Hello.
My name is Barb and I am looking for some advice. I have done Atkins in the past, lost 55 pounds and then went on the "Anti-Atkins diet" and have gained some of that weight back and felt craptacular in the process. I am now once again eating the low carb way and think a different perspective of the WOE might be a good idea. I have read the South Beach Diet book, but something about his approach didn't impress me. If I were to buy a PP book which one is recommended? Should I buy ALL of them? I do have the Comfort Foods Cookbook.

Thanks for your help.

Barb

I will post more about me and my past experiences with Atkins/low carb in the near future.

IMO: PPLP > PP > 30-day
If you can, get them all - try one of the used sites for best prices. If you're going to have just one, PPLP has more science and more recent science & more recent recommendations than the others.

Welcome, Barb :).

PP and PPLP both explain lots about how to do PP, and why. PP, being the first book, covers the basic stuff about carbs, protein and insulin. PPLP updates where necessary and covers things like leaky gut, iron, magnesium as well. And it's a bit easier to read.

The 30-Day book is basically a how-to-do-it book, with just the minimum of explanation about why - but paring it down to the minimum works well and gives a simple, clear run through the basics, so I like that book too.

As you're already familiar with low carb approaches and looking for more info, I'd start with PP or PPLP - both if you can.

As a slight contrarian opinion here:
PP has the better protein level chart
and
PPLP has a bunch of stuff that is life improving but not necessarily diet related (e.g. new learning) or practical (e.g. the sunshine chapter recommendations as written are for stay at home moms and entrepreneurs. It simply cannot work as written for someone with an office job).

That said, PPLP has the most up-to-date version of the program, and the protein calculations are usually not very far off the old book.

Welcome Barb!

I began with the Protein Power book and really enjoyed it. Lots of descriptions about your body and what food does to it. If I remember correctly, it has recipes as well.

I recently acquired a copy of Protein Power LifePlan and found it very interesting. I think it would have been too much information initially if I had begun with that first.

I guess in a nutshell, PP covers the basics & Why, and PPLP covers just about everything else to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

I haven't seen the 30-day book yet, so no opinion there. But the Eades are very readable, and I will probably get a copy in the near future for myself.

Getting used copies should allow you to purchase them all at reasonable prices (buying a lot of books at one time can be pricy!) and allow you to start with whichever of the books tickles your fancy.

beating a dead horse here as you've already recieved plenty of good opinions,( and I own ALL the books!) but one of the chapters I really enjoyed in PP was the chapter about the diet of the egyptians. Very enlightening and convincing! PPLP is little more up to date on fats and sweeteners.

Thanks all for the advice. I will look for both the PP and PPLP books today. Maybe later will pick up the 30 day one.

Have a great weekend all!
