View Full Version : Low Carb Milk question?

Would it be a good idea to use the low carb milk for my protein drinks? I really like the added milky consistancy to my chocolate protein drinks..and had been using 2% milk and watered it down. Then I bought some of the low carb milk...carb countdown? (I believe) and see the difference of the amount of carbs from 12 grs to 3 grams....but, is there are catch?

I definitely don't care for the taste of it...straight that is, but I don't mind it in my protein drink. It definitely seem much thicker then "regular" 2% milk.

Anyone have an opinion?

There's no reason to use low-fat milk, you could use full fat, but use a bit less, or some people use a bit of cream or half and half, watered down to the right consistency (less carbs than low fat milk). I haven't tried the low carb milks, so I can't compare.

I like adding fermented dairy products - like yogurt or kefir.

Like Mitra suggests, if I was going add something else it would be cream or half-n-half, just a tablespoon or so.

We have been using low carb milk since it first became available in our area. We discovered that I have no problem drinking it whereas I have not been able to drink regular milk for years. So it might be worth trying if you are lactose intolerant.

Personally, I use heavy cream and water. Actually, I use that combination for just about anything calling for milk. It tastes similar to low carb milk, and the carb count is about the same. it just doesn't have as many funky ingredients. Good luck! I really can't drink a protein shake unless it has dairy in it.....makes it must more tolerable to me. can you tell I am not a shake person? :D well, milk shakes and frappes...but they aren't low carb!:)

I made the mistake of making a shake first with just yogurt, cream, egg yolk and whatever flavouring. I really liked it - then when I tried one with protein powder, I thought it was disgusting :(. It completely destroyed the fresh, clean taste! I ended up throwing the whole tin of powder away.

Carb Countdown is great as it really is only 3 carbs per cup. A better tasting one that is real milk is Mootopia from HEB, a Texas chain, but it's only available in Texas. Ingredients are: reduced fat milk, lactase enzyme, vit A & vit D3. Wonderful stuff. I wish other companies would make it. BTW, both CarbCountdown and Mootopia only come in 2% or skim, so full fat is not available. But there's plenty of other ways to get fat on this WOE, so drink away.

Thanks everyone for their helpful advise and view. I'm going to look into these milk combinations and see which one I like best. Once again, I've been "conditioned" into buying 2% over the years...lol and never even considered whole milk! lol

Thanks for your help!

I used the Carb Countdown milks (both the white and chocolate) in protein shakes over the past few days and have been very impressed with how much more body it gave them. I've been using an unflavored protein powder this batch.

Mitra,
Do you make protein shakes without the protein powder? If so, can you pass on a recipe?

It's much thicker, isn't it? I'm still on the fence about what to choose...I have made it a goal to buy "organic" milk because of the hormone issues I have...yet, low carb "savings" in the low carb milk also makes sense?...hum...what to do, what to do. I didn't try the chocolate milk yet. Next time I will.

you could always buy organic cream & mix it with water :)

I suppose you'd be horrified to hear about the weight lifters who used to make tunafish shakes in their blender.

Its not actually that bad.

 lol.....ewww... I think I'll give that a pass Dan! lol :p

I saw on Hulk Hogan's reality show...yes, I'll admit, I've watched.... and I saw him talk about how many eggs he has in his refigerator....hard boiled. I mean, I don't recall the exact amount he eats at one time..but it was ALOT! Also, I recall watching Rocky as a kid and he'd drink several (alot too) uncooked eggs.

Carri, without the protein powder, the protein level is obviously much lower, so I usually need a bit more than just a shake to get my minimum in. I don't have a fixed recipe - the base is usually something like 100g of Greek yogurt (6g protein), an egg yolk (3g protein), a Tbsp of almond butter (3g protein), which comes out at 12g protein, 6g carb.

I'll add water if it seems too thick, use the stick mixer to blend in some fruit, or add some coconut milk, sometimes I sweeten it with 1/2 tsp honey, often a little vanilla essence. Sometimes I add half a shot of espresso and a little 85% chocolate (mix to a paste first in a little hot water so it will mix in)...

I'll tell you another thing I wouldn't live without...my MAGIC BULLET for making protein drinks!

http://www.buythebullet.com/

NOTHING beats how nice and quick it makes making a drink! It whips it up and makes it nice and frothy too! I like it's efficiency because you make your drink into the mug you drink it from..so no extra messy clean up, other then rinsing the blade under the faucet right away! LOVE IT, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!

I bought mine off the infomercial after enduring that AWFUL commercial  But, the product was good, and I use it nearly every day. I paid more then I needed too, but buying it off the tv advertisement, I got "more" stuff then what you get if you buy it off the shelf. (More mugs, and a blender attachment)

Anyways, if you hate the fact that making drinks causes extra dishes, OR your just stiring it, and it's lumpy...consider a Magic Bullet. I love mine! If mine broke, I'd go buy me a new one right away.

LOL...Missy, I have a Magic Bullet, too--love it, and use it regularly. It does make awesome pesto, mayo, salsa, cream of any vegetable soup, tapenade, pimento cheese and chicken salad, but I actually use a Braun 200w stick blender for shakes. It's the same principle (clean up is only the cup you blend it in, and the bottom half of the stick blender).

BTW, if your MB ever fails, stay away from the infomercial and get thee to a K-Mart, Wal-Mart (where I got mine), Bed Bath and Beyond, some department stores or one of the national chain drugstores like Walgreens and Rite-Aid to get a replacement. At least you won't get stuck with the $40 shipping. ;)

Carrie, sometimes I also make a 'protein-powderless' shake. Although I like greek yogurt, I usually use a cup of plain kefir (http://www.lifeway.net/product/organic_desc.php) because it can have a better protein/ECC profile (14g protein and 8g ECC per cup). I try to get organic lowfat plain kefir, although the non-organic lowfat plain kefir is very close in nutrient values. Oddly enough, in the case of kefir, the whole milk product has less protein and more carbs...go figure!

Anyway, kefir is already liquid-y, so I just add some ice, flavoring, spices and berries of choice in an amount that fits under 10g ECC. Fresh lemon mint is good in it with strawberries, for instance. Cinnamon is excellent with raspberries and blueberries. If you like it thicker, use frozen berries or add a couple ice cubes. If you like it thinner, add cold water (or cold coffee...I love berry-flavored coffee freezes!) Using cold or frozen Diet V8 splash, Tropical flavor, will give a plain yogurt or kefir shake a creamsicle flavor (cubes of frozen Diet V8 Splash will make it thicker.) And if you want to boost the protein even more, add a couple tablespoons of either almond butter or ricotta, cottage or farmer's dry curd cheese.

Hope this helps.

Gaelen, the reason I don't use kefir is that I've never seen it over here - and haven't decided if I want to go to the trouble of adding kefir grains to the menagerie of cultures in my kitchen. I think there are people on the Nourishing Traditions UK list who will send them out for the cost of postage.

I was going to ASK what Kifer was!!!!!! Thanks Gaelen! ~ I just haven't gotten too it...well...because....um...I'm spending so much time tracking down new information these days! This just hadn't made it to the top of my LIST yet!! lol That whole "Fat Cell Matabolism" thread bogged me down!!!! lol  :D I'm sure Gabe probably laughing his sides silly knowing full well I haven't YET managed to come up with a half way intelligent question to ask him yet!!!!! LOL

Gaelen, maybe we could come up with a special magic bullet recipe section? lol I use it to whip up my hidden valley ranch dressing and it does a MIGHTY fine job of it!!

I bought the "deal" off tv..and spent waaaaaay more then I needed too. I think it musta been the "old hag" lady with the two inch cigerette ashes hanging from her lips in her house coat on the informercial that appealed to me...LOL....anyways, one of the two bullets I bought died on me soon after I got it. (I bought two of them thinking I could put one in our trailer for camping.) I contacted the company, and they would replace it for nothing..plus an additional $10 to send it back to them... (so much for nothing!) but, I haven't followed through.

Then I saw you could buy them locally. I wonder if I could take it back to a store locally instead? Is that what you mean? I bet I could?...but, it would be sorta lying...but, then I could just show them my driver's license! ;) ....:D

kefir...kefir...kefir...got to find out more about that....am I a scat...or a vat...hum...definitely a scat...but?...hum....so many things to do, read...slowburn.....leptin resistant....hum....my mind is sooooooo busy these days....
