Hi -

I'm just starting this food regimen and am wondering if there might be an effect on my hair. Over the past few years I've gone from a really full head of hair to actually showing bald spots. Also for those past few years I've been existing on carbs. (I think my poor body went into shock when it saw protein coming down the pike! <G>).

Anyone have any experience with or know of any studies about this?

Keeping my fingers crossed.

I've experienced just the opposite. I was noticably losing hair...and it's more then likely a thyroid problem. Since being on PP I've noticed alot of regrowth along my scalp and arm hair that had been missing and/or getting thinner.

That however is due to the fact that my Dr' added T3 medication (armour)...to the T4 (synthroid) medication I was taking only. But I think the diet with a lot of protein and limited carbs has improved that. I was a sever carb junkie in the old days.

I was undiagnosed for YEARS for hypothyroid. And hair loss is a big BIG clue to thyroid problems. You may want to have your Dr to the thyroid panel.

Missy-

That was my name all during my formative years. I miss it (no pun intended.) As you'll see in the next thread I have no thyroid; but my thyroid levels are above normal according to all the tests. My endocrinologist wants them even higher though.

Hi Marjorie! Rising UP through the ashes!!! :D  GOOD FOR YOU!....just know, you have landed in a most terrific place finding this board and this program!!! Sorry to hear your dr's aren't more informed, and willing to learn.

What do you mean "above" normal??? and he wants them to go higher??? you don't sound hyper with your conditions (in the other thread?) Do you have your TSH numbers, and if you'd like to share. "Normal" to most Dr's is far to wide a range, but we tend to just take their word for it. I've learned differently.

My doctor likes me as near to the top end of the scale (0.11)....but not so far as to go hyper. I had a former Dr who wouldn't 'listen' to me....and refused to hear me out...so, I fired her! :D

Missy -

Thanks for the reassurance!

As to my thyroid level, the "normal" range for TSH is 0.8-1.8mg/dl. Mine checks out at 1.9 so I'm not far above normal. She wants it higher. That may have something to do with the cancer factor.

She wants it pushed to the .8? if so...that's more in line to mine currently. (.11)

They say that the closer you are to getting it to the line the better for symptom improvement. So, don't be affraid to push it higher..and keep track of your body's signs.

I'll go check your other thread. :D

Oh! I KNOW...since this thread was/is about hair growth....I NOTICED when I switched Dr's..and got additional medicine (armour as my T3)...and still taking the synthroid that THAT is when I noticed the improvement of my regrowth of hair at my scalp and my forarms. NOTICABLE difference to me..and all along it was the lack of t3 converstion. I'm on both synthriod and armour! :D

I'd say my hairline is now more like it 'used' to be! Although, I still notice new sprouts! Which amuses me. :o :D

I'll suggest the armour as a supplement to the synthroid and see what she says. I'd love to at least try it. If she has some creditable reason why that is not a good idea I'll pass it on to you if you'd like so you can check it out. My doctor is thought to be one of the best. In that I'm lucky. The fact that she's only there 2 days a week and the next appointment I can get with her is in September makes it a little less ideal.

Oh yeah, that does make it difficult doesn't it! I have a terrific Dr that had thyroid cancer himself...so he's REALLY on top of it all... which is why I like him so well. I'm lucky for the fact that I can, and am encouraged to, email my Dr. should 'anything' come up that I have a question on...and I tell you THAT is worth it's weight in gold to me. It's not that he gives me advise in lew of coming into see him...but if I have a question he'll give me his opinion. It's fantastic.

I'd be interested in what her response is Phoenix. Some Dr's poo poo the "armour"...so just be forwarned. My former Dr refused to consider it, and that's one of the reasons why she became a "former" :D

Just keep plugging along Phoenix!
