This is a very interesting article on The Economist on “food politics” entitled “Voting with your trolley”:
Some interesting quotes:

“A mile travelled by a large truck full of groceries is not the same as a mile travelled by a sport-utility vehicle carrying a bag of salad”

“producing dairy products, lamb, apples and onions in that country [New Zealand] and shipping them to Britain used less energy overall than producing them in Britain”

“It turns out to be better for the environment to truck in tomatoes from Spain during the winter, for example, than to grow them in heated greenhouses in Britain”

Hi Mauro--

I don't know that I buy everything in the article, but it is interesting. Thanks for the link.

Cheers--

More NYT reading for you...

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/22/magazine/22sciencefraud.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

Hi Anne--

I read it. And I got a few emails on it as well as your comment.

Poehlman's out and out fraudulent efforts to support the lipid hypothesis in the face of his own data showing lack of comfirmation are only one part of the story. Almost as much damage is done by researchers who generate data showing that the lipid hypothesis isn't valid then simply elect not to publish them. Whatever the reason--fearing hostility from their peers, wanting to curry favor with the powers that be, reluctance to go against the hypothesis de jour--the results are almost the same. And the whole sleight-of-hand is pulled off with no risk of accusation of scientific fraud.

Thanks for writing.

I read The Omnivore's Dilemma last spring and it really brought home to me what I already knew. Food is easy and cheap for us in the US, but we pay a price for that. My family made the commitment to choose local and organic as much as we can. We joined a CSA, supplemented with our local farmer's market which also supplied us with chicken, pork and eggs. We are also lucky to have a local food co-op that is committed to buying locally whenever possible. We purchased a freezer to house the 1/4 beef & 1/2 pig we've ordered from local farmers. It's more time consuming and expensive, but the food is so much fresher and I we feel good about feeding it to our growing boys. I've also found that we waste much less food. When food is cheap and you can get it 24 hours a day, you just don't appreciate it the same way.

Hi Kristn--

Thanks for the great comment. I hope more and more people follow your lead.

Best--

Bravo! Now if I can only find such a place near me. I am sure there are lots of places online to find a local processor, and I am sure they are posted elsewhere in you blogs. Would anyone mind reposting? Thanks

Keep up the good work.
Dave.

PS. Love the new look!

Hi David--

You can find many, many purveyors of meat from grass-fed animals at www.eatwild.com.

Good luck.
