Okay, this (http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/conditions/07/07/children.cholesterol.drugs.ap/index.html) is the scariest thing I've read in some time.

For the first time, an influential doctors group is recommending that some children as young as 8 be given cholesterol-fighting drugs to ward off future heart problems.http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/base_skins/baseplate/corner_wire_BL.gif

It is the strongest guidance ever given on the issue by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which released its new guidelines Monday. The academy also recommends low-fat milk for 1-year-olds and wider cholesterol testing.

Dr. Stephen Daniels, of the academy's nutrition committee, says the new advice is based on mounting evidence showing that damage leading to heart disease, the nation's leading killer, begins early in life.

It also stems from recent research showing that cholesterol-fighting drugs are generally safe for children, Daniels said.

Several of these drugs are approved for use in children and data show that increasing numbers are using them.

I wonder how they have demonstrated safety for children when they haven't really demonstrated safety for adults.

I think they already have our pets too.

Here's what Dr Eades had to say about it and the seven recommendations by the board. This whole thing stinks of big pharma.

The way I feel about statins for myself, I look at this as child abuse.

My 9 month old had her check up yesterday. i asked my ped what his opinion was. First, he had not heard anything about this. Secondly, he does not agree with medicating children unless there is an absolute need. He said that he does have some children on statins, but not prescribed by him. That their family histories (and possibly their chol) had chol in the 800's, not 200.

He said that he would not be testing for chol in his patients. I told him that my opinion remains high.

This story is sad all over.

I will still consider putting children on statins to be fast tracked evolution, only cruelly inflicted by parents rather than the self-selection that statins in adults are.
