Dr. Mike you are spot on!

I didn't get to 473 pounds in one go. I successfully lost weight on a number of 'diet programs' that all emphasized low cal high carb.

Before I began this Low Carb lifestyle, I made a conscious decision. I was going to do this for life. If that meant losing very slowly, but keeping to low carb - then so be it.

It was a lot of hard work to change my mindset.

Now, as I deal with a lot of other fellow dieters, trying to lose weight, I notice the exact same pattern of behaviour you described.

You see people join a forum, and say they are very impatient to lose to 20 pounds. They have some sort of urgency about them. With the amount of weight I have to lose, I just roll my eyes at them.

It's the get in quick, and leave syndrome.

I had to eventually close my blog, because my philosophy of 'Maintenance is most important' just wasn't popular enough. I got too much critisism from people who want to do it, quick and fast (and eat their cake too).

Hi LC Dave--

You're right on the money. People want to lose fast, and most don't give a flip about maintenance. They figure that if they can just lose the weight (and the faster the better) it will somehow magically stay lost. That's why there are so many overweight people out there. It takes a real commitment to lost, especially if there is a lot to lose; and an even bigger commitment to keep it off.

Thanks for writing.

Good advice! I have two friends that are on Weight Watchers and it never fails that they leave the program and go back up. And they see me never have problems with my weight, maintaining single digit bodyfat, yet never bother to ask for advice. Or when they ask for advice, it isn't what they want to hear, so they go back to WW.

Hi Scott--

It's unfortunate, but a low-carb diet is not the answer a lot of people want to hear. But do they pay dearly for not listening.

Cheers--

It's not exactly accurate to say it cost $49/lb as you have to buy some kind of food anyway. $300/mo for food doesn't sound that expensive to me. Eating prepackaged food for a whole month, on the other hand, sounds just nasty.

Hi maggie--

You're right. I figured someone would catch me on that. The truth is, however, that anyone with 60 pounds to lose could easily fast for an entire month and probably be the better for it. If so, any weight lost would cost zero dollars per pound.

It's been our experience that people with 60 excess pounds lose about 3 pounds per week on a low-carb diet. One could - by shopping carefully - follow a good quality low-carb diet for $300 per month. If so, then the weight lost would cost about $25 per pound, or about half of what the folks paid to lose on NutriSystem. And the diet would be a whole lot better for them.

Cheers--

This is great advice. So what are the up and coming weight loss companies I should invest in now?

Hi imsovain--

Good to hear from you; it's been a while.

I don't know of any new start-up weight-loss centers right now, but don't worry, there will no doubt be one soon.
