1. Any aspect of PP! 2. See Jackie's definition. 3. Yes, on the conflicting habits, thus the struggle until one's been put to sleep. I would say death, but mine wake up from time to time.
I am hoping i'm on the upside of this funk.... I haven't started exercising, just don't have the energy, but I don't want to lose my focus or motivation!Feelix, I'm glad you are seeing some improvement. Save the exercise until you feel better. Sleep is good!
I tend to agree with Lisa here i worry more about what would happen if i went back to eating the way i used to eat. Yes, although I can "forget" the old miseries. It's helpful to be able to remember the feelings.

1. Any aspect of PP!
There are really 8 of doing it the full way. I imagine it takes a different amount of time to fully incorporate the eating than it does the water (I can get into the water habit in about 5 days) and the time to fully incorporate exercise may be longer or shorter. And it's likely different for different people. I know, when I get into the exercise, I fall into it pretty hard. I know others who just don't.
2. See Jackie's definition.
Very long time indeed until you feel weird not doing it. Think about how long it took to get any habit you have now. Brushing your teeth. Or flossing. Or drinking water. As I said, it takes me about 5 days to get into 2+L of water/day drinking. It doesn't feel weird if I skip it, and I did that for about a year. I think this is an overly high bar to reach for.
3. Yes, on the conflicting habits, thus the struggle until one's been put to sleep. I would say death, but mine wake up from time to time.
Life is struggle. That's what a billion people in Asia believe and they can't all be wrong, can they?

I've been using my new electric toothbrush for a month now and it still feels alien. However, a facilitator was telling me she planned stuffed shells and three kinds of lasagna for an upcoming function and my first thought was there isn't any way on God's green earth I would attend that dinner. It was actually a physical reaction. Luckily, I wasn't invited. :D

42 is a great answer!
It's a habit when you don't have to think about it anymore, you just do it. I guess the same could be said about breaking a bad habit, it's broken when you don't have to think about not doing it, you just don't do it.
For breakfast and lunch I had protein shakes made with plain yogurt and some homemade cranberry juice. I am taking an antibiotic, ran out of acidophilus, and felt that the yogurt would be a good thing until I can get to the store after work.
Supper is going to be pork steak, with green beans.

the first time I did PP it had become a habit, can't remember how long it had taken. It took just 2 days to break it, though.
my last two times, it had not become a habit yet, I'd have to check my log to see how many days. I'm likely to think it might be 42 completely clean days for me...
I'm working on finishing January with no honey tree days.
exercise - we're doing good. Despite the rain and bone penetrating cold - about 35, windchill in the 20s, we walked. And I did stairs again.
eating - on plan, but I felt like I was starving today. Checked out the PP book (second one with cheat sheet for requirements in it) and discovered my extra weight increase put me into the next highest requirement. Should be eating 34 per meal, and I know breakfast, my biggest meal, is falling closer to 27.
Will recalculate tonight!
It makes it too hard when you're hungry - although I have had few cravings ...
breakfast - 2 eggs, 1 slice ham, 2 slices bacon, coffee with cream
lunch - 4 slices ham, 1 large slice swiss, 1 mini pita
dinner - dh is cooking chicken, I think

Hi all, just wanted to account for my totals today. Protein: 97 carbs 37 fiber 7 ecc 30.
I did my water, supps and exercise so I'm good to go.
big food day today, but not as big as I thought (chose not to have a steak).
supper was a bowl of french onion soup, small caesar salad (left 1/2 the croutons), burger with just enough of the bun to get to eat the mayo...so maybe 1/8th of it?
Pro: 145.5
Ecc: 45
Fat: 148.6
Cal: 2216
I'm so tired I can't keep my head up, so good night all.

Late again.... starting to think the reason I can't seem to lose weight/stick to the program is the lack of sleep :(
Had a power outage here today due to LOTS of wind - my yard is now covered in sticks and branches! - so that put a monkey wrench into tonight's dinner (hard to cook w/out electricity). Ate out again, and I know I was "on plan" just hard to get exact numbers.
So best guess for today...
Protein: 120
Carbs: 48
Water: 96 (no power put a kink in that too!)
Off to bed with no clue what I'm going to take to work to eat tomorrow :( I'll find something I s'pose.
Sorry for not participating in the discussions lately, doing good to report my numbers at this point. Hopefully will get back into things soon.

Becca, I'm glad you're able to check in when you can. BTW, low sleep is one of my biggest bad habits and I've read that it can cause all kinds of problems. Maybe some day we can have a sleep challenge! ;)
That's where I'm going right now. Ciao!

Mmmm, sleep. Sounds good, it's where I'm headed shortly. Just checking in with totals. Wednesday is my busy day. Ate a huge 4 egg Joe's Special (that's what my dad calls it) omelette for breakfast/lunch. Had a protein bar for a snack. Then later tonight munched on some celery and hummus. The lower hunger thing is kicking in, and that always helps me stay on track and develop a good habit.
Totals: 75g protein, 20g ECC, 86g fat, 1231 cal.
Water: yes, Supps: yes Exercise: Lugging my 40 lb. daughter in from the car. Tomorrow I start with a strength training program. I am so excited to get moving! Good night and sweet dreams to all.
Just realized two things...
1. this was the last day of the first week and I hit my goals...YEA!!
2. It's Wednesday, and I had NO time for Wacky....darn it...
1/1/09 - 1/7/09
Protein (min 90g): 7 of 7
Ecc (max 45 ecc): 7 of 7
Water (min 64oz): 7 of 7
Exercise (3days wk): 4 of 3

So, the final count is looking something like:
Protein: 195g
Carbs: <30g
Water: 1.5 L
Bit by bit.
