Hi all,
I'm new here. This board has a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. I'm low-carbing because of GERD and find the diet very helpful. Has other benefits, too. Here's my question: Somebody recommended potato juice as a cure for heartburn, I guess because it's alkaline. I know potatoes are too high for me right now. Would, say, half a cup of juice have more or fewer carbs than a half-cup of potato? I can't find any carb count for potato juice anywhere. I suppose nobody can imagine people actually drinking the stuff.

holy Smolies! I haven't heard of that, maybe others have! You are right I can't imagine. When I even think of the potato in cold water and the starch that comes out of it, I would think that would exasperate the condition rather than cure it. Interesting though there was a response in other health conditions section on GERD and I am betting you might want to respond there and see what the good Dr. Norm has to say!
Welcome though, we are a friendly bunch and hopefully supportive of your efforts!

never heard of potato juice for reflux - I have heard of cabbage juice for healing reflux. I've also heard that too little acid might be the actual culprit and to drink vinegar in water or lemon in water before meals. But Billie's right - we do have Dr. Norm's thread - you might try there.

HA! Now, how's THAT for making my day!?!?!? LOL... Thank you, Seagal! (Do you KNOW how hard it is to NOT write SeaGULL!?!?!?! :p )
I don't know about the potato juice... I do know that this way of eating will drastically cut the GERD. I have had THREE surgeries on my throat due due to acid reflux, and WHEN I eat as I should, I have "nary a challenge" with it...
Stick around, and I'm sure you'll get some help... again, welcome!

i dont know anything about potato juice.....
however, i've been told by many people, that apple cider vinegar is the absolute best cure they've found for GERD/acid reflux. they've also said to use organic ACV, because is much gentler, than non-organic. pickle juice is said to have a similar effect, for those who cannot stand the taste of ACV.
to use, mix 1 tablespoon in 8oz. glass of warm water and drink. be sure to rinse your mouth afterwards, because the acid is bad for your teeth! :)

Thanks, all, for your warm welcome and advice. I have heard of the AVC and cabbage juice remedies. Not sure how to juice a cabbage, as I don't have a juicer, but the juice would fit the low-carb diet. I guess I'll forget about the potato juice. I'd be afraid to even say the word "potato" to Norm.

I have found that just eating lc since the end of Jan has eliminated my heartburn - could be weight loss, could be lc - but I never had it bad enough to call it GERD

I, like Sherry, have had sugeries on my throat due to chronic GERD. Potatoes in any way, shape, form or fashion ALWAYS make the condition worse, so I can't believe for a minute that the juice of a potato would be any help at all!
