I think that one of the things that is crucial to maintaining your health gains/weight losses is absolute determination. When I look at our little group here - RealRuth, Shadow, Randy, Relief, Banshee and the rest - I see a group of very determined people (trying not to say "stubborn" ;)). I was reading a paragraph from Staying Power about the "Maintenance Mind-set" and the qualities that they were describing didn't just sound like a theory in a book - they sounded like the people here. We all have our different tactics and methods, but I think we have a common core of tenacity that keeps us from straying too far.

In my attempts to avoid saying "determination" too many times, I consulted the Chambers on-line thesaurus:

determination
n
1 RESOLUTENESS, tenacity, firmness, willpower, perseverance, persistence, purpose, resolve, backbone, steadfastness, single-mindedness, will, insistence, conviction, dedication, push, drive, stamina, moral fibre, strength of character, firmness of purpose formal fortitude colloq. guts, grit, stay the course, hang on like grim death, hold your ground, dig your heels in
Take your pick :).

If you've overindulged this holiday weekend, here's the extract from Staying Power that I was reading:

Maintaining your correction is the name of the game, but never forget that maintenance is a journey, not a destination. The road won't always be easy. Like all of us, you're human; you'll have ups and downs, slips and missteps, but we assure you that none will ever be unrecoverable.

...

Go back to the basics, plan and eat the prescribed meals, and carefully record your intake, exercise and progress. do it one day at a time, one meal at a time - if necessary, one bite at a time. Accept no excuses from yourself; never say you can't. You can - you already did. And remind yourself that no one has control of what you eat but you. No one.

We wish you the very best health and fitness from now on.

What's left for me to say?

Except that ... I originally started doing these weekly threads because I wanted some company as I started out in maintenance - but I don't want anyone else to feel they have to wait for me here. If you have maintenance thoughts/questions, please either raise them in a new thread, or volunteer for one (or more) of the weeklies.

My favorite is "hang on like grim death" :D! Thanks for a fun start to the week, Janet! The weekend went well - no hurdles, challenges or any other set backs. I pretty much just hodey-doed through it and thanks to the weather got in a lot of bonus physical activity. So no complaints or whines from me today :p.

Well, I am a Taurus, and stubborness is apparently a big part of my makeup. :p

Seriously, I think that the hardest part is making this a "mindset". Once I finally got there, while I may still do some tweaking here or there to get things optimal for me, the big stuff was no longer really a problem. This weekend I went to a favorite breakfast place with friends. Every time we go there, I'm tempted by the French toast, which used to be one of my favorite meals. Now, I do occasionally make French toast at home with low carb bread, but it just isn't as indulgent as doing so at a restaurant because it is quite a bit of work.

It was funny - my friends didn't want to go out because they figured the place would be packed. I told them that I thought it wouldn't because everyone would be home with their families for Easter, and I called - sure enough they didn't have a wait. While I was on the phone with them, I asked if they would be willing to make the French toast with my bread. No problem! So I got to "give in" to my temptation without going completely off plan. :D I did indulge just a bit and used real syrup instead of imitation stuff, but since it was my only indulgence, I didn't let myself feel guilty about it. I figure my total for the meal was about 35g, which isn't really much more than I usually have.

Basically, I guess what I'm saying is that even when I "go off" plan, it isn't a full scale carb fest for me, just a slight increase that makes it easy to tweak the rest of the day so I don't ever feel like I've totally fallen off the wagon. Plus my added exercise makes any indulence a lot easier to recover from. I have another friend who does low-carb and he does a LOT of weight lifting. He's gone from almost never eating high carb foods (before he started exercising) to needing to eat some so he doesn't lose too much weight!

That's actually my biggest challenge right now. The exercise is increasing my appetite, and I'm trying to find the balance that will still give me the increased nutrients/satiety I need without adding so much food that I don't lose the rest of the fat which is the goal of the exercise!

Did I get off the topic? I kinda started rambling! :o

My favorite is "hang on like grim death" :D!

Well, there are times when that's what it takes :(. But I'm glad your weekend wasn't one of them :).

I think the bonus of ending up and only working a half day on Friday helped immensely ;). That gave me time to get my chores done, plus some extra outside work, while still providing me some down time - especially since I didn't cook/prep as much as normal this weekend. Now, if I could just work a lot more short weeks :p!
