Hi, and thank you for your time and expertise...

In searching lists on the interent for low-carb veggies, i've seen peas and carrots on both the starchy/high-carb list AND the low-carb list...

Is there a correct answer to this dilemma?

Carrots are a good go-to for me when i need an emergency snack... the texture and the "crunch" seem to help, when i am in a detoxing mode, phasing out bad carbs.

Thanks!

Happy New Year!!

You probably saw snow peas, rather than the podded sweet peas, which are considerably lower carb than the sweet variety.

As for carrots, someone else can have a go at that.

Hi, Deke.
I eat both raw and cooked carrots, and regular peas, split peas and snow peas...in moderation.

The 'correct answer' is really the portion size and the carbs/fiber per portion. If you like those veggies, then you should know that there are absolutely portion sizes that fit on plan, and in any case they're better than eating an equivalent portion of a processed carb--for instance, M&Ms or doughnuts. ;)

According to www.fitday.com (ECC = grams of carbs minus grams of fiber):

1/2 cup green peas, raw = 4g protein, 6g ECC (10g carbs - 4g fiber)
1/2 cup green peas, cooked (boiled, with salt) = 4g protein, 9g ECC (13-4g fiber)
1 cup snowpeas, raw chopped = 3g protein, 4g ECC (7-3g fiber)
1/4 cup (after cooking) dry split peas = 11g protein, 17g ECC (28-11g fiber)
1 baby carrot, raw (large) = 1g carb...
3 oz. raw baby carrots (one of those to-go packs) = about 5g ECC (7.5g -2g fiber)
1/2 cup sliced carrots, cooked = 1g protein, and 5g ECC (8 - 3g fiber)

So are carrots and peas high carb or low carb?
It doesn't really matter on PP--you can eat anything you choose, in moderation. Raw or cooked carrots, peas, snow peas and even cooked split peas all qualify and fit on plan in the appropriate portion sizes.

Hope this helps.

Gaelan... awesome thanks so much. Makes perfect sense. i'm such a total newbie... there's more thinkin' involved than i thought there would be.

Love the raw veggies most... cooked too... and fruit as well. All, makes for great digestion, clearer skin, etc.... also (imho) makes my workouts better... so i'm trying to balance my whole PP Plan out.

i am guessing it's a lot of trial and error, 'till your PP correct

i'll be checkin' in with you guys a lot if that's ok... i'm in the process of finding some good food lists (protein, veggie, fruit).

cmcole ~ Thank you as well, for your time and expertise.

Happy New Year all!! Peace in the New Year!

Deke, in the Getting Started | Important Links and Resources forum, there's a thread Mitra put up called Carb Bargains (http://www.proteinpower.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62). It's a list condensed from the original PP book, and it may be just what you're looking for.
