:tear: Hello, I am a new member. I am starting the eating plan today, I had 1 egg 1 egg white a slice canadian bacon and a little cheese. I am wondering what the differance between Protien Power and South Beach diet? I did the Protien Power diet 6 years ago and got down from 144lbs to 119lbs I am 5ft 3in, I now weigh 152 and I am just miserable. Lynne

Hello Lynne, welcome :). I think Gabriel answered your South Beach question in one of the other places you asked it.

Hey Lynne, welcome back! The folks are fine and so is the support, thanks for wandering back to us and remembering the PP is a great healthy program!

Welcome, Lynne :). Congratulations on getting back into Protein Power! As for the beginning meal, you're looking good but you will want to make sure you're getting in your minimum protein requirement ;).

Welcome. There's several differences between PP and South Beach. For one, SB is only low carb for the first two weeks, then it adds back a lot of carbs really fast. "Low glycemic" and "low carb" are not the same. Also, SB still buys into the low fat mantra and teaches that saturated fats are bad, whereas "healthy fats" on PP are saturated and monounsaturated -- polyunsaturated and transfats are to be avoided. Then there's the issue of protein -- PP highlights the need for adequate protein, whereas in SB, it's hit and miss. And there's more, but that's a start.

Not to try and influence you at all ;) , but I really believe PP has SB beat. I've been on both, and PP has helped me reduce weight, lower chlosterol and blood sugars. With SB, although I lost a bit of weight in the beginning, when I moved to stage 2, I started to gain again. And health markers stayed the same. On PP everything has moved in the right direction. AND you don't have to pay to be on this forum and get all kinds of help, whereas SB charges for their support program (or at least used to).

Yes Belfrybat, Thank you for answering my post. I did use PP 6 years ago and I did loose alot of weight, its just that I had been hearing alot about South Beach diet. It is my first day back on PP, and you are right South beach does charge to be on their web site. I did get the impression that carbs were added back in, with South beach. My problem is just that I go for about 2 or 3 days and then I totally crave carbs eating around 2000 cals in an hour and then it is all down hill from there. I get the feeling that I have to completely stay away from the sugars and carbs, deffinately its like an addiction. I also love going to coffee at Star Bucks, I get the pumpkin spiced lattes, I noticed that after having a pumpkin spiced latte i totally craved carbs the rest of the day.

Hey Lynne,

Welcome! I find that if I just stay true to the PP plan and limit my carbs to 10 grams or less per meal, and eat at least my protein level suggested, after about 3 or 4 days my carb urges truly start fading and I can maintain pretty easily without bingeing. You're talking to a former sugar binger here for sure. :( For me too, it works a lot better at least in the early stages to just say no to all sugar and keep carbs low.

I'm at the point now after 2 weeks that I'm not even tempted with high sugar stuff in the house for my son, something I couldn't do for a long time. Just take one day at a time and focus on doing the right thing with what you eat. We're all here for you, we know you can do it!! I really recommend taking the supplements too, and be sure you get the recommended amount of chromium picolinate, it seems to help get rid of a chronic sweet tooth, I think it does for me.

Joanne, Thank you for answering my post. This is my first day and I am OK. Although I did give into a coffee latte skim milk and sugar free vanilla. I will try the supplements, that I have not done yet. Lynne:confused:

Lynne, I know that you know that nothing changes your current life's woes to just binge to find comfort, and I've been aware of that too even when I've done it too, but if you can take comfort in the understanding here, and just take each day as your assignment to not lapse back into using sugar stuff to "feel better", I know you'll kick this just clean out of your life!

My brother recommended Protein Power to me about 4 years ago, and he said just by upping your protein, that your moods would be more upbeat and stable. I know I've found that to be true with me. I think too if you eliminate sugar and most carbs, then your sugar and insulin swings don't happen either which REALLY can affect your moods. So actually I think your world will actually look better to you too, even in the trying situations, because your nutrition is balanced.

Man, I really wanted to respond better to your posts last night and you seemed so down, but I was SO tired I knew I wouldn't put the right words together. So I'm glad you tuned in today!:)

Try to remember too, that many times when things look the worst in situations, there is a better day coming right around the corner. Especially I think with rebellious-type personalities, (myself included:lol:) they have to hit bottom or bak themselves into a corner before they will listen or actually want to go a different direction. So, take heart!

Lynn, I completely agree with Joanne in the above post. It may be difficult, but if you will ditch the latte for a week and stick 100% to PP, you'll find your cravings disappear. If you absolutely have to have a latte, get a small and ask them to make it with half and half w/ sugar free syrup instead of milk. I understand Starbucks will do that. And if you do have cravings, then eat only PP friendly foods -- even if you overdo it in the beginning. One problem folks have when starting or re-starting low carb is they try to also eat low fat. Give yourself permission to eat fat, but stick closely to 10 ECC per meal or snack for a total of 40 a day (that's the Eades newer recommendation). Ketosis will kick in and your appetite will diminish. Take this from someone who knows. Even after 1-1/2 years on this plan, I still have to be careful of not eating many carbs at one time, otherwise I'll begin to crave them. I'm within 15 lbs. of goal, so do have to also watch calories, but since you have more to lose, don't worry about calories -- just stay within the ECC guidelines.

You CAN do this! :) :) :)

Welcome Lynn! and thanks for the 'nutritional' information from starbucks CM.
Carbs do make me crave. I have to be careful to get my carbs from the low carb veggie group or MEASURE, MEASURE, MEASURE my carb portions.
PP for me has more staying power than SB, and I am very comfortable with the amount and consistency of the sciencific studies backing this WOL.

  Welcome You have come to the best forum around. You should get most of your questions answered. I think South Beach is good carbs and bad carbs, versus PP which is a reduction of total carbs so you don't get an insulin reaction. The foods you eat should be healthy, and I think the Eadses talk about not going much below 30 total carbs.

Hi, Lynne,
Welcome back, this is a great support group. Hang in there, you can do this, just get back on the PP program and the weight will come off.
