Forgive me if there is already a thread on this somewhere. I looked and couldn't find one. I thought I saw Dr. Mike blogging on this subject.
I got my little ACP Journal Club in the mail today-it's a little magazine that reviews what they believe are "important" articles that have come out recently. It's sort of the Cliff Notes. There is an abstract about an article on Vit D. Supplementation and thought you guys might be interested. It's a meta-analysis (which it means it is a statistical review of several other studies). This is considered the gold standard for this kind of study. They reviewed 18 studies and the bottom line was they found that Vit. D. supplementation reduced all cause mortality-approximately 1 death per 150 persons. Mean Vit. D dose was 528 IU.
They gave some recommendations in the commentary section that are reminiscent of PPLP: "5-15 of sun expose at least twice a week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen and a daily Vit. D intake of 200 IU for persons < 50, 400 IU for those 50-70, and 600 IU for those >70."
I don't have the original article so I can't give you minute details but I do have the reference if anyone wants it.
