Who is all here??
At the starting line today we have....
coffee, eggs and venison
A quality upper body workout with weights
2 glasses of water so far.
I've been up since 4 am. I was exhausted and hit the hay at 9 pm. I just could not sleep anymore.
Now for the brain.....

A little motivation for today:

Champions get up one more than the times they've been knocked down.

Champions give their all -no matter what the score.

Champions do what's right even when it hurts.

Champions know that winning isn't necessarily measured by the finial score( or scale)

Champions take a stand for what is right even when they stand alone.

Champions look at every challenge as an opportunity.

Champions make those around them better.

Champions dedicate themselves to prepare for success.

How are you preparing for success for this challenge?

My starting weight this morning was 223 and I'm ready to go.
I did 30 minutes of curls and planks this morning and will play volleyball at lunch.

No breakfast or lunch but a great dinner planned for this evening (lamb and spaggetti squash along with some form of yogurt/berry dessert. I'll possibly have a can of tuna before leaving work today.
2 liter water jug on my desk and the kettle is boiling for a hot drink as well.

Preparations for the challenge ... I ordered Taubes new book, Good Cals/Bad Cals along with The Cholesterol Myth. As well I've joined the work gym again for 2 4 month periods to take me through to June so I work out during the winter. I'm reading up more on IF as well and will look for more interesting ways to meet the mental portion of the challenge.

Who's next?

I guess I'll kick in.

I am here. I forgot my shake this AM. Have decided to skip breakfast and go through to lunch. Probably not the best idea I've ever had, but I'm not particularly hungry right now, or at any point today. Am feeling a little sick, but that might be the carbage of the past week creeping up on me. Whenever I used to have a big sugar blow late in the day, I would get a scratchy throat in the AM. This to go with the incredible acid reflux I used to have. I did not have reflux last week (or last night), but my throat is raw today. I dunno if that's carbs of that I've been hanging around my sick wife. At any rate, I'm at work, I'm skipping meals 1 & 2, and I'm not hungry, so that's the state of the union. I did workout this am. My core will be complaining. I've decided to simplify a little in terms of workout. Just the core moves on MFW, and the T days get intervals.

Reading Taubes. It's a bit of a slog. But interesting. Still, not sure how the LF camp came to ascendancy against everyone's better judgment. I've read most of the story, but it still seems so, well, out there. Especially for the 70's, a time of greater literacy than today.

Here I am. Today's weight 177: 7 pounds from goal. I may make it by the end of the year. It's been over 20 years since I have weighed this "little."
Main measurment method: Daily scale weights
Min Pro: 84 Carb less than 30
Water (plain or carbonated) min 64 ounces/day
Walk 15 to 20 minutes each day on uneven ground or 30 minutes on tarmac; continue bar bell exercises for arms qod; try to remember to practice Tai Chi moves qod
Mind power: reading something (just finished Taubes book and may have to reread some chapters) and at least one Sudoku medium difficulty till I run out of them then progress to hard.
Simplify: How I wish I could give up weighing and measuring everything I eat and entering it in the computer program but without these controls I will gain. So.....try to make some meals habitual in terms of portion size.

Lynn - I'm here :D! And I have a champion kind of day planned :).

Off to a good start with my exercise done, mental challenge complete (although there will be more yet today as I'm addicted to puzzles), a protein-packed breakfast in, meals planned for the rest of the day, and water is half-way done.

Good morning. I started out my day with three eggs and a couple slices of bacon. According to my calculations that's about 24grams of protein. I'm thinking I'll have to increase the amount for my breakfast meal. So far I've had about 32oz of water, well on my way to my goal of 96oz per day. I haven't done any exercises yet today but will after work.

Edit: Forgot to include my weight. I was 318.5lbs this morning.

I'll check in again later.

Good morning everyone!

It's a great day to start the challenge! I am about to go up and get in my exercise, but wanted to check in and see how everyone was doing.

Today is a busy one for me, starting in five minutes with the treadmill and weights, then breakfast, then off to an appt and a few errands tying up loose ends in preparation for a trip to Miami on Wed for 5 days. I'm going to help a friend celebrate her birthday on Saturday and am taking two days for myself to walk the beach and think and to look at South Beach architecture. I do love Miami. The weather and water change every hour. They're like theatre. I am so grateful for the challenge because it will keep my on my program even though half the week I'll be in a hotel.

I will also pick up a puzzle book while I'm out so I can fulfill my mental part of this month's challenge.

Hope everyone has a teriffic day!

We get the paper everyday but Saturday, and in it is a Jumble, Sudoku, two crosswords (one is the NYTimes), and a Whatzit. Today I have almost completed the Jumble (can't quite figure out the answer and one of the four words) and the sudoku is an easy one that I'm flying on.

I will workout today-probably around noon. Then tonight I have a meeting then home to watch another episode of The War. I missed it last night because I had to watch Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. But I taped it so I will finish watching it at some point. If you guys aren't watching The War...I HIGHLY recommend it...Ken Burns did a FANTASTIC job!

For those of you who have ADHD, do you struggle getting things done if you don't have a list in front of you? I am able to accomplish so much, but only if I have a list or a reminder on my computer. If I don't have something in front of me telling me what to do, then I can't think of ANYTHING to do-my mind goes BLANK, so I get nothing done...and this is getting worse as I get older...
I go to the doctor tomorrow and want to discuss it with her, but I feel kind of silly!

List is sometimes helpful. Sometimes not so much. The big problem for me is distractability. If I have a list, it can minimize how many distractions I give in to. But really, it's about cutting down the things that will draw my attention away from the task at hand.

In business school, when I was unaware of my ADHD (I was aware, I just didn't know what it was), caffeine helped a lot. Also, a gantt chart of my remaining work for the day, week, course, and semester. That saved my ass and earned my MBA.

Ammy
10-01-2007, 11:19 AM
yes, distractability...
That's HUGE for me...I can walk down the hall to do two things...get a drink and a fedex envelope.
I get the drink, say hi to someone, then complete forget to get the envelope-and I mean forget I even have a package to mail-and not even SEE it on my desk until hours later when I happen across it...I feel absolutely STUPID that I can't keep things in my head for 3 minutes!!!

I'm in. Mixed feelings right now - maybe just on my pitty pot today. I was at 156 on Sunday. My weight is fluctuating between 155 and 157. I'm having trouble keeping my calories down. It doesn't work for me to just count carbs. If I eat til satisfied even with low carbs, I will eat too many calories to lose weight. I put on one pound last week.

I decided to go back to eating two meals a day. Sort of a modified IF (16/8). My eating window will be between 12 and 8 every day. It's 10:45 here and my tummy is pretty rumbley.

My goals for October will be 60 to 70 grams protein, 30 ECC between my two meals. I'm also gonna calorie cycle - Mon-Thurs 1,000 calories (500 per meal), and Fri-Sun 1,500 calories. That averages to a little over 1200 calories a day. For me, so close to goal, I believe that's what I'm gonna have to do. I don't like it, but it's just the way it is. I'm gonna have to be hungry sometimes, maybe a lot of the time. **Sigh**

For those of you who have ADHD, do you struggle getting things done if you don't have a list in front of you?
I don't have ADHD (unless it can become evident later in life) but I have old-timers disease, which has similar manifestations! The worst part is that DH (who DOES have it) is more distracted than I am, to the point that he forgets to make notes. I have a task list at work always and one at home on the stove hood when I absolutely must follow a schedule. I am constantly doing the "remember one thing, forget the other" routine. It's frightening when I really consider it.
I go to the doctor tomorrow and want to discuss it with her, but I feel kind of silly!
Never think it's silly. There are lots of ways to cope and if she doesn't know any, ask her to recommend someone who does. It's a real condition, and the stress factor doesn't make it any easier. Have you googled "adult adhd"? There's lots of good stuff out there.

Hey, it's Monday. I forgot my dinner (got class tonight) so I'm going to have to get a salad from Subway across the street. It was pouring this morning. I had to take DH's truck because my car is being worked on today. My boss (who I think is ADHD) got a nasty email from the Nemesis in the Business Office first thing and came flying into my office demanding that I imediately produce the solution in five minutes.:paranoid::peeved: Where could it go but up? Turns out the Nemesis was WRONG!

Breakfast was a coffee/dark cocoa shake. Lunch was pepperoni chips and cream cheese. Not the finest or most satisfying, but it works. I'm drinking water and have walked a quarter mile so far today.

Amy--

Don't feel silly at all. ADHD is a real thing and I can tell you mine has gotten worse as I've gotten older. My brothers have been on medication for it for years, but even though I was diagnosed, I resisted it. Earlier this year, I found myself really "distracted" and unable to focus on my work, let alone life stuff, and so my doctor prescribed ritalin. I don't take it often because I hate taking any kind of medication. But if I have a deadline and seem to be unable to focus... and I don't mean a next day deadline, but a major work deadline a few weeks away, I will take it everyday for a week or two and it HELPS. The speedy feeling I first got when taking it went away and now when I take it, I am able to simply FOCUS and get my work done. It's a very odd disease. Sometimes it makes me feel helpless. That's when I know I need to take ritalin for a few days to get back on track. I seem then to be able to focus for a month. Odd.

Do not feel silly talking to your doctor. if you have been diagnosed... and the test is very easy... try the medication just to see if it works for you. I cannot tell you how much relief I have experienced just knowing that what I have has a label and if I need help, I can get it.

I googled adult ADHD and mostly what I read was that typically you have symptoms as a child.
I don't remember my childhood...I have lost everything going back to high school-and that is fading. So I have no idea if I showed symtoms or not. I do know that school was HORRIBLE for me...especially history and geography. They would talk and I couldn't hear/focus on a word they said...I was great at math-although I feel like I'm losing that as well.
I guess I always just thought I had a terrible memory, but lately reading some of the posts about ADHD by Max and Hawk I am feeling like I can relate so much.
I've decided it's important enough to ask about...no matter if I feel silly or not.

Good! Most adults find out they've had it all along and don't realize it until their children are diagnosed.

There are times I think maybe I do have it. I can get really scattered, and it's usually a product of stress or low sleep, so that might also be an explanation for me. I've lost a lot of my childhood too, but I don't know, really, if that's normal or not.

Amy have you had a surgery in the past few years requiring an anesthetic (epidural or general)? There is some research relating to this.
I know of two people going through similar experiences and both relate it to an anesthetic during surgery.
If so, I'll ask one for any related research he has nd send it. Since the beginning of the loss it has left him even more prone to similar drugs and he will lose track of a whole day just from the local freezing at a dentist's office.

WEIRD...
Surgeries?? Let's see...

1/04 - leg surgery (removal of painful vericose veins-part hereditary, part morbid obesity for most of my life)
10/04 - partial hysterectomy (6inch tumor attached to uterus)
10/05 - circumpherential abdomioplasty (skin reduction from weight loss)
7/06 - more skin reduction (skin removed from sides of torso)
2/07 - lypo touch-up, not put under but pretty numbed up (he left some lumps after last surgery, so he fixed them)
7/07 - same thing...final touch-up, not put under

So, in the last year, no real surgeries...but before that, holy cow yes!!

And it does seem to be worse in the last few years.
I joke that it's about not having a uterus-I must have stored my vocabulary/memory there.
Or that I'm just getting old (I'm 36).

But I'm really bothered by it...

"Or that I'm just getting old (I'm 36)."

Wait 'til you hit the Big Leagues. I never forget a face but names ... "Excuse me ... I can't remember your name.":( :D:D:D

The drugs most commonly causing memory loss (Long and short term) are General anesthetics such as halothane, isoflurane, and fentanyl.

Most links suggest tests for memory loss and most medical responses run like ... It is certainly possible that your anesthetic may have lingering effects on your mental function, including memory. Studies are revealing that, particularly in the elderly, postoperative cognitive deficit (POCD) is probably a real issue. Unfortunately it is hard to know whether it is the anesthetic medicines, or the stress of surgery that accounts for these changes. The stress of surgery involves things like nutrition, tissue breakdown and repair, sleep patterns, immune function and mood, pain, and interaction between medications. All these factors can in turn affect your thinking and memory and are all things that should be addressed now to make sure you have the best chance at a full recovery in mind, body and spirit.

One Medical link even states ...
I've read that anesthesia can have an impact on memory in elderly patients. My mother is also taking Vytorin, Glucophage, and Monopril.

Can we expect any recovery of memory function? How likely is it that the anesthesia is the cause of the recent deterioration?

Thank you for your help.
-----Answer-----
Anesthesia is not a cause of long term memory loss. We give certain drugs that can give you amnesia for recent events (particularly around the time of surgery) but these should not affect earlier (or later) memories. The anesthesia may make her forgetful for several days post surgery but the like cause of your mother's memory problems is probably related to her long convalescence. Whether there will be a return to pre-surgery days is unknown. The best thing you can do is supportive by keeping her mind active. While there are no guarantees, it certainly can't hurt.

The above differs quite a bit with the general consesus, that Anesthesia can definitely cause memory loss in some patients. As well some drugs cause interactions with recent use of prescription and non-prescription drugs.

Hope this helps. I would definitely address the issue directly with your doctor. As time passes we definitely lose some details of past events but there are some that we never lose and end up holding forever.

Ammy

I will address it...and I won't forget to remind her of the past surgeries.

I'm here. I'm starting the month at 151. I've been wavering between 149 and 152 for the last week. I'm on target protein and carb wise today. I got some walking in this morning, though not enough to say I've exercised today. Mental challenges today have been trying to outguess the network and public computer access software today. I think it's winning. We upgraded today our public computer access software (SAM) and the network has frequently come to a grinding halt or at least a very s-l-o-w stall. Need I say the public hasn't been amused? This is the first time I have even had an opportunity to even log on. And I have stopped writing at least 3 times with more computer problems. Well, I'm just getting punished for not listening to my mother who told me to marry a rich man and learn to play bridge.

I will get my actual plan for the month into some written form, but I have a feeling that it won't be this evening.

Well, I've had only about 70grams of protein today. Not sure how I can make it to 105grams. I definitely will need to have more protein for breakfast tomorrow. I might do a protein mix drink tonight that will give me another 20g but that also has 20g of carbs. I'd still be under 40g of carbs if I do it so I think I will. I had a nice Chef's Salad for dinner tonight. I did exercise this afternoon when I got home from work.

evening, everyone!

Had my annual with skin doc, (all fine) so no popping in at lunch - which was a HUGE chef's salad, dressing on the side, which DH & I had some for dinner and I'll finish it for lunch tomorrow.

Oh, before I forget, weighed in at 166.6 on the "evil" scale and 163.8 on the "other" scale. I sometimes get compulsive about things and apparently this will now be one - I must get on both scales.

Dinner, was steak and green beans and salad.

got in my physical exercise and I am in pain:D

got in mental exercise, too - a Sudoku, 1 small puzzle, 1 Sunday easy puzzle, 1 partial hard Saturday puzzle.

Hey, everyone...glad to see you all 'challenging' October!

I started this month at 186...aiming for 80g protein, and between 40-50g ECC daily. My beverage of choice is water--usually not a problem unless it gets cool, and then my water intake tends to drop. Because of a herniated disc, my daily physical exercise is limited to the back exercises and stretching moves the PT has prescribed (abdominal contractions, knee raises and squeezing a ball between my knees while contracting my lower abdominals) -- however, I do have to do them twice daily, every day.

Today was a solid yes--day 1 perfect on plan.
My mental exercise was working through a barking dog issue with a friend and the cardigan corgi rescue dog she's fostering...that's a puzzle! ;)
Breakfast was a cinnamon hazelnut mocha shake, lunch was a bacon, egg, tomato, pesto and cheese omelette with a toasted low carb wrap, and dinner was a coffee-vanilla shake--too tired to eat more after breaking down camp and driving home and then unloading the truck...but the truck is (nearly) all unloaded, the dogs exercised and I've nearly caught up on email.

I've got a history of intracerebral hemorrhage...so in my case, ADHD isn't involved at all and there's no medication they can give me that will improve my memory issues. I can completely relate to the distractibily stories. I cope by using the alarms on my PC, my PDA, and my phone to keep me on track, and lists in my PDA to be my focus points. If I didn't have little electronic pop-up reminders, I'd lose track of every facet of my life. ;)

Hey Feelix--

183... excellent!! Keep that up! I know you can. That's why these challenges are so terrific... and why I've missed this board... they work. You show up everyday, some days feeling motivated and some days not. But because of the rules we have agreed to and the comraderie and support of our challenge mates, we find the strength to do well and to keep going.

You have every right to be pleased. Now the trick is to keep moving forward, and from your attitude, I believe that you will. So let's make it to Day 30 together. Fitter, leaner, and heathier. And happier than we were on Day One.

Have a good sleep.

It would be better to print it out since you can mark a square with 2 numbers lightly (like if I know it is a 5 or a 6) but I did yesterday's online by clicking the square and then entering the number. I haven't done one in a year and it took almost 40 minutes to do the "Easy" one.:o:redface:

I don't think this will be my regular "mental" Challenge although I'll fit a few in each week.

I pulled a no today.

It was a shorting on the protein. I'm gonna take that, since I wasn't hungry all day. I woke up mildly sick. By 2 PM, I was pretty sick, and by the time I got home from work, I was ready for the consumption ward. I ate a little, but well, didn't make the protein. Carbs were fine (not even close to 40). Did my Sudoku. About 4 of them.

Am still sick today. Am at work, but only to get my time card signed. Will go home and rest, again.

Later.
