Sharon - Are you still being held hostage today ??????
Hope to see all of you today, including those who - like me - were not online this weekend :).
But while I was gone, my M&S consisted of:
Legs and abs
Cardio
Back, biceps and shoulders

Yes, but I'm in negotiations right now. I'm going to be proving my point and making headway to a permanent release. More details later! You'll get a kick out of this!!!:D

Hm...kind of faded last week, didn't I? :o
Sunday I was dealing with some pretty intense knee pain. This is usually helped by a walk, but I ended up sitting instead :o.
Okay, this week is SUPER busy in the evening, but bosses are gone after today which means I can (and will) go to the gym every day (after today):o.

Sharon - Hope the negotiations are going well :). You must be a far more mellow person than I am... My ex-husband would be the first to tell you how non-compliant *I* am when given orders  :p!
Amy - Sorry about the knee :(!!! But it looks like you're going to have a great workout schedule for this week !!!!
Okay - where are the rest of you :suspicious:????

Shadow you will be pleased with me. I went by our local yoga/pilates studio today. They were giving away a free week of classes. I signed up from now till the end of May. Figured if I like it, I'll make a bigger committment at that time. Plan to go to yoga basics class tonight. Want to work my way back up to power yoga in the next couple weeks. They only have one power yoga class a week. Guess it's not too popular here.
I was even able to locate my yoga mat. That was an accomplishment.

Sharon, I'm just lucky DH has a quirky sense of humor and I can usually make him laugh. ;)
Shadow, I can just see it! :D I'm no different. DH just figured out how to get compliance without direct orders. ;)
Okay, back to the topic! No gym today because I'm home with a bug. I have done some stretches and I visit the calf-blaster every couple of hours.

There is no reasoning with DH because he always feels he's right. So, if I have the proof of how he spends his time and how I spend mine for a few days - then, prood is in the lc creme brulee!!!!:D (No pudding available). I usually can make him feel bad for yelling at me but, for some reason - not this time!!!! I'll get to him somehow. For now, I catch him loafing (he won't admit) got times, days, specifics. My timesheet - working all the time - getting things done - always busy - then, I spring it on him and he backs off. He's been on the phone for over an hour with his dad so I get time to do this!!!! Tomorrow or Wednesday, I'll be working on the landscape at the other house we own and have for sale :(. Cutting back grasses, daylilies, prune trees and shrubs, tidy up flower beds. So, I'll be real tired after that - whichever day that will be. The next day WILL be at the "Y" in the pool and whirlpool!!!! I can guarantee that!!! He will just get over it !
Today, I went to the chiro. He said the next time I come in to his office in that bad of shape - he's gonna kick my butt!!!(really said A--!!!!) He's a good family friend so, he gets away with it.:p But, I should have kept my appointment last week and not cancelled!!:o I just got to start taking care of myself and stop letting him bully me around. When I get with his dm, she'll let him have it when she gets a hold of him. I talked to her a few minutes ago and she is furious. We'll both gang up on him when I get the timesheets together!!! Hee Hee Hee!!!! I'm feeling a little better already.
Well, gonna get a meal fixed and relax the rest of the night - whether he likes it or not - or I'm gonna blow my top!!!! I'll start making his life miserable. He's been saying I've been a crank - Well, I've not even got started!!!

Walked with dh for 25 min. today and that is it for exercise. I would have gone further, but he wanted to turn back. It doesn't seem to hurt my back when I walk now, so that is improvement. I go back to chiro on Weds. so will ask him for exercises specific to my situation. Got to do something !!

Here's my report on yoga after a 1.5 year absence. This was an interesting experience. First, the classes here are 1.5 hours long which is challenging. Second, I went to the beginner class tonight. It is designed for people who have never done yoga before. I was acutely aware of the 40 lbs I have regained-particularly that roll of fat around my midsection. the other strange thing was that I knew all the postures but they were physically difficult for me to do because I am out of shape. I think I could go to a higher level class in terms of undersanding what is going on but I'm concerned that I couldn't keep up physically right now. I also talked to the teacher a little before hand about my previous experience and my desire to lose some weight. She recommended the ashtanga yoga but I think that would kick my butt right now and I couldn't do it so that can be a goal for me. I think I'm going to try the beginners class one more time and then try the all levels class. I can always just sit in child's pose or do modifications if it is too much for me physically at first. I think it will be awhile before I'm doing power yoga again.

Hello everybody,
I hope that all these injuries are much better or over now and you are enjoying your M&S as ever!!:D And Petra, congratulations on resuming your yoga class after such a break!
Sorry to be so late with my reporting and it looks as if it is going to be even worse . We are spending the coming festival with my parents and we are leaving on Thursday morning. I'm taking my DVDs with me and plan to do at least something every other day, as far as it is possible but I am not quite sure if I will be able to post everyday. I promise myself to help my Mum with things and most of all to spend as much time as possible with/and for her (I have no problem with spending all the time with my Dad or my friends, though). And no discussions (arguments) with her about food, another good resolution of mine. As you see, I plan to be a good mummy's girl (and stay on the PP Plan), wish me good luck 'cos I really need it!
Monday - Warm up (5 min) + 10 min solution Arms + Stretching (5 min)
Tuesday - Walk Away the Pounds 1 Mile + Indoor Bike (15' - intervals)
I've decided to start Callanetics Countdown, 30 days to a beautiful body after my coming back. I have a book, a Callanetics DVD and it still looks like something too hard for me (I mean: am I going to be able to do the exercise right? will it work for me? and all this sort of questions..) Anyway, will know the answer in a fortnight or so...;)

Adina,
I do wish you luck!!:D I'll be thinking of you! I hope you have a wonderful time! I know how hard it is not to state your thoughts when others voice their opinions. But, you must remember, they are your parents and you won't always have them. :( So, speak softly, do your thing, control your emotions and know that pp is right for you. Despite what ever anyone else things. I wish I still had my parents.:( I know there is a lot of things I would have did differently. Always respect, but, know your mind. It will be easy for you! Just keep your cool and know that once your trip is over - you'll be feeling good about everything and had a lot of fun.
Have a wonderful time!!!!

Hi All!
I'm gonna get a great workout today!! Bending, stretching, stooping, lifting, all sorts of stuff!!!:D I'm doing yard work today!!! So, I'll get in lots of fresh air and exercise plus burn off all of my stress and anxiety. :D It's sunny and suppose to get up to 58 today and I'm ready for a great day!!! Meals are planned so, I'm ready to go. I'll burn plenty of fat today. Keeping hydrated, got my water and ice. Peanuts for a snack and a pork shoulder in the oven.
Shadow, you will be so proud of me and I will be stiff and so achey tomorrow!! I'll be going to the "Y" just to soak my tired sore muscles.
I will be sooooo happy to be outside and get to feel the sun on my face.
I hope you all have a great day!!! I know I will!!!!

Muscle memory is a wonderful thing .
Or a curse. You should hear me trying to explain to a family how their loved one with severe alzheimer's can still "remember" how to cut the grass even though he doesn't recognize his son anymore. Something families can't comprehend.
Anyway, I think you are right, I felt like I was one step ahead of the teacher last night and was aware that she was skipping certain things since this was a beginner class. Sounds like everyone is off to a good week.

Mary, that remark brought back fond memories of my FIL helping me through big-city traffic when he couldn't even remember that I was bringing him to a doctor appointment. Poor dear.
Amy, maybe you should beat the bed with a tennis racket and get some of that frustration out. :paranoid:
I made it to the gym tonight, Miss Shadow. I did my normal routine except that I didn't work the bike hard enough to get my pulse up past 100 or so. Just enough to loosen up.

Walked 30 min. this evening with dh. San't wait to find out if I can do weights again, not that I lift heavy ones, but I am not going to do anything til I check it out.
I am reading a book by Jorge Cruise 8 Minutes in the Morning. Do you know it Shadow?? He doesn't seem to suggest anything that would be beyond me --if my back will cooperate. What do you think of his way? Would it be a good work out ??

Carol - Yeah for you! As for the bike, no worries - just consider it a bit of variety to keep your body guessing ;).
Karole - I am sorry, but I've never heard of it :o. However, if it's something that will work for you and is not going to aggravate your back, then I think you should definitely try it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I take it as a great sign that you're missing your weights !!!!

Back, shoulders, biceps

Chest and triceps

Hi, y'all,
Back late last night from a continuing ed conference. Whew, not used to "sitting" all day.
The saving grace was "running" through airports changing planes to and from the conference.
The scale says I am up 0.6lb, but I can see I am really bloated, so hopefully, it will dissapear soon.
Taking today off to unpack, wash clothes, etc.
Today:
Callenetics Quick tapes, abd/waist, Body Flex Plus. Will walk tonight with my DH & neighbor.
I have missed y'all.
Ammy, hope you enjoy your trip to Texas on Saturday.

Hi Everyone!!!
It is a beautiful day out. I spend most of the day outside yesterday. (From 1:30 - 8:30) I spent a lot of time sitting on top of a bucket trimming these little "Elijah Blue" grasses. Other times were spent raking and pulling weeds and cleaning up the mess. Today, my lower back is so achey. I feel wore out. At least I faired better than I thought I would. It was a most relaxing day.
Later today, I'll get to the whirlpool and pool and hopefully soak away the pains,
It is so nice and sunny today - I hope it stays this way - but, it won't.
Tomorrow, and Friday there is suppose to be rain. But, it will help the flowers bloom.:D
DH has been so nice to me today. I think he actually missed me yesterday!!!;) I need to get away more often.
He helped me take some measurements today. I think the tape was pulled a lot tighter this time than last time. It says I lost about 5 inches. I might have done that. I do feel thinner. Just scale isn't budging. I'll contribute that to more muscle!!!!!:p Since I didn't have any to begin with - anything I do has to be making me stronger. I didn't tire out so fast yesterday as I normally would. Didn't take as many breaks and for less time when I did. I drank quite a bit of water yesterday, which got me up in the middle of the night about 6 times. But, I didn't let my knees and back get as stiff by doing that. So, all and all I was really happy about the progress. Hopefully, when I have to mow the lawn, I'll notice a difference in my strength and endurance there too.
Well, I want to see what is going on elsewhere around here. So, I wish you all a great day!

Claudette, it's good to have you back with us!
Made it to the gym and had a nice talk with the owner/trainer, who is a friend of my brother's. I picked his brain a bit and got some advice. He showed me the correct way to use the leg press and the bicep curl, which makes me feel better. He also said it was fine to do the cardio every day, but switch off on muscle groups. Twice a week per group is plenty. Okay, okay. Something I know, but don't always follow. ;)
I also tried the calf thingy. I don't know if it's any better or worse than the rubber wedge called the BOB that I've been borrowing. The legs seem to like it.

Went to beginner yoga class again tonight. I have definately decided I need to move on. I really liked this instructor. She explained mountain pose in a way I had never heard before and I felt like I "got it" for the first time even though I've probably done it hundreds of times. Because this is a beginner class they insist you use props for some of the poses. When you already know how to do to them without the props this is very awkward and uncomfortable. Time to move on. There is an all levels class tomorrow night I'm going to try to make and see if that fits a little better.
Good to see you on this thread Carol!!!! :):):)Is this the first time you have joined a gym?? :pI am soooooo proud of you and geezer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

Carol - But all those noodle lashes were made with love ;).
Mary - Hope tomorrow night's class is a perfect fit for you! And if not... I'm sure there are more classes you can try :D!
Petra...I feel the same way about Pilates. I love to hear the descriptions from the beginner classes so I can catch something I maybe didn't hear or learn when I was in the beginner stages...but I don't like to attend them.
I need the intermediate and sometimes (although not often) the advanced. The Y is really good about covering all levels all the time, so people all over the room are doing the same pilates move in all three of the levels.

I used to find it fascinating when I taught yoga classes, that you could teach exactly the same thing to the beginners class and the experienced one, and it would be the beginners who complained that it was too easy. The more experienced group were working more on maintaining good form, and keeping their breathing long and steady, so that even quite easy postures would become challenging. The beginners didn't have the experience to do that, and they would be the ones who were always demanding to do wacky postures to make it more exciting. Often the main difference between the two groups was just that I talked more in the beginners class.
yeah, and then not being able to WALK the next day cause they were so sore!!!:p

Did my first exercise with the Jorge Cruise method.
Day one : Exercise A Dumbell press for the chest -12 reps 4 sets
Exercise B Two arm row for the back - 12 reps 4 sets
It also provides a warm up and cool down stretches, so I know you'll like that Shadow.
This is Thursday so we will be going to the line dancing lessons for more exercise this evening.

Hey, I've been here since at least February, so we've been missing each other. I used to be at the Y at quarter to six every morning winter and summer (before Geezer) but did mostly cardio. Then I switched to XC in the winter and cycling in the summer. Then I was down to walking only, which led to the knee problem a year ago. The new gym opening up was great timing for me, and the Geezer thinks he's helping me by being there. ;) That boy needs it, too! We both feel better.

Quote Shadow; Karole - Yeah for you :)!!!!! Are all of his workouts designed as push/pull (i.e. opposing muscle group) exercises or can you mix and match?
Huh?????
All I know is that each day he has exercise A that you do 12 reps of, then you do exercise B for 12 reps. You do 4 sets of each
Day one :Dumbell press for chest
Two arm row for back
Day two: Lateral raise for shoulders
Crunch for abs
Day three: Lying kickback for triceps
Standing curl for biceps
Day four: Hamstring Leg lift for hamstrings
Squats for quadriceps
Day five: Standing heel raise for calves
Kick up for behind
Day six: Inner thigh raise for inner thigh
Doggie for outer thigh
Day seven: rest
He has 4 weeks of different exercises.
Does that help?
I don't know if I'm push/pulling different muscles or not.

How do you guys make that nice blue box when you quote some one?? I can't do it.
Karole - All you do is hit the "quote" button at the bottom right of a post. If you edit any text out, you need to make sure what is left starts with
and ends with . Does that help?
And yes, he is doing push/pull. All that means is when you work a muscle, then you work the opposing muscle. For example, back pulls, chest pushes. Biceps pull, triceps push. Just envision how the weights go for the exercise and I think it will "click" for you :).

Karole - All you do is hit the "quote" button at the bottom right of a post. If you edit any text out, you need to make sure what is left starts with the word "quote" in brackets and ends with with the word "quote" also in brackets but with a / before the word "quote". But you don't include the apostrophes. I tried to lay it out for you but of course, using the brackets with the word simply puts it in the blue box . I'm not good at describing anything you do on a computer, but does that help?

That is hard to explain, isn't it? I like pictures, too. :)
I think my treadmill work, slight as it is, is paying off already! I'm still not carrying full weight on the knee but the motion is smoother and afterward I was able to walk through the store and out to the car without actual pain. Just some weakness. :exclamation: I doubt that it's just the weather because it's supposed to rain tomorrow. Progress! :D

By George, I've got it !!
Thanks so much for your help, Shadow !!
And yes, I do see now what you meant by the push /pull question.
I think I will like doing these as they seem to be something I can accomplish, and his explanations and pictures are clear.
He's a low fat guy, but does like "good" fats.

I went to the all levels yoga class tonight. This was the right class for me. It was not over my head and I was challenged. I even broke a sweat. I was one of the less experienced people in the class but certainly not the only one but I could keep up. I was challenged. I'm not sure this was any particular kind of yoga but I'm not all that knowledgable either. We didn't seem to be doing poses in any particular order. Tomorrow I'm going to a class that is all based on stretching-maybe hatha yoga? I'm trying several things to see what feels comfortable and what doesn't.
I ordered 2 books on Ashtanga yoga. The Ashtanga class was going on right before the one I did tonight. They actually turn the heat on for that class .

Hello again!!!!
I have been so sore since Tuesday, that I have barely been able to walk, definitely cannot bend over and very uncomfortable all over.:( Boy, I will never do that again. I was sitting on a 5 gallon bucket, all bent over, trimming these little grasses (about 6 inches tall) for over 5 hours straight. I am sure paying for it now. The back of my calves, my lower back, the tops of my forearms, my shoulders - they are all screaming at me!!! They are saying "You dumb fool!!!! What were you thinking!!!:confused: You ever do that again and I'm leaving!!!!!!!:p The pain is starting to subside but, it has been a slow process. I am going to get to the "Y" and soak in the whirlpool and move a little in the pool and see if I can get feeling better. I just haven't even felt like moving at all!!! DH has been razzing me whenever he can get the jib in. All in good fun though. He has been treating me so good lately. I know he does feel sorry for me. At least I've worked my way back to obtaining sympathy from him. He even fixed me a snack last night. He's back to normal and hopefully washed all the grumpies down the drain with his shower.
But, one good thing. I got all the work done in the flower beds.:o I know Shadow is lurking around here somewhere. I can't outrun her so, I'll take my lashings like a bad girl! It couldn't hurt any more than I already do. Just think Shadow, I am building all this muscle in places I have never had any!! (Probably don't even need it!!) That is the bright side.
I hope you all have a great weekend. Enjoy the beautiful flowers. I think some of us in the midwest will be getting some rain over the weekend. But, like the old saying goes, "April Showers, brings May flowers."
Shadow, I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!!! I have missed not being here much this last week to chat with you.
Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!! got to go!!!!!!!!!!!!! Puppy digging in mulch!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bye!!!

Carol - The way my mind works, I always find pictures helpful :o. Even then I can still get confused!
Karole - I'm so glad you "got" it :D! Now here's a suggestion.... after 6 - 8 weeks of your workouts, you may want to (if the dvd will allow it) change the combinations so that you do push/push and pull/pull muscles for a while. This will keep you from adapting to the workouts and keep your body guessing :). So then you would do chest/triceps and back/biceps, etc. But it's just a suggestion! There are other things you can do to keep your workout "fresh" when you need a change .
Mary - So glad the yoga classed worked better for you ! And way to go on checking out different kinds/classes to see what fits you!
Sharon - Glad you got those beds done so next week you can get back to the exercise ;).

Sorry you are so sore Sharon !! I can relate--if I had done that work I would not be able to stand upright. Gardening really gets to my back fast.
On the bright side-- it isn't even quite 9:30 a.m. and I have already done my resistance for the day. It was a good work out and I can certainly tell I did some work so I would say it will have to help me gain muscle.
Day 2
Warm up
Exercise A (for my shoulders )--Lateral Raises--5# weights
12 reps
4 sets
Exercise B (for my abs) --Crunches
12 reps
4 sets
Cool Down
I need to work on concentrating on breathing correctly. I seem to forget this , but I will definitely work on it.
I feel really good all over (is it the exercise or is it cuz the exercise is done?):D
Hmmmm.

Karole -! I think the answer is that it's both ;)! Anyway, what a wonderful report on that resistance exercise !!!! And it will just get better! Wait until you find yourself flexing your muscles so you can catch a glimpse of them !

(I've already been guilty of flexing and glimpsing-- but at least I can see them now!)
Better than that, a young friend at line dancing last night saw my bicep muscle and commented that I must have been doing something with weights !! Sooo, it is noticeable.
Thank you, thank you very much-I owe it all to my trainer: Ms. Shadow !!

Aw shucks - I just did some advising... YOU did all the hard work !
PS - Remember, inhale on the easiest part of the move, exhale on the hardest part ;)... Or inhale on the "negative" part and exhale on the "positive" part... However it's easiest for you to remember :p.

I got home too late from work to go to yoga tonight so I'll have to wait until tomorrow morning. Not the end of the world but a bit of a disappointment.

Today was lower body and cardio. Ten minutes on the treadmill yesterday was enjoyable; today it was painful and my knees are sore. I'm glad I have a couple of days with just home stretches to rest them up. The rest of me is just fine!
Karole, it sounds like you're getting BUFF! ;)
Mary, I'm sure it is disappointing for you to miss the class you were looking forward to trying. Seems like you've found quite a few choices in yoga!

This may seem hard to believe but I think my arms are already less flabby. Can that be? I'm planning to remeasure myself at the beginning of May so I'll have a more objective idea but it seems that way. that's some quick results. I've also already lost the 3 lbs I gained this past week.

Go Mary, Go !! Wonderful about the 3 lbs !!:thumbsup:
Carol, I wouldn't say buff, but I can definitely see some muscle that I have never seen before in this lifetime !!:cool:
Gf and I are going shopping today so I did my 8 min. in the morning earlier than ever and have that under my belt. :)
Exercise A for triceps Lying Kickback
Exercise B for biceps Standing Curl
All done, feel good -- let me at those stores !!:D

Sharon - Glad you got those beds done so next week you can get back to the exercise ;).
Shadow,
You're not a kiddin'!!! I'm still sore in some places!!! :( I can't believe it is taking me so long to recuperate. My shoulders are still touchy and I have a vein in my left leg that is still very painful and tingly. I don't know what is up with that. I am just glad I only have to do that cleanup once a year.
I feel like I have lost quite a few inches, though. DH tried to help me with the tape measure the other day, but, I'm not sure he pulled it in the same way he did the first time. It seemed he was pulling it awful tight this time. Maybe so I would feel good about losing inches and not pounds. :o Anyway, it showed that I lost about 5 inches all over from last month. So, instead of losing pounds since joining the "Y" I have been gaining muscle. I hope that is true
I am anxious to get back to working out. I am definitely ready. I got to get back on that human hamster wheel.(treadmill)
I hope you all have a great weekend!

I think so, because when you work them one day and they heal up the next, they're stronger. Isn't that a great feeling?

The yoga class I went to this morning was awesome. It was taught by the lady who owns the studio. It was another all levels classShe integrated some meditation and some of the spiritual aspects of yoga into the class which I've never seen anyone do before. Either I am regaining quickly (muscle memory) or she just chose poses that were easier for me to do today but I felt like I was getting my mojo back. We didn't do any intense things but for some of the poses I was doing the most advanced version and others I was doing the easiest. Sort of strange but I suppose that is the point of that class. I'm going to look forward to this class every week. I broke a sweat again which is good in my book. She (the teacher) does kripalu yoga (not sure about spelling) and I also don't know much about this style. However she teaches several different classes including the power yoga class. Maybe Janet can enlighten us.

So glad the yoga classes are so varied and they give you a choice. Makes it a lot nicer for you and will keep you motivated. I never have tried yoga but I've looked at some of the photos in books and my goodness it looks hard to me.
I just did my extra for the day, a 35 min. walk with dh. Soooooo very glad he is walking with me lately as his bp hasn't been all that great and mayhaps it will help him out with that. Seems to help me.
