View Full Version : Higher Blood Sugar...a side effect?

I've got a weird issue...maybe someone can weigh in with their opinion?

My Dr thinks that I may have PCOS...I recently was diagnosed with Diabetes--have been keeping my fasting blood sugar between 84 and 89 since beginning LC in January--and have not had a period for about a year and a half.

Since going back to LC my hormones are finally back in balance (finally got a period) but my fasting blood glucose for this last week has been 94 - 98. Is this typical? I have not changed the way I have been eating but even after a whole day of exhausting, heavy yard work my blood glucose was 96.

Am I broken, or maybe it's my glucose meter? ;)

You know, Lena, you might have a point about a broken meter! I thought my sugars were in the acceptable range, but my doc called and LEFT A FIT on my machine! I took my meter in, and at the same time, we tested samples... MINE was WRONG!!!

Now, I have one that's up-to-date, and is just great...

AND, I've only seen my numbers go DOWN...

Keep an eye on it, and give your doc a call if you're worried... However, just know there are some (me!), who'd LOVE to have numbers in the 90's! I'm close, but still not quite. :)

I'd be thrilled to have BS that low....consistantly...Mine run between 100 and 130, lately. I haven't seen the below 100's for a month or so. Glucometers have a tendency to run higher anyway over a routine blood test...don't know why exactly but they do. I wouldn't worry about your blood sugars....I'd be thrilled personally. As long as I can stay off insulin I'm happy. Also, change your battery fairly often, every 3 months or so, sometimes that has an effect too. I usually put fresh ones in and use the "old" ones in something else....like the remote.

Thanks for the reassurance Michelle and Sherry...I'm so strict right now with what I'm eating--partly to lose weight and partly so that I can prove I don't need meds--I was so surprised to see the numbers jump so much higher without a food-related reason.

I like the idea of testing compared to the Dr's or my next lab

I'll just keep on Keepin' on then...

Lena, I agree with Michelle. I'm happy to be 100 in the morning. Don't forget stress will send your numbers up and so will an infection or inflammation. Food is the easy part to control.

It's possible the stress of an exhausting day of work, or a long bike ride, will put the numbers up a bit and then they'll drop sharply in an hour or so. Unexplained rise in numbers prompts me to do a body check to see if everything's all right.

I like to test just before I got to the lab, too. Just to see how close I am to the A1c.

Hmmm...stress has been around for the last couple of weeks at work as well. I wouldn't have been too worried about a high level here and there; it's just that the numbers have been high(er) than usual for about nine days straight.

Thanks for the kind words, Carol! They will help keep my stress level from increasing unnecessarily!

Other than the muscle aches in my legs from working in the yard on Sunday I seem to be feeling peachy...

But DH and I are heading out for a well-deserved long weekend in a couple of days so that may help quite a bit!

As an anecdote, I got a new boss a couple of years ago who changed my job completely and is a micro-manager to boot. My blood sugar went up and stayed up to the point where I went back on a low dose of the medicine I had stopped taking with PP. There is absolutely no other reason it should have gone up. I'm still working on getting it back down.

Yes, a little time away could be just what you need! ;)

Carol is absolutely correct in that stress, infection, TOM will elevate blood sugars. For the first time in longer than I can remember my A1C was below 7 (last month), it's been over 11 before . The better I eat, the better my blood sugars are and I don't have to worry about taking insulin anymore unless I go crazy, but even if I overindulge, my body is pretty good now about bringing blood sugar within range, all on it's own without the supplemental insulin, that is way cool.

Keep us posted, I'm always interested in people who can give up the drugs.

Well, I guess that's got to be it then...I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens (and try to leave work stuff at work).

Congrats on the A1C level, Michelle...getting it that low is quite an accomplishment!

Starting to count my blessings instead of just worrying will do me good. I guess I'll start counting as we're driving to the beach this morning! Who can worry on a beautiful day like today?

One thing I thought of, is rebound hyperglycemia. It is common in the middle of the night - your blood sugar will drop, but then the body will compensate for the sugar going to low and release glucose that is stored. This will cause your BG levels to go higher.

I only mention this because you had been working in the yard a lot, and maybe (unintentionally) not snacking like you should. This would also cause the "rebound" effect.

Never hurts to check it out.
