View Full Version : Carbs gone = hypoglycemia gone

I had terrible hypoglycemic symptoms up until a couple of months ago. So bad that I couldn't even drink coffee or have a bite of an apple without getting foggy headed and needing a 3 hour nap to recover. It got to the stage where even an omelette with a little tomato cooked into it would set me off. My body simply couldn't tolerate any carbs at all. How did it get this way? I don't know, but having been sensitive to high-carb/high-glycemic foods for a year or two, I did for a while go raw vegan and thus consumed massive amounts of fruit. After 2 weeks of this (and 2 weeks inside a hypoglycemic fog) I quit and went back to my old Paleo way of eating. But the hypoglycemia stuck and even the low-carb berries and veggies I'd enjoyed previously could no longer be tolerated.

So a couple of months ago, out of necessity as much as intrigue, I started eating zero-carb - just basically meat, fish and eggs and green tea or water to drink (as I said, coffee elevated my blood sugar too much).

Anyway, 2 months on and I am now able to drink coffee again and am able to tolerate WHITE RICE without any hypo symptoms! I generally still stick to an ultra low carb and 100% grain free diet, but last week I had a piece of sushi (containing the white rice) and nothing happened!! A few weeks ago that would have put me in a stupor.

I hasten to add that my skin has never looked this good either, and I weigh 118lbs (at 5' 4"). I feel like I should vary my diet a little and am adding back the odd apple, a few nuts, etc. but to be honest, I feel so good as a carnivore that I don't really miss that stuff. It's just sometimes not that convenient to take meat with you everywhere you go. :)

Anyway, your mileage as they say may vary, but to me it's more proof that a Paleo-type diet can pretty much fix anything.

I remember those posts, Paleogirl. I'm glad to see you found what works. I guess it takes time to rebuild our insulin sensitivity. That seems to have been true in my case and I have type 2. I ate a small sweet potato and was glad to see my blood sugar didn't go up very much. But I just have to enjoy a little of the veggies and fruits in season.

Just be careful of carb creep!

Sounds like someone needs a food dehydrator and a jerky gun. ;)

Actually Dan, I do - and I used to make the most delicious jerky in it... but these days dehydrated food makes my stomach bloat out like crazy! I have Celiac and a bunch of other food allergies so when I get a weird reaction to something I learn to listen to it. :(

In theory though yes - jerky is the perfect portable Paleo snack. :)
