I got the results of my latest lab test. I have been on PP for 8 months, feel netter than ever, but I am perplexed by the numbers here are the numbers

------------------ Pre-PP------7/24/07-----11/15/07---------------

Fasting Glucose----128----------114--------113---expected better
Tot Chol.----------275----------269--------301---No good, no worry
HDL---------------37-----------43----------47----GOOD!
LDL---------------199----------208---------226---No Worry
Triglyceride--------197--------- 88!---------138---What happened!

I wonder why my Trig. went up. I wonder if it is related to the fact that when I had the test I had fasted for 24 hrs and it was about 1-hr after my workout, maybe my there wer extra triglycerides to replenish my energy.

Last test on 7/24/07 my Hg1C was 5.2--Normal. This time it wasn't tested. I am eating a bit more carbs now not much more, about 50-60 ECC most days, some days just <30 ECCs. I also, had a little bit of a carb binge on Monday 11/12/07, had some authentic Mexican tacos and burritos (hadn't had in more than 4 months) and chips.

My Blood Glucose goes up after a workout so I fast food and workouts for truer numbers.

"HDL---------------37-----------43----------47----GOOD!"

I'm always impressed by HDL climb since it's primary motivator is exercise.

lczeledoc...good ratios but some things do bear weatching.
Although typically slight total cholesterol and triglyceride and LDL rises on low carb are part of the pattern for certain people, and good ratios are the most important for evaluating cardiac health, continuously rising total and LDL cholesterol can be a sign of other issues which you and your docs should watch. In your panel, were your BUN/creatinine, ALT, AlkPhospatase all normal...or were they elevated as well? More important, have they trended upwards at each blood draw, or did they spike out of range on this one after being in range the last time?

Pretty much the only physical symptom that I had cancer, months prior to my actual diagnosis, was steadily rising total cholesterol over a three year period, with sudden LDL and triglyceride elevation despite having had good ratios and excellent total and individual numbers only four months before the spike. In 20-20 hindsight, my primary doc kicked himself for missing it...but it was subtle and I didn't really fit the profile for a potential cancer patient until you added in several other factors--family history of other cancers, my stress levels, etc. If the other results in your draws are falling into line, no worries...but if you are approaching your 40s, have any family history of breast/colon/prostate cancers or any other cancer risk factors, or have been under a lot of physical or emotional stress within the last six months, it's caution light time. You may still want to do some further checking because your total cholesterol numbers seem to be trending up and your triglycerides spiked.

And as Randy mentioned--for more accurate draws, fast from exercise as well as food prior to blood draws. Also, fasting longer is NOT necessarily better...if it's supposed to be an 18 hour fast, do that...not 24 hours. The baselines for the results are based on the prescribed fasting time +/- an hour...not +/- 6 hours.

Thanks Gaelen,

I had the BUN/creatinine, ALT, AlkPhospatase measured on the prior lab test (7/24/07) and were normal. This time the Dr. only ordered the BFG and Lipid tests. There is no history of cancer in my family, at least for the males. Have a couple of aunts who developed cancer in their late 60's. I have been under a lot of stress lately. My Dad has had colo-rectal issues after the 60's--I am 45. I think it is just the stress.
