Oops! Sorry, I meant Saturday, 3-18-06!

Today, I spent an hour on the elliptical, did weight machines, did lunges & squats and then did some push up with weights while on one of those big balancing balls. (Help me, Shadow, what do you call that ball? Because I sure don't know...all I know is the personal trainer had me do those activities on that thing.) The cool thing about today is that since we're checking out this new gym, is that my husband worked out for the first time in years. He did the elliptical for about 30 minutes (which was 10 minutes longer than what I could do when I first started on it). However, when he told me what heart rate he was doing this at, I just about died! He told me he kept it at about 190 BPM for that entire time. I tried explaining the whole 220-age multiplied by a percentage. (Shadow, can you help me again? What percentages are a good range 70-85%?) Well, anyway, he was at over 100%! I suggested that he should really talk to a personal trainer once we become members of this gym to find out what his target heart rate should be.

After this, we played with the kids in the pool for an 1.5 hours. I don't count this as exercise, though, just good ol' plain fun.

Who else has been moving & shaking today?

Hey, Lizi! :)

I just got in from rock climbing... 2 hours of upper body work, belaying all the guys(!), and a brisk 1/2 mile walk... whew! There was a STORM coming over Pike's Peak near the end, and it got COLD and BLUSTERY!!!

Liz - There are several names and different purposes for what is essentially the same big ball :). The most common name is simply exercise ball but I first knew them as the Swiss ball. Of course, different manufacturers have all coined their own names these days and they have been renamed according to their primary function - weights, cardio, balance, etc.

Oh that's awesome, Liz! Yeah for DH!!

Liz - The formulas for MHR are the same as any other formula. In other words, they give good ballpark figures but to more accurately gauge his MHR, he could do a MAF test or even a more intense, monitored test with a health professional. The formulas fail to take into account current fitness levels among other factors. But most of us aren't willing to go through the strenuous testing which is where the formula comes in ;). I know in my case, the formula gives me no where near what my actual MHR is. Anyway, take it as a good sign that he was (in theory) working at over 100% of his MHR and survived. Anyway, regarding the %, it sort of depends on what your goal is. There are 5 different "training" zones and they are all supposed to give you results in different areas. There - is that info overload :p? Rather than make your eyes roll back in your head, though, I'll quit now :D!

Ah - but being physically active outside of exercise is good for us too. Consider it the low carb icing on the low carb cake ;).

I'm short on time here today (which at least helped shorten my response, lol) but hopefully I haven't left too much out or put too much in to just totally boggle your mind. If I'm not making sense just let me know and when I have a moment I'll try to clarify where I might have confused you.

(((Shadow)))Thank you! I knew you'd come through for me! :) What's a MAF test? (How is that tested? On the treadmill?)

5 different training zones? I had only heard of 2....fat burning & cardio. See one of the reasons why I missed you so much? You're so knowledgeable!

Liz - So glad I could help :D! Here is some information on the MAF test (http://www.rrca.org/publicat/slowdown.html). I don't run (as I'm sure you know :p ) so I did mine using a HRM and a step box. BTW - you might enjoy the formula there for MHR too. I knew there was one more accurate than the Karvonen formula but couldn't think of it yesterday . And here (http://heartzones.com/_pdf/HZ_zones.pdf) is a pdf file on the 5 zones.

It has been so refreshing to have you back! I hate to admit the mental challenge you've given these old brain cells trying to recall all this info - but it's felt so good :D! Thank you - for your enthusiasm and your questions!

Shadow, thank you. I'm glad to be back, too! I'm just whipping my body back into shape and getting my food intake back under control.

Thank you for all of the good info! I knew you'd help me get my questions answered! :D

Liz - You are gonna get to where you need to be in no time! It takes diligence and hard work - but I know you can, and are, doing it :D!

Now, speaking of info - I am such a blonde sometimes . The most common name for the ball you asked about is "stability ball." Duh - that's what I call it all the time yet somehow that one escaped me in my response :p....
