Hi Everybody. I hope some people out there can hel me with my confusion. Sorry for the long story!
I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia last Oct. Before that, I had two major hypo attacks (had no idea at the time thats what was going on) and decided to go to my doctor to see what was happening. He suspected Hypo and had me do a 3 hour glucose test. My beginnig BG was 84, 1 hour was 200, 2 hours was 141 and hour 3 was 35 (and I had no symptoms of low blood sugar). My doctor told me I was hypo and go to the library and read about it. That was it all he said about it and that it wasnt the end of the world and dont worry about it. I had to look at the lab report to see that I have IGT! I decided to go see an Endo and he ordered more tests to make sure it wasnt anything else. The tests came back fine and he said I have reactive hypo and my pancrease overeats to glucose and gave me some diets to follow. I didnt do the diets suggested, I continued to follow my low carb diet.
I have been doing research on the interent and have found many reports that Insulin resistance and hypo go together and I believe that I could be IR also. Can that be corrected and returned to normal?
The part that confuses me is that how can I suddenly become hypo and possibly IR when I have been eating lots of low carb- lots of veggies, good protein and monounsaturated fat at every meal since March of last year. The only thing that has changed is last year in March, I broke my foot and damaged some tendons so I could not work out until this month. Up until last March, I was a runner- I did a full and a half marathon and worked out alot. Could the sedentary lifestyle have caused this? As a runner I ate carbs for the fuel and once I broke my foot, I cut them out so I wouldnt gain weight.
I am just so confused as to how I suddenly have low blood suagr. Can the lack of exercise and lack of carbs be the cause of this problem??? I am just so frustrated because I think I have it under control and then my body decides to show me who's boss. I am very scared about ever trying to even run 5 miles again. I just picture myself have a hypo attack. Finally, how can I ever drink wine again. All I want to do is drink 2-3 glasses on a Saturday night like everybody else and I am getting scared that I want be able to. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?
Also, I have read about Lipoic Acid, Chromium and other supplements to help with blood glucose. Since I have a tendency to have low blood sugar, would those supplements lower my sugar to much???
Thanks for any help!!!
