Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all.
~ Dale Carnegie
Do I have what it takes to keep trying even when it seems I’m not accomplishing anything? Where else would I go? I already know what will happen if I quit!
Even if I'm in the doldrums, I'm better off following the PP way of eating. My bloodwork is excellent and the weight will follow in due time. Races are for horses and I'm busy living life. :D

OH GIRLFRIEND...THAT QUOTE AND ME...sista YOU are a PREACHIN' to THEE CHOIR!!!! :D
Regardless of the outcome, I happen to have found my inner "try'er"...and I know I have to count on her for LIFE!!!!

Best wishes for your surgery, Carol.
Another nice quote. I'm not struggling with eating these days, but sometimes carrying on working on core & back strength and stability when it just seems to keep on falling apart regardless, is difficult. But, as people have said about PP when their weight wasn't going down as fast as they want, what's the alternative? Eating junk isn't going to do a better job of fixing your weight and health. Having weak, stiff joints won't be better for me than strong, supple ones. So, I'll fetch water, chop wood.

Great quote, Carol.
As Missy says, you are preachin' to the choir in me!
I do get frustrated with me when I get off plan or when I am not losing as I think I should, however, when I add carbs by carb creep, my weight creeps up as well, dispropriotionate to the carbage I ate, I might add.
Thoughts and prayers for your surgery.
Snacks, lunch packed for today.
Will check in later.

Morning everyone!
I "slept in" today - 6:30 instead of 5:30 and no exercise this morning. Hopefully will fit some in (around shopping ;) ) this afternoon. Even getting up at 6:30 was hard, which is not "normal" for me. I think I've just been trying too hard to do the early thing and it's just not me. This isn't the first time (or the 2nd or the 3rd) that I've tried this either. Oh well.
Carol I hope all goes well with you today. My FIL had his 2nd one done not too long ago, no glasses for the first time in I dunno how many years other than for reading. I've never even seen a picture of him with no glasses, so we all think he looks so different. :) Will say some extra prayers for you today.
Missy I'm glad your 1st day went well. You really have lit a spark in me of some sort. I was telling my youngest that I was thinking of taking a painting class or something and she thought that was "cool".
Janet I hope your back feels better soon.
Sherry and Claudette good to see you both today!
Now on to topic ....
Great quote! Something I need to remind myself of, especially since I really haven't had any weight loss the past few months (or I gain and lose the same 3-4 pounds). Giving up definitely won't help, have to keep at it.
Think Happy Thoughts Today!

Good morning, Claudette, Becca :).
Becca, thanks for the concern - my back isn't actually hurting at the moment, it just feels very fragile. It starts to pinch if I lift anything much, or stand too long, or overdo it in any way, but as long as I'm very careful, it doesn't hurt. I'd really like to get to the stage where I don't feel that any careless movement, or the monthly wash of hormones is going to upset it all again. But it doesn't actually hurt, so Amy and Karole can have the available back sympathy for today!
My husband went with me to do the weekly food shop this morning - he pushed the trolley and carried the bags, so I didn't hurt my back again, but the shopping took twice as long as usual ;).
I'll be getting our lunch in a few minutes (he's working at home today), then going off for my yoga lesson this afternoon.

I had a boss once who said, "The harder you work the luckier you get"--have to tie that with the quote from Carol this morning, trying does make things happen! And good luck on the surgery, let us know!
Back in the saddle at work today after being gone the last two, always things to do when you are away that you didn't plan on but for the most part it appears quiet here, and gosh that is the first time I can say that since Christmas, it has been just a whirlwind and in my business that is not good.
Glad to hear everyone is doing better...Mitra on your back and stress, I hear ya loud and clear. My neck muscles pull when I am stressed and it can get my whole back out of whack, always my first little sign that I am stressing about something...hmmm better make an apppointment with the chiropractor  today!!

Up and at em today.
Cannot comment on Dale Carnegie. DW worked for the company for about a year. No hard feelings, just real bored and she could never buy into the culture of positivism there. DW is my balance, no doubt.
Worked out (hard), am tired. Have been on fire (feel like my temp is high and my motor turned to 11) since about 11AM yesterday. Had to turn AC under 70 to get to sleep. Slept okay. Up today. And on fire again. Either I have a fever (and the only prescription is More Cowbell) or my metabolism has finally relit after it's Italian vacation. Either way, I'm looking for some results now.
Have a trip to Minneapolis this weekend. The one I had to give away my Rush tickets to go see. I go back and forth on merely not wanting to go and resenting having to go. I will be 100% on plan though. Well, maybe 90%. Have to go to the mountain on this one.
Be rock stars and Rock on.
MAX,,You're having my hot flashes!! Maybe they are not hotflashes.
Got my beast stickers all week. Staying on plan. Tuesday and Wednesday I am not home from 8 am till 10 pm.
Today I have dental Appt and then picking up grandkiddies and taking them to the beach for the day. I hear storms are coming..We'll go early and leave if they happen.

Off for my first day!!!!!!!
WHO's having surgery??? CAROL?!!!!!!!! Did I miss something?!!!!!
Karole

Hawk, I was wondering if anyone has been using their stickers. Of course I have a long blank spot on my calendar from when we were gone, but it looks pretty good and well filled for the days I have been at home. Very colorful.
Hi everyone, this place has sure been busy already this a.m. Not even 8 oclock here and look at all the posts.
My back does feel much better this morning. The Soma I took for back spasms did the trick. It still tweaks me when I do some things, but not like yesterday at all. I am afraid to do my resistance exercises tho, don't want to push it . I will walk instead and then see how it goes for tomorrow. Hope to hear from Amy soon and that her back is doing better too.
Carol, good luck with your eye surgery, I have heard lots of good results from folks who had that done. They can see again without glasses and just do great. Our prayers and good wishes are with you today.
I'm off to try a walk. I think a friend is going to go too. Hope so.
Hey all,
Thought I'd check in before I take off to go to the DR. If I don't come away from that appt without a prescription for a muscle relaxer...well...I just will refuse to leave the office:eek: :tear:  !!
Max? You're coming to Mpls THIS weekend??!! It's GAY PRIDE weekend! Don't be surprised if everywhere you go there are almost naked men and women without bra's on when they really SHOULD be wearing support...oh wait...that is what they will be showing on the news...the CUTE DRESSED people NEVER get shown  so don't watch for me  :o :D !

Hey, choir! I'm sneaking in here because the Geezer turned his back on me! He'll have a fit if he finds out I'm not relaxing in my chair! Surgery went well and I was home two hours after I left the house this morning. Got a clear patch over my right eye so I don't accidentaly bump it or rub it. It's a bit fuzzy, but already better than the left eye, which is a miracle.
Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes. I'd like to reply to everybody personally, but that would be pushing the envelope right now. I'll be back later today. Love you all!

You could always skip wearing the bra.
I'm all for gay pride. Just not in favor of parades for anything. Used to live on a parade and race route in Los Angeles and every damn one shut us in on three sides and made driving three blocks into an hour long, 3 mile journey. so, I'm naturally thrilled.
On the upside, I think we'll be out in the suburbs by Golden Valley for most of the time. Exciting.

ME?? Without a bra??? You couldn't PAY me enough!!
I don't know ANY woman who has lost over 100lbs that would willingly go braless...unless they've had them 'fixed'!!
On the UP side...I received my packet from the National Weight Loss Registry-now I have to get them some info.
AND my health insurance is doing a weight loss study-they're looking for people (who use Health Partners Insurance) who have lost 10% of their body weight in the last year. They are looking to see if/how people maintain their weightloss.
My largest weight in the last year was 218, so I have to get to 198-199ish in order to participate. I have six months to lose the 3-4lbs I need to.
I can do it!
BUT can I maintain at that weight???????

Karole, I'm glad you feel better!
Yup, Missy, you're in the dark again! :D

Yes, the Dr came through with FLYING colors...Flexural is IN my system, and WORKING!
She said, from now on just CALL ME if you need something like this...(I had never met her before). She is now my primary physician (even though she is an RN and a CPN).
I think I LOVE her!!!

I'm so pleased, Amy. But curious too - what is flexural?
LisaS

I think she meant Flexeril (http://www.drugs.com/flexeril.html) which is a prescription muscle relaxant.
Mitra

Thank you, Lisa - that would be why googling didn't get me the answer :). It looks like pretty heavy duty stuff!
sorry...spellcheck always makes me change it to FlexUrAl...and I forget to FIX it!
Yes, Flexeril...generic is Cyclobenzaprine...I can only take 1/2 when at work because it makes me too sleepy otherwise!! It's time to take another one...feeling some pain again. I do thank everything holy that I am able to go to work though...I just have to be careful in what I do (remember to MOVE around, don't pull open heavy doors, use my feet to move my work chair instead of pulling on my desk...stuff like that).
The summer solstice party we were going to tonight was just cancelled due to rain, I can't say I'm upset about it...I am ready for one more night of relaxation!!

This has a horribly familiar ring to it . Every time I have to pick something up from the floor I feel as if I'm modelling for one of those "how to lift safely" videos . I just would love to be able to move without planning it in advance, and sit with my legs crossed :(.
Apart from the ongoing whinge :o , I'm all done for today. Food & extras all completed  .

Goodness... chatty group today. :D
Carol glad to hear you've done well with the surgery.
Amy WTG on the doctor and drugs! ;)
Shadow's leaving for a week? Guess that means I have extra time for my project. :D
I went by Michael's today. May never set foot in that store again I'm so disgusted with the lack of customer service. I found the classroom. Found the calendar of "events". Nothing on the calendar about the painting, other than what was pre-printed. All the classes were cake decorating and beading. Stood at customer service, no help. Someone finally walked over there and then started calling folks over from another register to cash them out. I guess because I didn't have a basket (aka trolley - for Janet) or things in my hands to PAY FOR I didn't get service. I think I was there a good 15-20 minutes. Oh well.
Did have better luck at Target. I think I went into the dressing rooms about 5 or 6 times, each time fully loaded with the max allowed. Same old problem, fits the rear, too big in the waist. Or they were "low riders" which fit (no waist problems there) but made me feel like I was losing my pants anyway. Found one pair of shorts that fit but showed too much of my thighs (yuck!). I gotta say, dressing room mirrors really don't lie! Extra motivation that's for sure. I did manage to come out with one pair of denim crops/capris that were only a little big in the waist and one pair of longer shorts that were passable. Have to make sure I wear very long shirts (so bought a couple extra big) with them to hide the fit problems. Got a bunch of other things for other folks as well, but I'm pleased with my purchases. Will see how I feel after Saturday when I wear them to the beach and spend the day walking around.
Now I"m off to mow the yard. Say a prayer that my asthma co-operates. That will also have to count as my exercise for today.
Catch y'all later!

Hey, do you do that "old man grunt" when you do something that hurts your back... :suspicious:
I have been working on biting my lip instead of grunting...grunting makes me feel OLD, and with a birthday coming up in a few days...I don't want ANYTHING to make me feel ANY OLDER:mad:   !!
Amy...You mean that if I don't wear a bra..people will think I am......well...I'm not.. but is that a common thing?? No bra?? I hate bras and detest them and if I can wear something where is does not show, I will go without.
Let's put it this way...if they sag down and hang out the bottom of your shirt, and you're PROUD of it? Then yes, you are probably an old lesbian!!
(Listen to me making fun of my own kind...not very PC of me, is it...then again, *I'M* not very PC)
Have you ever seen South Park? They have a teacher that replaced Mr Hat...she has the bra-less problem...what a HOOT, that show!!

Wow, that makes a neat avatar, Hawk. Looking good and full I see. But I expected that !! Mine has a big blank look in the middle but is doing good on the top and bottom.
Love the quote, Carol. I need to remember that the small things count.
I blew it today. Oh, well. I just need to keep trying. I'm trying to figure out what can I do for the rest of my life. So, I gave the kids animal crackers today and thought, I'll probably have animal crackers sometime in my life, so I ate a few. What I forgot was...I'm allergic to flour!!!! DUH! There is a REASON I looked into PP. Oh, yeah, the flour thing ISN'T AN OPTION!!! When will that sink in???
So, I had a taco salad for dinner. I'll rebound again. I need to stick with it. Even if the weight isn't melting off, I feel so much better staying away from bread/flour stuff.
Maybe I need to work on putting some fruit in the mix.

sometimes carrying on working on core & back strength and stability when it just seems to keep on falling apart regardless, is difficult.
*falls out of woodwork* I totally hear you on that. I just had to jump in quickly with info that your regular MD types will never give you! No matter how strong you make the muscles, it'll never fix the problem if you've screwed up a ligament/tendon. Most often you'll end up with the back pain that gets mostly better, and even seems like it's "fixed"- until you do something *way out there* like... say.... bending over to pick up a kleenex or something. Of course, it also turned out in my case that back spasms on one side of my lower back was being caused by a blown *hip*. Go figure.
Ligaments rarely heal all the way without help, and are prone to re-injury. In fact, while chiropractic will put you back in place, it can aggravate a ligament/tendon injury by stretching it when they do the manipulation. (been there, done that... seriously, at $50 for a 15 min appointment, the least it could do was hold for more than 24 hours!). Then, of course, to support the joint, your muscles spasm because the ligaments can't hold by themselves. D'oh! Relax the muscles too much, and things pop out again...
Anyway, I'll stop babbling and just put in the link.
http://www.prolotherapy.com/
Good stuff, permanant fix- seems to be working for me (at least up until I ran out of money- food and utilities taking 1st place now). Standard disclaimer: I'm not a doc, can't give med advice, YMMV, to each their own, yadda yadda yadda...
Stormy
PS- Amy- if Flexeril knocks you too loopy, and if you haven't already tried it, Skelaxin worked well for me. (see disclaimer ;) ) (Though there were a few days where nothing but Percoset was my friend- and I don't "do" pharmaceuticals routinely).

06-21-2007, 05:48 PM
Stormy, I agree with you totally. My doctor goes after the muscles and ligaments and insists that I do stretches. When I don't, I make very little progress. He's doing accupuncture on the tendinitis, which is helping. He also prescribes Flexeril, but it knocks me out for 8-12 hours. Skelaxin is shorter duration but gives me bad dreams. I don't like either one. They do work, though.
Regarding the ape-like grunt: (you guys get on the wierdest subjects!) Sophia Loren once said that a lady must sit and stand gracefully without lurching or making pain noises. FWIW.
Regarding the hanging mamilaries, I think you can take that to the off-topic conversation pit. Unless you can make it fit today's quote.
Kathy, I understand. I might risk some extra carbs if the occasion arises, but I forget that I'm also diabetic and they'll make me sleepy. What's the matter with my brain! :suspicious:
Great sticker photo, Hawk! Anybody else still using them? Karole must be.
Happy mowing, Becca. Hope your asthma doesn't kick in.
Amy, I'm so glad you found some relief! Doctors around here don't let you call in. You need to make an appointment and be seen. You got a good one.
Lisa peeked in! Hi, Lisa!
My old eye needs the glasses. My new eye can't see a thing with the glasses. I can't pop the lens out of this style, so I'm going to find someone to make me a clear glass lens. The new eye is farsighted right now, but it will settle down in a couple of weeks, I understand. DH finally consented to let me dry dishes. I've been amazed at how easily I nod off today. I did spend an hour in the sun with big black sunglasses and a baseball cap. There will be no picture of THAT! ;)

I'm gonna' post NOW, before I get distracted again - or knocked off 'puter.
Have had a couple of so-so days. Can't remember which is which.
Today, didn't walk, but ate well. Got in some exercise - abs, and stairs and house cleaning.
Walked yesterday, ate pretty well, but not exactly right.
Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday...DH went out, wait, I think I did okay:slywink:
Have NOT been getting good sleep. Work dreams, again. Waking every couple of hours. Can't get up in the am, so no 'puter time. No time in the evenings.
NOW, I'm done posting, so I can go back and read ALL the posts I've missed:D

Stormy , you described me to a tee-- I will go along just fine for a while and then as you say I do something outrageous like pick up a kleenix off the floor and bingo --back spasm. And , strangely enough, I have often wondered if there is something about my hip that is causing me problems. It was so weird to have you mention it.
Yes for today altho I can't give you the totals as I am having trouble getting on fitday tonight. Lucky enough I put in every thing before I even ate my dinner so I know I was okay with protein and carbs both. Had 25 carbs but can't remember the protein exactly.

Today was a yes for me. That's pretty good considering I have two presentations to present tomorrow and usually the night before I am stressed to the max. I am pretty calm tonight as I think a quick run through will be all I need to touch them up.

Evening all. No asthma flair ups (yet) but lots of sneezing. Will take a Benadryl before bed as extra protection. However I ACHE all over... at first it was just arms, legs and upper back... now lower back and I think practically every muscle in my body! ;) Definitely my exercise for today!
Yeah I was majorly frustrated about my visit to the store. Not like me to vent so vehemently though. :o Maybe I'll try again on Sunday. I'm just confused as to why they would have the info on their site if they don't offer the class. DD2 was interested in taking it too.
Nearly bedtime for me and I'm so exhausted I'm sure I'll go right to sleep.
Final numbers for the day:
Protein: 140 grams - squeaked in a full yes
Eccs: 26 grams - yes
Water: 116 ounces - yes
Supplements: AMP + almonds - yes
Exercise: mowed the lawn approx 30 minutes - yes
Hoping to have an early morning tomorrow and do my DWTS stretching segments. I'm sure I'll need it! See you later!

Missy, you're hopeless! How can I keep order here with you stirring up the pot! :suspicious:  ;) I don't even want to think about the pasties! I understand about having so much fun that you forgot to eat, but can you plan for tomorrow?
Claudette, good luck tomorrow with your presentations!
Becca, I missed you the first time through. You sound like a candidate for a hot bath! :) Maybe you can give the store another chance another day...
Ok..so I took mine off.:D  :D
I had a blast swimming with the grandkids today. It was a perfect day. I have them tomorrow too. I took chicken in the cooler for me and they ate turkey sandwiches. I also took a huge container of strawberries and water and convinced them that strawberries were the best thing in the world...better than cookies and twinkies!!
I was on plan all day too!! YOu are what you eat and I refuse to BE a twinkie.:suspicious:

Becca...from what I "gather" the national headquarters of Michaels and One Stroke always have "featured" monthly and quarterly projects..and they print the ad for ALL the stores...regardless if they have a painting teacher or not! (I know, stupid, but)...so in my stores case...the register employee's would direct any customer inquiries about that particular project to the other store (in town) that had a teacher.
Part of my understood "requirements" as the one stroke instructor is to make SURE I teach that monthly project, plus the quarterly one ONCE a month, plus I must teach a 'basic' class at the very least once a month. But, I plan on offering the monthly/quarterly project twice a month each, and Basic's classes (how to paint a rose, or sunflower, or wildflower) twice a week. Plus intermediate classes in the afternoons for those who wish to move beyond 'one stroke'.
Clear as MUD, eh?!
.....and, may I add, ALL while doing this 'on plan' ;) :D
Becca...if you do go back, find the classroom and see if they even have a one stroke teacher on their 'wall' of display. Doesn't sound like they do.
Carol...lol YEP, I'm determined not to do that to myself again...so I made preparations this evening!

That's good, Missy. Gosh, you sound so organized! That might actually help you stay on plan in the long run!
Hawk, you're a good gramma. My grandson came over today just before lunch with a big blue donut. His daddy was muttering under his breath and we found him some protein for lunch. If he's going to get good food habits, it won't be from his mama! I'm on a mission!
I had a very disorganized and high-carb food plan today. I can't even call it a plan. At first I thought it might be because they gave me a glucose drip at the clinic, but I don't think it was glucose. I think it was just my nerves overcoming my common sense. I had several snacks instead of good meals and each one would have been unremarkable by itself, but they added up. :(
Tomorrow will be better! I'll start with a shake. Have a good night, all.

Actually... I might be TOO organized! If there is such a thing? AND another fear I have is that I might be doing 'too hard' of projects too soon. :o I'm not yet experienced with the unexperienced painter....and...well, I have the belief that EVERYONE CAN PAINT! :D
Oh...we shall see. :D :o :paranoid:

You know Carol...well, in those hospital situations it's EASY to go over and lose all control....even for unremarkable food choices....something to due with nerves...and being the 'patient' aka 'victim' ;) :D for the day/event...so, don't worry about it. It happens to the best of us! Shurbert anyone?! :D

Thanks, Stormwolf. I think (though every book you read seems to have some pet theory on back pain) that my problem is ligament based, so you're right that strong muscles won't fix it, though I think they can help a little bit. I can't usually associate my back problems with any particular movement or activity. The only common feature seems to be that they almost always happen in the last week of my menstrual cycle. I've seen research that found that women who have that pattern of low back/ rear pelvic pain have higher than average levels of relaxin. So it's not exactly a ligament/tendon injury, more that they get over-stretchy sometimes.
Thank you for the prolotherapy link. I had come across it in my reading. For now, I don't think the problem's bad enough for me to go looking for another treatment, but I'll bookmark it in case I do reach that point in the future.

Report for yesterday:
Protein: 198!!!
Carbs: 20
Research: Re-reading "Freakonomics" It's not metabolism, but in B-school, I would have been voted person most likely to connect A with B with 9 and Splorch, and then apply towards life, so it's good to read stuff not on diet. It might come back to be a break through.
Journal: Not here, but over at Men's Health Transform.
Exercise: Yes, Intervals.
I slept terribly. I think I'm distressed about a work deadline and the trip to Minneapolis. I miss not dreaming. It was the one real upside of depression... no nightmares.

Missy, you'll be able to "read" your students and you may find you'll have some that need very basic projects and others that give you a run for your money, all in the same class! If you have more material than you think you'll need plus a couple of baby easy strokes, you'll be ready. ;)
Max, you may want to work on acceptance for your Minneapolis trip. Is there anything in it for you at all? Maybe a side trip that you would enjoy?
