The current edition of Mother Earth News (Oct/Nov 2008) has a great article by Gary Taubes titled "What Really Makes Us Fat". Subtitle is "Here's how modern medicine has failed us. Hint: Grandma knew best."

It's a very good article on the fattening effects of carbohydrates along with charts of the increasing calorie trend (2255 - 2850 from 1970 til 2000); refined grains and sweetener consumption. I am so pleased to see this article in this particular magazine--perhaps not a mainstream one, but certainly one read by folks wanting to live a simple "clean" life. The article is not on their web pages yet, but probably will be in a few weeks. http://www.motherearthnews.com/.

That's great, BC. "Grandma Knew Best", eh? That would appeal. I didn't know it was still in print, actually.

Obviously Gary Taubes never met my grandmother  :p. I was raised in true PA style - carbs served with a side of carbs ;). But seriously, it is wonderful to get the news out to those who may not have come across it anywhere else !

Your grandmother was ahead of her time, Shadow ;).

The article seems to be up on the web-site now: Good Calories, Bad Calories (http://www.motherearthnews.com/Natural-Health/2008-10-01/Dietary-Fat-Health-Weight.aspx).

Thanks, Janet. It wasn't there yesterday morning when I looked, but they sometimes take a few days to a week to put up the current issue.

And yes, Carol, Mother Earth News is still in publication. It's been my favourite magazine since the mid-'70's.

I used to read it back then.

She never met mine either ... who ended up dying of complications of diabetes ... and carbs were her main staple. She dipped chocolates almost 6 months of the year, and always -- always had a loaf of homemade bread on the counter.

Although I was raised in "typical" '50-'60's eating patterns: meat, a green veggie, potatoes or pasta and bread, when my grandmother or mother began putting on weight, the first things to go were the starches and sugar, not the protein or fat. Although, of course, if you are not eating bread or potatoes, you're also not eating the butter that goes on them. Ditto for chocolate cake.

I think Taubes makes a good point in the article when he quotes that cutting just calories also cuts nutrition, but primarily cutting starchy foods keeps the nutrition intact.

I can remember my mimi telling me that if I want to lose wait, get the white foods out of my diet. She was in her 70's at the time in the late 1970's. For some reason, that has always stuck with me. Not that I followed her advice, but the saying always stuck with me.
