Hello all,

You've all been such a great help in the past so I am hoping for more great answers.

Our baby is now 5 months old and working toward more solid foods. At out 4 month check up we had a little bit of a heated "discussion" with his doctor about cereals but I think I won. We tried the hard boiled egg yolks from "Nourishing Traditions," but he didn't like it. We have had success with organic applesauce (no sugar added) and mashed bananas. I feel like protein is missing though. Any other suggestions for new foods to add? We are going to try the eggs again and maybe some organic yogurt.

Also, we must be doing something right, he is in the 95th percentile for height and weight, almost 19 lbs at 5 months! Right from birth every has mentioned that he is the strongest baby they have ever seen (and 1 aunt is a pede's nurse!).

Thanks Again,
Dave

With our 13 mo. old daughter we started feeding her our own home made "Gerber" style food when she was 6 month old. We put pieces of cooked beef or chicken and steamed veggies in a blender. She loved it. 3 months later she got tired of it. Since then she eats mostly what we eat, meat, eggs (doesn't like them much, unless cooked in butter), veggies, fruit, greens, cheese, yoghurt, milk. She is in the 95 percentile for height, but only in the 65 percentile for weight. She eats a lot, All my other children wer huskier (as their parents!), but this one seems leaner. I think it has to do with my wife eating a much healthier diet when she was pregnant.

Hi Dave -

I can only speak from my experience. I have three boys 4,2, and 1. When I started transitioning them I used a food grinder for everything. Actually, I make my husband grind the food because it takes some muscle, but you can get the food like baby food. I've done chicken, beef roast and such. Sometimes I need to add some liquid to it, but it mixes very well.

Yogurt has been a big hit too. My boys have also enjoyed peaches and pears - from where they got this, I don't know! Not from me, but they love them. They grind well too.

OH, I also made my own homemade veggies for baby food. Cooked them, put them in the blender, then in ice cube trays. Froze it all. Then I used them as baby. Very easy, and portable for those times away!

Hope that helps. Again, this is only from my experience of what we have done in the past!

Enjoy your Little Man!

We also transitioned right from breast milk to real whole food that the family ate. We cooked plain, like steamed or baked, and offered the baby soft versions of everything (some things have to be ground.) Adults could add salt and pepper and spicy things.

Regina Wilshire in her blog archive, shows some food for her toddler I think (or young school age?) It shows how a child can eat without the cereals and refined starches and baby food. Very cool!

You guys sound like you're having a blast doing it right.
