Yesterday I attended a workshop all day on how to motivate and last night I attended our annual Women of Distinction event where Pat Summitt the winnest coach in all of basketball, men or womens, pro or college spoke. She was great, she left us with something to think about and it was Get your motors started, not to wait, to get it going and do it now. She was a fun speaker and certainly motivational.

During the day at the workshop we had many speakers, mostly on how to deal with adult learners. But some nice thoughts were shared from Maya Angelo that I thought I would pass on:


"I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today,
life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow."

"I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way
he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled
Christmas tree lights."

"I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents,
you'll miss them when they're gone from your life."

"I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as "making
a life."

"I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance."

"I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's
mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back."

"I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I
usually make the right decision."

"I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one."

"I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone.

People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back."

"I've learned that I still have a lot to learn."

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will
forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

What a wealth of wisdom! I'm taking this one for my own today. I'm faced with informing a co-worker that she is sabotaging her chances of an upcoming promotion, for which she is a shoe-in, by her growing unprofessional attitude/manner. I also am pretty sure that it is largely the pressures of the position she holds now that is causing the attitude. Wish me luck.

My husband and I use to take our highschool students from our church on a backpacking or canoe trip or bicycle trip each year just for this purpose. They learned alot about them selves and each other. Some of the seeming "dorky" kids were very helpful and resourceful and earned alot of respect. Some of the jocks were the biggest babies.; It was a real eye opener for the kids. They got really close and stopped the cliques. They grew up alot. I loved it. Some of the shy dorky kids changed that week.One became a pastor, One a police officer.
I looked foreward to the trip each year. The more stressful the preparation for me , I found the more awesome the trip would be in terms of the kids getting alot out of it.
