Remember the movie Forest Gump? My kids were shocked when they saw his doc talking to his mom puffing away!
Many docs also prescribed smoking as a “relaxant”!
Hi Cindy–
Times have certainly changed. My mother, who smoked throughout her pregnancy with me, told me that when she asked her doctor if she should quit while pregnant, he said: God, no, you would go crazy. Was par for the course then; would probably merit a malpractice suit now.

Holy cow, I’m too young to EVER remember seeing this before. WOW, time HAVE changed a lot, haven’t they?!
I wonder if our grandchildren and great grandchildren will have the same “shock” that I had when they see vintage commercials from our day proclaiming the health benefits of avoiding saturated fats?
With all the overwhelming breadth of scientific research that will be coming out in the next few years confirming fat consumption and low-carb living not only as healthy, but actually a far superior nutritional approach compared to low-fat diets, I have no doubt in my mind that the same kind of change societal paradigm shift is coming.
Keep on sharing your insights, Dr. Mike, and keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!

P.S. Did you see FOXNews.com on Monday named my “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” blog one of the top 10 health blogs on the Internet? Here’s a link to the story:
That was quite an honor considering my blog was the ONLY one in the list that was about low-carb and weight loss. Of course, I believe there are many other low-carb and weight loss web sites that merit more attention than mine (like YOURS, for example!), but it was nice to receive the added exposure for a pro-low-carb site for once.
Hi Jimmy–
Ah, you young people. Cigarette ads were all over the tube when I was a kid. I could sing every jingle. It’s no wonder that everyone smoked. There were even candy cigarettes that we kids could buy and pretend we were smoking until we got old enough to get the real things. Fortunately, I found the whole thing totally distasteful and have never even tried a single cigarette.
I hope we all do look back on this era of anti-fat frenzy in the same way we do these old cigarette ads: with your kind of amazement. As in, what could they have been thinking?
Congrats on the Fox mention of your blog. Keep up the good work.

This clip is awesome. Thanks for posting it.
Hi Lyndsey–
Glad you enjoyed it.

Great clip! I forwarded it off to my friends. Gee, tobacco companies would *never* target minors, would they?
Hi Dan–
Nah, tobacco companies wouldn’t target minors. What’s the point? Kids can’t buy cigarettes:)

Actually, I DO remember candy cigarettes, but I never got them just to act like I was puffing away on a smoke. I LOVED THE SUGAR! That’s why I ended up weighing over 400 pounds as an adult. If they don’t kill you with real cancer sticks, then the sugar in the fake ones will do the trick. UGH!
How true, how true.
