Hi, I was wondering if you take calcium supps at all? My calcium has D3 in it and that is what you want to have. (D3) I also take Carlsons cod liver oil in the winter and it has vitamin D.
Hope that will help.

Lucille, I use cod liver oil, and it's pricey. Dr. Mike recommended vitamin D3 in his blogs. This (below) is just a little quote from it. He also says anyone who lives in the northern climes needs it. It's not expensive. I've also done a lot of reading from other sources that recommend it. I have capsules in 2,200 IU each and I take two a day.

I wanted to get this brief note up to encourage everyone to take vitamin D3 at least during the winter months. There is abundant evidence that vitamin D helps prevent cancer, heart disease, colds and flus, along with a host of other disorders…and even helps people lose weight. Vitamin D3 is the optimal form in which to take this supplement. I would recommend at least 5,000 IU per day.

I take CLO daily for the Vitamins A & D as well as EPA and DHA. It's a pretty good source and is very well absorbed by the body.

I read somewhere that the RDA of Vitamin D (I think about 400 mg?) isn't nearly enough and that 1000 mg is really what we should all be taking, but I'm not sure about that.

I have a special issue with Vitamin D because lack of absorption of Vitamin D runs in the women in my family, which has caused a great drop in calcium in the bones for my grandmother (now osteo to a pretty severe degree) and my mom (who has a few disks that are osteo but she's watching it). I haven't gotten a bone density test for this yet (had one scheduled on Friday but had to cancel :( ) but I plan on it, just to make sure my Vit D levels are ok. I do take a tablet Vit D of 1000 mg. I actually found it in the vitamin section at Walmart so it's not all that uncommon.

Lucille, D3 is quite widely available in 1000 mg tablets & pretty cheap in Canada as there have been several government studies on how inadequate the RDA is for a country with short winter days and a lot of people with MS. Mike Eades recommends 5000 mg on days you get no sun. I take it with my Magnesium & Calcium before bed, topping up my total amount of D3 in supplements, food & sun to 5000/day.

Tam, does your family take their D3 with calcium & magnesium? Vitamins and minerals are often not well absorbed when taken in isolation.

Because it goes a fairly destructive amount of carbs per serving. Not a good thing.
