“People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.”

Zig Ziglar

As I look at the window and see about 3 inches of new snow and swirls more coming down, I tried to think about what to think about today! :D Certainly isn't spring here in central Illinois, (well actually it is last week tornadoes, this week snow storm is pretty typical weather). And I thought how we motivate ourselves, everyday to do things. Most of us don't like certain chores around the house, but we do them. Most of us have something at work that absolutely makes are day miserable. Most of us don't like to shop when the stores are packed. But somethings we have to do, we just have to do certain things.

Is that where we started going wrong with taking care of our bodies? Is it because we for example, HAD TO EAT OUR VEGGIES, or we HAD to clean our plate? Did that cause our motivation to faulter? I mean we are reasonable people (well there are some here...Sherry, Lita, Janet :D ) why is it that we have to continually motivate ourselves to take good care of ourselves, gosh that should be an automatic one, yet it is not.

I guess the quotation above is true,, motivation needs to be done everyday for us, in some way. Some of the great threads that we lost when we were hacked, there was one on motivation and what motivates people. No crying over spilled milk, it's gone, but we are not and we can build a new thread about what motivates people, a keeper thread so that we can turn to it when we need a dose of energy to stay on the program.

So motivation what is it that does it for you:
Do fears motivate you?
Does happiness motivate you?
Do your children or husband or wife motivate you?
New Clothes, does that do?
Going to the doctor for blood work, does that do?

Sure they can all motivate us, but what keeps up motivated? There are no quick answers here but lets build something we can use and put away in our resource library on tips for motivation.

One thing that motivates me, is everybody here!

Have a great day!

Uh... does that mean we ARE reasonable... or not!??!!? (It COULD read either way, LOL!)

You know, Billie? All those motivate me... but, I find that not ONE thing does it. I have to CONTINUALLY be motivated, just like Zig says!

My doctors weekly questioning me about what my blood pressure is. That helps. Numbers don't lie. The scale. The tape measure. The fear of losing my right leg and knowing daily excersize will keep the blood flowing. Realizing that the carbs I eat need to be nutritious and not wishing to waste them on junky carbs.
Another motivator. Even tho they do not agree with lo carb, the personal trainers and directors at the Y know what I am doing and why. When they walk through the room and I am working out, they embarrass me so bad by yelling.. Way to go Lynn!! WHOOO WHOOO!! Burn BABY BURN!!!!! LOOKING GOOD!!! I want to crawl under a weight bench.
I work the front desk at the Y and now it is noticable enough that women are commenting to me about the change they see and asking what I am doing to achieve it as they walk in. That is a great motivator too. A few are beginning to lo carb. I'm not allowed to suggest a diet but I can tell them what I do.
I set a date twice a week to take my blood pressure and the treadmills at the Y show your pulse. I know that when I began ,I could get up to 150 a minute pretty easily. Now it is hard to get that high and it drops back down pretty fast. I want my resting pulse back at 60 and so I am working at being steady with my cardio so that will happen again.

Health is my biggest motivator. Whenever I feel tempted to stray, I just think of the improvements I've already seen, and that helps me stay motivated.
annual cholesterol panels normal/excellent
eliminating several prescription medications
better sleep
fewer allergy symptoms
more energyIn addition, being able to pick up a cute outfit in a store and know that it will fit and look good! Of course, I've had to work at not becoming an obsessive shopper because of this! :D For a while I was shopping every weekend, and for the sake of the family finances, I had to tell myself rather firmly that I had enough clothes and did not need to buy any more!

I even got motivated a few times when I saw guys do the classic double takes when I walked by. On one occasion I got whistles from a passing car - that had me smiling for a while! I know some ladies are embarrassed when they get this kind of attention, and don't want it, especially if they're married, but for me, it was a wonderful affirmation that I've made it into the "hot stuff" category. :D And my husband actually gets this kind of proud look on his face when he notices it <chuckle>.

Oddly enough, when friends compliment me, it just doesn't have the same ego boost. I think I subconsciously discount those kinds of compliments because I know they're my friends and they've liked me regardless of my weight/health.

Let's see, what else motivates me... with exercise, it's feeling stronger and more able to do things. Being able to pick up boxes without needing to ask for help, being able to carry multiple bags of groceries in from the car without feeling strained, etc.

Oh, and there's always the incredible motivation of being able to sink my teeth into something that other people consider decadent, like a really rich sugar-free cheesecake, a beautifully marbled prime rib, etc. Knowing that I'm eating something that is good for me even as my taste buds explode with flavor. Mmmmmmmmm!
