I ordered a four boxes of Truvia directly from the Cargill site, truvia.com and it arrived yesterday. Truvia is made from stevia but derived through some proprietery process which isolates the sweetest parts of the plant. By te way, a box 40 packets (each the typical equivalent of 2 tsp. sugar) sells for $3.99, which is more expensive than other sweeteners--for the moment, at least.

I tried it in my coffee and am peasantly surprised with the taste. It's a different sweetness than Splenda (I use the liquid stuff from sweetzfree.com), but a good sweetness all the same.

Now, I like my coffee strong and sweet (as any other Cuban-American is likely to). And I also find that coffee is the most difficult thing to sweeten as the heat brseems to bring out the worst of the aftertastes. In the past I've used Equal and Splenda, and whereas both work well, both have a sharp aftertaste which, I assume, is the result of using large amounts of an artificial sweetener (for 16 oz of coffee I use 6 Splenda packets or, more recently, 9 drops of the carb-free liquid variety). But with this new stuff I find no sharp aftertaste even dumping 6 packets into 16 oz of coffee.

By the way, the filler in these packets is erythritol, which is a super-low glycemic polyol. I use it in baking, yogurt cheese, and other applications, so I'm already used to its taste (about 70% as sweet as sugar with a slight cool and metallic aftertaste). It will be interesting to see (or taste, actually) what other products (e.g., Coke, Pepsi).

So, I thought it will be interesting to hear what others think of Truvia.

I don't process erythritol particularly well. But I don't like my coffee as confection-like as people from can growing countries (personal observation: Cubans, Vietnamese, other Latins all like it very sweet). I don't have a problem with splenda at 2 packets/16 ounces.

I'm glad to hear you've found something you like. 6 packets is a lot of sweetener in one coffee -- I use a half of one! Unfortunately, I've never met a stevia product that I liked. I even tried a super expensive one (can't remember the name) that was supposed to be extracted from the non-bitter portion. It was tolerable, but caked into a solid blob after a few weeks. I prefer Sweet One any day over any of them. Can't figure out why it's not more readily available as it really is good with no aftertaste that I can discern.
