Got a call from the doc and my Cholesterol is the best it has been in years. First time in ages I didn't have to listen to a spiel about how I need to start on statins !! OH my goodness that feels good.
Thank you Protein Power board and Dr. Mike and Mary Dan !!
Total Cholesterol 199
ldl 100
hdl 74
triglycerides 54
ratio 1.35
But I do have a new problem as they said my potassium is too high. He had me stop a bp med I have taken for quite a while now and I must go back for a retest on potassium next Thursday.
Wonder what the heck could have caused that !! I have been taking supps to hopefully help lower my cholesterol such as fish oil, grape seed extract, lechithin (thanks Carol) and krill oil. All those things are supposed to lower it --but does anyone know if they could possibly cause a person to have higher potassium levels ?????
Any info would be appreciated.

I have no idea on the potassium, I'm afraid - but great news on the rest :D.
Do you use a salt substitute that's high in potassium?

Repeating the test is a good idea. Potassium belongs in the cells rather than out and about (opposite of sodium) and if cells burst or lyse in the blood draw process or in the tube it can give a false positive/high value. Just a thought.

Mitra ,no I don't use any of the potassium supplements or salts because of my blood pressure meds.
Hopefully, it will turn out as LisaS said a false positive--yes that would be great. Thanks for the info about that, Lisa !!

Karole,
I'm not aware of any of those supplements being associated with elevated potassium levels.
Your follow-up test and being off your meds should help determine what the cause (likely) is.
Try not to worry too much. It could be something as simple as you needing a medication reduction.

Way to go! Congratulations! :D:):D
Do you track your food intake? I use Diet Power which tracks a lot of the nutrients so I can tell specifically what foods are contributing to the nutrient breakdown. I don't know if FitDay does that, but I'm sure there some that do. Perhaps inputting your foods for a few days might help you see if you are getting too much from your diet.

SS, I did go to your blog and read it. I appreciate the info there as well as the above post !!
Am trying not to be to concerned about this -- and I don't have any of the symptoms of very high potassium that was listed in one of the links in your blog (on medicine/supp interactions) So, still am hopeful it is a false reading, but we'll have to wait and see.
Thanks again.

That's great news, Karole! Congratulations!!
Keep my fingers crossed for a false reading of elevated potassium level!
