Do any of you have good recipes for mainly broth type soups. I would really like one for something like Chinese Hot & Sour soup and the soup that Japanese restaurants serve with hibachi (I don't know the name of this one). They are both so delicious. Something I think would be fairly low carb and help with my hunger spells when I don't need to eat much else. Besides the fact that I really love these two soups.

Thanks.

Omelette, I think what you're looking for besides the Hot and Sour soup is maybe miso soup. Both of these are easily on plan. I'll try to look up some basic recipes and post them. Much as I love them, since they don't hold well for eating over a couple of days, I usually rely on takeout for my fixes. ;)

H&S soup is a favorite of mine (it uses Tree Ears - the only mushroom I like :) ). I think the only ingredient in H&S soup that couldn't be made on plan would be the cornstarch - you need some thickener to make it have the right body. Everything else could be adjusted in quantity for PP.

I just don't know if xanthan or guar gum would make that same texture / mouthfeel for the soup - I haven't played with them.

I cook with Xanthan gum. But I am still in the learning process. Just a little goes a long way so be careful! I read it thickens both hot and cold things but I have noticed the texture is a little different. Sorta like, slimy. But at least I'm beating the system! I have used it in cheese sauce, salad dressings, gravies and whatever else I would normally use corn starch for. It takes alittle more time to see the thickening results too, so don't be in too much a hurry to add more until you give it a little time. I also would love to have a Low carb hot and sour soup recipe. I know I have a regular one somewhere. Cheers, Carri

Okay...here's a link to an easy Hot and Sour Soup that is only 6g ECC. It's at Recipezaar; scroll down and look to the right to see the nutrient info.

In Thailand, they make Tom Ka, which is a variation on hot and sour soup that uses no cornstarch at all and usually uses seafood as the protein. That would be even lower carb. I'll have to edit in the link to miso soup later. ;)

Thanks everyone. I found a recipe for the miso soup, but I think the one that I am really looking for is an onion soup.

I'm having my tonsils out this coming Wed, so I am going to be on a liquid diet for a while. Hoping I can get by with broths/added protein and smoothies.

Omlette, when I need a quick onion soup fix, I saute 1/3 cup thinly sliced onions in butter until they're brown and carmelized. Then I pour in a cup of my own vegetable stock or a cup of low salt veggie or beef or chicken broth, and simmer about 15 minutes until the broth is infused with the onion flavor. Then, especially if what I really want is broth with no chewable things, I puree the onions with my handy-dandy stick (immersion) blender. It's not a slow cooked onion soup by any means, but it's wonderful during a cold or with a sore throat.
