Speaking from my own personal experience with aspartame, I must agree that another study or review is necessary. I used to chew gum with Nutrasweet. Ultimately, I was able to make the correlation between my agony and the gum. Or anything with Nutrasweet in it. I experience adverse affects almost immediately when I accidentally eat/drink something with it. Brutal headaches, nausea and general misery over the next few hours.

So, not only do I buy into the notion that where there's smoke there's fire, I know my body reacts adversely to aspartame and also know that I'm not alone.

I'd like to see a new study prove that aspartame is not as dangerous as some reports suggest.

Hi Semones--

Thanks for your comment. I'll keep my ear to the ground for such a study and report it.

Best--

MRE

I don't believe anyone has specifically made the claim that it's harmful (with the exception of the flawed Italian study). I'm also not convinced that just because many of the older peer reviewed studies funded by the industry showed no harmful effects, and non-funded ones showed there were, that there is some type of conspiratorial association.

As far as the anecdotal reports of negative effects, I think one has to consider the amount of aspartame ingested and the possibly that it has more to do with the activities of phenylalanine than the sweetener itself.

Remember when aspartame first hit the market? There were reports of neurological problems, all discounted as being not caused by aspartame. There were also reports of women having trouble with their menses, skipped periods, unusually heavy periods....again, all said to be coincidental.

Because of these reports I never let my kids have aspartame while they were growing up. My fear was that 25-30yrs after approval they'd discover it damaged a woman's reproductive system. (I have a son and a daughter, I kept them both from it!)

This is not the first time something has been approved, then later found out to be harmful! When is the FDA going to smarten up and test these things properly?????
