I've come accross a website, and in particular this page by this Dr John Mcdougall
http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2006nl/sept/sugar.htm
I think it's good to see the other side sometimes, and this bloke does seem to be way over the other side. I've checked a couple of his refernces and they don't seem to back up his claims or don't seem to have much weight behind them.
I was wondering if anyone knows of this character, and would be interseted in responses to some of his claims.
Cheers,
Al
I was on his diet for 6 years and it ruined my health, caused me to gain weight for the first time in my life, made my cholesterol Higher, raised my blood sugar and gave me high blood pressure. My sister turned me on to him when my cholesterol was 202.She now denounces him. 3 of us sisters all gained weight in our stomachs. My two other sisters had gall bladders removed. We all struggle with our wieght and health now.
If I could live my life over again, those 6 years would definately be changed. I was hard core NO FAT. I am the exact opposite now. My father had a stroke 7 years ago and my mother found PP books in a book store while searching for answers. Dads blood work is perfect now and his doctors think that PP saved his life. It is enough for me.My mom is amazing in her strictness of the PP diet.
As Michelle on this board says..sugar does not cause diabetes..carbs do. She is a diabetic and she checks her blood sugar often. Sugar is also carbs. My doc thinks sugar should be regulated like cocaine and treated as a controlled substance.
Come work in with me at the foot doctors office and see the people coming in with diabetic foot ulcers who are dealing with open sores for years and face amputation. See the effects of sugar.

Speaking as a type-2 diabetic, that guy scares me to death. I have been so much healthier on a low-carb diet (not just PP) that I almost can't find the words to tell you.
I was on the train to heart trouble, limb aputation, blindness and the doctor was starting to talk to me about drugs when I found Protein Power. Now my bloodwork is excellent, my blood sugar is normal and I'm working on the weight. My doctors (all of them, actually) are ecstatic.
Yes, we're hard-wired for sugar, but our early ancestors didn't have access to sugar every minute of the day. That got way out of control for me. Poison!

And you'd be surprise to know that we're more wired to be attracted to fat than sugar as an interesting study showed last year. Our taste buds have special receptors in their surface that have affinity for fat, which according to some, could be a very advantageous for survival in ancient times, as individuals would be drawn to fatty foods (which provide more energy and for longer time, besides helping with the increase in the size of the brain along the use of tools, etc), thus making sure they had a source of energy to draw from in times of scarcity.

Actually, I'm not suprised at all,I believe that through most of our evolution, humans, once we stood upright and learnt to hunt, would have eaten predominately meat and fat from animal sources. We would have followed and hunted the herds of grazing animals, only eating seed, nuts and edible plants in season.
Do have a link to the study you mention please?

The paper is from the Journal of Clinical Investigation and the PDF file is free for download.

I am, Gabe. Although I already knew that on some level, I suppose, because I don't feel compelled to eat pure sugar, just when it's mixed with fat. :p

I don't know....When I was a child, I would sneak to eat sugar. I would eat it by the spoonfuls out of the sugar bowl. Or, if I was around the coffee stuff (away from home) that had the sugar cubes, I would eat those. I loved them. Other than making a butter sandwich and putting sugar on it, I don't remember just wanting fat. I have always liked lots of mayo on sandwiches.
I used to eat butter. Or I'd skim the cream off the gallon jar of milk that the neighbor delivered. If I have cream in the house I still want to drink it.
I love bacon,egg yolks,prime rib etc...

I was on the McDougall diet for a couple of years and it wrecked my health. My blood sugar spiked and crashed so I needed naps to make it through the day and I blacked out twice (I'd never fainted before in my life!) once while brushing my teeth, so I actually saw the colour drain from my face before I dropped.
I followed the McDougall BB faithfully, and one day a ''troll'' recommended Protein Power (was that you, hawk?). The thrashing this ''troll'' got was pretty fanatical. In contrast, people on the original PPbb sounded sane. I switched from a high-carb low-fat vegetarian to low-carb high-fat carniverous diet overnight and felt fantastic only 3 days later. After 30 years of yo-yoing, I had finally found the right WOE for my body.
