I really look forward to this whole new experience. I'm trying to get it all organized with shopping and cooking and being prepared for lunches etc.

Where did this 20 pounds come from? With this wonderful support I know I can do it! Quiet Storm:tongue:

Welcome!

I'm rather new to the support around here myself, but it's terrific!

There are a lot of knowledgeable folks around to help you out and answer any questions you may have.

And, if you want accountability and guidance - good grief, there's a challenge going on, and if you even express slight interest in it, I think someone will recruit you!! :)

QStorm, I'm only a couple of weeks in, myself, but I can already tell such a difference in my energy and mood! I lost over 50 pounds myself on the Zone in 1998, but it looks like 10 or 15 have crept back in the last two years. We can do this!

Ok Here it goes I am new here and not very computer literate, anyway I have a daughter that I worried about constantly and I went on Lexapro to help me calm down a few months ago. I was using 20mg a day but went down to 10mg do I need to be completely off of this? My docter said it was up to me, does Lexapro stop weight loss? I have noticed a 15lbs weight gain since being on Lexapro. Emotional eating is a problem with me. I am just so sad I weight 138lbs a year ago and am now 152lbs. Also what is the differance between this diet and South Beach? Any help would be appreciated. Lynne

Hi Lynne!

I'm kind of new too, But I guess just ask them anywhere, or look down the lists of threads to a topic that seems related to the questions you have. I find there are lots of great people here and I've found lots of support, we all struggle sometimes with similiar things.

Just don't be shy and jump right in, some one is sure to "talk atcha" soon, even though it might be tomorrow or so.

Welcome!!:D

Wow Lynne,

Sounds familiar, my worst habits are binge - sugar eating when I'msad, discouraged, whatever, rarely when I'm actually hungry. What is great about this way of eating is that after the first few days it is very easy for most people, it seems, to stay with it because increased protein really makes you feel full and stays with you. Also the health benefits are SO good. I think increased protein and much lower carbs have a very noticeable effect on our moods in general, because your sugar isn't constantly going up and down.

The best thing I would recommend is to find a copy of either book, Protein Power or Protein Power Lifeplan, and read it thoroughly. The plans are very much the same, PPLP has a few modifications but not a lot, from the original PP book.

I'm sorry, it's late so my brain is not going to be much help to you in explaining the differences between South Beach, and also I don't know anything about your medication. I looked at your post at a bad time!!:( Also, I know some of the members who have been around here longer would be a lot better help to you than me.

My personal view (and this is just me) is that if at ALL possible, try to cope with what life throws you, without antidepressants or that type of thing. They all pretty much have side effects, and many of them really don't help your moods anyway.

Hope you can keep checking in to the forums, just keep reading and asking and someone surely more knowledgeable than me will jump right in to help you out!:D Welcome to a great bunch of supportive people!!

Hi, Lynne...welcome. ;)
First of all, take a breath. You can ask all of your questions right here on the boards, but please give people time to respond--most of us aren't on line 24/7, so we don't see every question as soon as it's posted. And posting the same question four or five times isn't necessarily going to get the question answered any faster. ;)

Second, Protein Power is very different from the South Beach diet--Agatston doesn't recognize the benefits of healthy fats in the diet, and SB encourages maintenance-level carb intake long before most people have given their bodies time to heal. The Drs. Eades, OTOH, recognize both the benefits and the need for healthy fats consumption in our diets, and they recommend limiting ALL carb intake to less than 40g/day, and around 7-10g ECC per meal(ECC = effective carbs, or total carbs minus fiber). The Eadeses also take a whole-body, mind/body, exercise incorporated approach, which Agatston (SB) does not. That's not to say people can't be successful following the SB diet, but Protein Power is a lifestyle and permanent way of eating, not a temporary 'diet' for a quick fix.

Third, yes--anti-depressants can interfere with weight loss and/or cause weight gain. But if you've been prescribed anti-depressants, you need to consult with a medical professional who understands how they work before just stopping them. If you have issues with emotional eating and with other situations that can affect mental health like stress, chronic worrying, chronic nervousness, etc., and you're on anti-depressants, they might actually be helping you cope on some level. Many of them need to be tapered off, if you've taken them for any length of time. And whether you take them or not, the situations that trigger your emotional issues are not just going to disappear. You should also consider talking through your issues with a professional (counselor, therapist, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist.) Until you identify the things that are causing the emotional upset, whether physical or mental/emotional or some combination of the two, you'll probably have trouble functioning. Eating better will help, but some people can't get a grip on their eating until they start to get a grip on their emotions...and for some, it's the reverse. Your own mileage may vary.

Welcome in!

Lynne, I can tell you that when I began eating according to this program and saw the first few pounds drop off, I immediately felt hope, which cut the urge to binge. Also, just the fact that you're not eating lots of carbs defuses the physical cravings.

When you aren't kicking yourself for bingeing, you have more resources to handle other issues that come up. Please stick around for a while and talk to people, learn the program, and pick up some hope. We're all here for each other.
