Told you all I had lots of questions. Here is my first. I love nuts (especially almonds and macadamias) and I think they're darn good to have in your diet. I want to incorporate 1 or 2 oz into my diet each day by eating less cheese but (heres the problem) if I have them around I eat a lot more then 2 oz. Short of buying just a single day supply does anyone have any suggestions, tricks, or gimicks on how I can limit myself? Anyone else go through a similar problem perhaps with some other favorite food(s)?

As soon as you bring the nuts home, allocate them into single serving bags. Of course that darn willpower comes into play with only allowing yourself one bag....

DJK - Like Vivian, I portion them after bringing them home :). Also, I normally only eat them as a snack at work. That way, I still get them - but there's no more around to tempt me once I've eaten the portion I brought for the day ;).

I portion them out each morning and take just the 1 day's worth to work with me.

I also like nuts in the shell to slow things down - more work you know ;)
Mostly I do this with with pistachios year round - but have been known to get Brazils and walnuts in the shell when they are available. Never cared much for shelling almonds or pecans.

DJK, I tend to get a one day supply of macadamias at the supermarket which is one scoop - about 100 - 150 grams (umm that would be 3 - 5 oz) and that is only once a week (if that) and I don't have cheese that day ... and ... they normally don't survive the drive home!:o Almonds I use as a staple as I don't find I overeat them and I also use them to grind my own almond flour.

The other limiting thing about macadamias is that they are expensive, but I have a friend in Queensland who can get them cheap in bulk for me ....

... not sure I am ready for that yet!!:cool:

You folks are great! Those are good ideas. Much better then a pound of nuts in my desk drawer on Monday and none on Tuesday. I especially think Lisa's idea is Ideal and will look for nuts in the shell. Malcolm, where do you live?. My dream is to retire to the west coast near Perth. I love the wine country out there.

Thanks,

I live in Tasmania just east of Hobart ... and there are a scary number of vinyards just down the road!http://www.diegotorres.com.ar/mensajeitor/foro/caritas/s_o.gif;)

One of the Aussies here has a property in Yallingup which is right in the Margaret River district. Where do you live?

Yes! Having to work to shell all those nuts makes for a "self limiting" snack.:)

I also like almonds and macadamias, and find that I just can't eat too many. Especially when served with a little cheese and some meat. A couple of cornichons, and you've got the world's most perfect snack. Sometimes I have that combo for breakfast. ;)

Portion them, like the others have said.
Do you have one of those vacuum sealers? Apparently they work wonders.
Freeze them or put them (already portioned) in a sealed plastic container or something (out of sight)

I live in Houston Texas. Should pobably update my personel settings. I have done some engineering work for Temco and Aust Newsprint in Tasmania. Made it as far as Melborne but never crossed over to Tasmania. Maybe my next tour. Can you get un-shelled Macadamias where you are?

I haven't seen them recently but probably - but as they are one of the harder nuts to crack it could make that drive home from the shop a bit tricky.;)

My Queensland friend (who occasionally posts here) can get them raw or roasted (shelled) for about 8 AUD a kilo (oh hell that's about $USD2.60 a pound for you people with funny green money - and even funnier measurements!:p) - wheras they cost more than 3 times that in supermarkets here ... so that is a bit of a temptation to say the least. Hmmm maybe I can persuade him to send me 100g a week in an envelope!!http://www.oasisinet.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Great ideas !!! The single serving snack bags will be very handy for lunches and snacks. Could anyone tell me what is the best protein powder to use in my shakes? I would like one that is low in Carbs but still gives me what I need. Thanks for any advice!!

Glenda - The Drs Eades recommend whey protein. I personally use a mix of whey protein concentrate/milk protein isolate. The WPC is a faster acting protein, the MPI a slower acting one :).
