View Full Version : Shouldn't there be a "Snacks" section somewhere?

I have been through most of the PP Kitchen area but, I wouldn't mind if someone started a snack section or a munchie section that I could g directly to and see what others are cooking up when they have horrible cravings or T.V. munchie attacks.:D I know that I have been trying to think of a healthy lc snack that I might even gorge myself on and it would not have too much effect on my weight. Maybe even a celery go together that satisfies the cravings of salt and crunch but, doesn't break the carb bank if you overindulge?!?

I'm sure there are others out there that are lurking in the corners thinking that pp wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to give up potatoe chips, popcorn, cheetos, anything that goes ****CRUNCH****** :D and makes my cravings subside! I have T.V. snack woes and haven't been satisfies with the usual things. Microwaved pepperoni, fried cheese, etc.

Begging for other suggestions!!!!

Snacks are listed in the breakfast and meals to go description - we could have a thread in there to collect recipes, like the threads for muffins etc.

Mitra, if you would do that, that would be great!!!!!:D I would love to see a collection all in one spot so, it would be easy to find.
I hope it wouldn't be too much trouble??? Maybe it would spur everyone to add their tips, tricks, or recipes for food that quelms the "munchies"!

What ya think?

Sounds like a good idea - but I'm just about to go to bed, and I've already turned my brain off for the night, so I'll do it in the morning :).

Mal Lady, do you really have cravings, or is this just something to eat while watching tv? I just ask because usually cravings are a sign of something being off. Like insulin is too high or when a person is just coming off industrial food.

But I know you've been doing PP a while. Just curious

The other thing to take a look at is habitual eating triggers--the 'munching because I *always* munch in this situation' syndrome.

I am a movie bug, and when I had a free movie pass (our ad agency had a local theatre chain as a client), there were long winter weekends when friends and I would see three or four movies in a row--with all the theatre munchies that implies. Movies and munchies, in my head, just went together. I wasn't hungry--it was a habit. The solution wasn't healthier munchies; it was recognizing that I wasn't really hungry, and that muchies at that time were based on a habit that could be changed. When I got a handle on it, it was an end to that particular spot of mindless eating.

Now, I write, or sew, or groom dogs while watching TV. It's really hard to do muchies when my hands are otherwise occupied (and while english cocker scavengers are cuddled up next to me. ;) )

The one that's hard for me is facing a task I don't really want to do so before I start, I look around for distractions. Munching is one of them that still hangs on.

Well, one shameful thing is - I haven't been eating right!:o That 3rd meal is not one I easily get in. So, I know that I'm to blame. But, popcorn is a "habit" thing ever since being a little girl. We grew it, we ate it. Easy to do and always on hand. So, combine the 2 (I am hungry & it is easy) then that's what I go for.

I am changing my habit this week. Last night I bought a lc dip and broccoli & celery and I will try to munch on them instead. I just need to break the habit. I do have the grooming table in front of the t.v. and the Mals are getting combed out - a little at a time. So, this week, I will break the habit!

Yet, I still like the idea of having a "snack" section and everybody contribute their ideas. I am always looking for new things to try!

i totally understand. That one has gotten me too - I have 2 good meals earlier in the day and when 3d one comes around, it seems like too much trouble, yet I do need something. Oy!

And, I am a popcorn aficianado myself. not nowadays but every once in a while.

Pork rinds work really well when you are looking for a crunch. I have some Ceasar Dressing that has no carbs that I use for a dip. That works when I get the munchies. When I get the sweet tooth, I have found an 85% Cocoa bar from Lindt (dark chocolate) that has only 5 net carbs for a 4 square serving (the whole bar is 10 squares). I has regular sugar, but the carbs are so low that it doesn't bother me.

I did start a snacks and nibbles thread - but nobody has put anything in it yet.

Ok--I just linked into the thread Mitra started all of the threads which have already been posted which contain recipes for snacks and munchies. There are actually quite a few of them, and they are in different sections based on whether they're sweet or savory, whether they can be meals to go, etc.

I also moved the thread to the Appetizers section, since if this were a cookbook, that's probably where they'd be.

Just a reminder--if you're looking for something in the PP Kitchen and you can't find it, rather than using the 'search' function (which is not perfect...), try opening the PP Kitchen sections and looking at the sticky Recipe index for the section. The threads are in alphabetical order, and they lists most of the recipes in the section, in alpha order by recipe name, with carb and protein counts where available. The boldface thread title links you directly to the thread that contains the recipe.

Exceptions are recipes that are posted in their own threads, or the most recently added recipes--those aren't listed in the index until one of the moderators has spare time to weed through and edit in the new stuff. While I was in NYC this spring I got a little behind; I'm slowly going through the sections one at a time and they should all be up-to-date in a couple weeks.

Enjoy!

Thank-you Gaelen and Mitra for all this work. I appreciate being able to find these snacks and hope everyone will contribute anything they eat inbetween meals.

Something I sometimes do for crunch:

pork rinds, Franks red hot sauce, a couple TBS of sour cream and some jalapenos. This gives me crunch and spice and heat and almost reminds me of salsa and chips which I used to love!
